Helicopter from Miami to Pigeon Key

Almost every party comes for the village first. Eleven historic buildings still stand on the five acres, restored and back in use as classrooms, bunk rooms and a museum, and they are why the island carries a National Register listing at all.

The museum occupies the old Assistant Bridge Tender's house and holds the photographs and objects left over from the years when this was a construction camp rather than a place people visited. Guided tours run daily, and the island is small enough that an hour covers it without anybody hurrying.

A foundation runs the island and maintains the buildings, so it looks the way a working site looks rather than the way a private cay does. Say how many are coming when you send the date and the hours ashore are arranged around the tour instead of against it.

The old bridge is the other half of the visit, and from the air it is the first thing anybody points at. Its 2.2 mile section from Marathon out to the island reopened in January 2022 after a restoration costing some 44 million dollars, and it now carries walkers, runners, cyclists and anglers instead of a railway.

From the island the span runs off in both directions at eye level with the water, which is the photograph everybody takes here. On foot from the Marathon end it is two miles out and two miles back, so most people who arrive that way have spent an hour of their day before the visit starts.

Arriving by air turns that around. The walk becomes something you choose for the view rather than something you owe first, and the four miles stay optional.

Nothing about this island is accidental. In 1907 railroad engineers surveyed the five acres and picked them as the construction camp for the Seven Mile Bridge on Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad, and the bridge went up between 1908 and 1912.

More than 400 people lived here at the peak of it, in dormitories, a mess hall, a bakery and a commissary, with a post office and a one room school. The buildings that survived are the ones from that village, which is why the place reads as a working camp rather than a resort.

Later the island became the headquarters of the road and toll bridge district, and from 1968 it ran for two decades as a marine research station. Those layers are all still visible, and they are what the tour is about.

The water is the other reason to come. The island has a beach front and a dock, and the shallows around both are clear enough that guests snorkel straight from the shore rather than from a boat. That is what makes a short visit work. Nobody has to be collected, ferried out and brought back again.

Get the party into the water in the first hour and the tour still fits inside the same afternoon. If the day is meant to be spent on the water rather than on the island, a beach picnic goes to the sand instead, and water toys or a dock pickup are arranged with the flight rather than found on arrival.

The foundation that keeps the island also runs it as a marine science centre, with hands-on programmes, exhibits and residential summer camps for school age children who stay on the island for several nights. For a family day that changes what the visit is.

The same buildings that housed the bridge crews are classrooms now, so the science and the history sit in the same rooms instead of being two separate attractions on two separate stops.

Parties travelling with children are worth flagging when you send the date. Children count as passengers on the manifest and on the payload, and the hours ashore are easier to place around a programme than around a timetable.

A day that wants both is one flight with a second set-down rather than two separate bookings. Guests who want a table rather than a museum book a fly and dine day, and ground transport on the Marathon side is arranged with the flight. Anything outside the usual list goes to custom requests.

West of the bridge the chain opens into Bahia Honda at mile marker thirty seven and, a few miles further, Big Pine Key with its key deer. Both are the beaches and the backcountry rather than the history, and both are minutes away by air against an hour of driving from the same starting point.

Further along, Little Palm Island sits off Little Torch Key and is reached by water or by air and never by road, so it pairs with Pigeon Key on the same afternoon more easily than anything on the highway does. Both are flown on their own as well: Miami to Big Pine Key and Miami to Little Palm Island.

Helicopter rides Miami Pigeon Key also work as the first leg rather than the whole day. The same aircraft carries on west to Key West and the Dry Tortugas, or back north east to Islamorada and Key Largo. That is what turns one island into island hopping or a wider scenic run over the Keys.

An overnight changes the baggage rather than the route, and island logistics covers anything that has to travel separately.
