The Drive
From the apron the Overseas Highway runs west through Marathon and ends, as far as this trip is concerned, at Knight's Key, where the old bridge begins. It is a few minutes of road with water on both sides for most of it.

The modern bridge passes over the island without an exit, so the way on is the old span beside it: the last surviving stretch of Henry Flagler's railroad crossing, rebuilt and reopened to the public in January 2022.
It is about 2.2 miles from the Marathon end to the ramp down onto the island, open to walkers, runners and cyclists seven days a week, with the ramp itself open daily from nine until five. There is no traffic on it and no shade either, which is worth knowing before a July afternoon.

The Island
The island carries eleven historic buildings and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since March 1990. Nothing on it is motorised and nothing on it is far from anything else: twenty minutes will walk the whole shoreline.
It began as the camp for the men who built this stretch of the Overseas Railroad from 1908, and at its peak more than four hundred people lived here, with a post office, a commissary and a one room school.
The buildings that housed them are the ones still standing, restored and in use as classrooms, dormitories and a museum in the old assistant bridge tender's house.
