The Flight
Helicopter Miami to Florida Keys
Almost everybody arrives in the Keys the same way, and it is the one part of the trip nobody remembers fondly. The Overseas Highway runs a hundred and thirteen miles over forty two bridges, two lanes for most of it, and Key West is three and a half to four and a half hours from the city when nothing goes wrong.
A helicopter turns that road into the view. The same chain that takes an afternoon to drive passes under the glass in a single unhurried run, and the day begins where the drive would still be somewhere around Islamorada.
The Keys are not one place. They are a line of islands with a different character every twenty miles, and the whole question of a day here is which link of it you want to be standing on.
That is the choice this aircraft actually buys. There is no terminal at either end and no runway required, so the day is planned around where your party wants to be rather than around which field has a strip long enough.
Everything between the two ends is ours: the departure point, the aircraft and the crew, the slot and the ground transport waiting when you step out. Your party brings a bag and turns up.
The same chain is also flown by small plane, by private plane and by seaplane, and each of those is a different day. This is the one without a field at either end.
Plan Your Florida Keys CharterHow It Works
How a Helicopter Ride from Miami to Florida Keys Actually Works
A helicopter is not the fast way down the Keys. A jet covers the same distance in less time and lands at a field. What changes is the hour itself: what passes under the glass between the two ends, and who is in the cabin while it does.
What follows is the whole sequence in order, from the cabin and the chain to the hour you leave and what waits on the ground.
Plan Your Florida Keys CharterThe Cabin
A small cabin with glass on every side, and nobody in it but your party
A helicopter carries a handful of people rather than a cabin full, and the seats face the windows instead of each other. Nobody is sitting across the aisle, nobody is waiting for the row behind to settle, and a conversation at the far end of the cabin is still a conversation with everybody in it.
Over a chain of islands, where the whole point is what is out of the window, that is most of what the hour feels like.
The Chain Below You
A hundred and thirteen miles of islands, read from the height that shows them
The road crosses forty two bridges and the longest of them runs seven miles on its own. From the height a helicopter flies, that is not a map: you can see the Atlantic reef line on one side and the shallow backcountry flats on the other at the same moment, with the island between them narrow enough to take in whole. From a jet at altitude the same chain is a grey thread in a blue field.
The Clock
The departure time is a decision rather than a listing
Scheduled service leaves when it leaves. A charter leaves when you want it to, inside daylight and inside what the crew is legally allowed to fly. That is why a same day return from the Florida Keys works at all. If the morning slips, the aircraft waits, because it has nowhere else to be.
Which Key the Day Is About
The chain is long, and the answer changes the whole shape of the day
Key Largo at the top and Key West at the bottom are a hundred miles apart and have almost nothing in common.
Say which end the day belongs to when you send the dates, because it decides the hour you leave, what is arranged on the ground and whether the return is the same evening. Each of the individual Keys we fly to has its own page with the detail for that one.
The Weather
Weather is the one thing a charter does not make more flexible
Everything else on this page bends. Weather does not, and we would rather move a day than fly it badly. You hear from us as early as we know, and the flight is rebooked rather than flown. Because the aircraft was held for your party and nobody else, moving it is a conversation and not a queue.
After You Land
What happens on the ground is arranged before you leave Florida
A car waiting, a golf cart on an island that runs on them, a table held somewhere for the afternoon: all of it is set up with the flight rather than found on arrival. Tell us what the day is meant to look like when you send the dates and it comes back arranged, with ground transport and anything else you asked for priced alongside the aircraft.
Departure Points
Departure Points for a Miami to Florida Keys Helicopter
A helicopter can lift from a pad as easily as from a ramp, so the departure point follows your morning rather than the aircraft. These are the four we use in Miami. Select one to see exactly where it sits.
Watson Island Heliport
Watson Island, Miami
The pad on the bay between downtown and South Beach, a short boat ride from the marinas and from Fisher Island. This is the one that turns a yacht day into a flight without a drive in between. Two miles from downtown and four from Miami Beach, so it is also the shortest ground leg for anyone staying on either side of the water.
Opa-locka Executive
Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, OPF
The executive field north west of the city, with private terminal handling and the room a longer charter needs.
Miami Executive
Miami Executive Airport, TMB, Kendall
Kendall-Tamiami in the south west of the county, the shortest ground leg for Coral Gables, Pinecrest and the south of Miami-Dade. A general aviation field, so the walk from the car to the aircraft is short and nobody is waiting on a boarding call.
Miami International
Miami International Airport, MIA
A pickup rather than a base and the right one when the party lands at MIA on a commercial flight and the onward leg should start at the same airport. No aircraft is stationed here, so this one is arranged per flight and confirmed with the operator before it is quoted.
How to Charter
How to Book a Helicopter Ride Miami to Florida Keys
Chartering an aircraft is not booking a seat. There are four steps, and only the first one is yours.

Contact Us
Write to us on WhatsApp or by email. Send your dates, how many guests, where you are coming from and which part of the chain the day is about. Tell us the hour you would like to leave.
- 02
Get Aircraft and Prices Back
We check what is free on your date and send what fits your party. Seats, baggage and flight time for each one. You are pricing the whole airframe rather than a headcount, so a smaller group on the same aircraft costs the same as a full one.
- 03
Confirm and Pay
You pick the aircraft, and we set the pickup point. Then everything around the flight. Catering on board, a car or a golf cart waiting when you land, ground transport to your hotel. Flowers if the day is a special one. You approve it, you pay, and your boarding time, departure point and everything included come back to you.
- 04
Just Arrive 30 Minutes Before Departure
You will have no terminal and no queue. Just make sure you are there 30 minutes before. Then you lift off, run the chain, and the day starts.
Along the Chain
Where Helicopter Rides Miami Florida Keys Put You Down
The chain runs a hundred and thirteen miles from Key Largo down to Key West, and it is not one destination but a dozen with different habits. Which link the day belongs to decides the hour you leave, what is waiting and whether you are back the same evening.
What follows runs from the top of the chain to the end of it. Each of these has its own page with the detail for that one stop.
Plan Your Florida Keys CharterOcean Reef and the Top of Key Largo
Mile Marker 106The chain starts where the mainland lets go. Key Largo carries mile marker 106, the highest number on the road, and it is the part of the Keys most people reach first and least often see properly, because it is also the part the drive uses up getting going.
Ocean Reef sits at the very north end behind its own gate, a private community with its own harbour. Everything at this end of the chain is about the water on the Atlantic side: this is where the reef comes closest to the road, and where most diving in the Keys is done.
For a party whose day is only about the top of the chain, the helicopter run to Key Largo has the detail. From the air it is the first twenty minutes of a longer run rather than a destination of its own.
Islamorada and the Backcountry Flats
Where the Boats AreIslamorada is a string of smaller islands in the eighties on the mile marker scale, and it is the part of the chain built around boats. Houses here come with their own dock and a skiff tied to it, which tells you most of what the place is for.
The draw is the water on the gulf side rather than the ocean side. Behind the islands the sea goes shallow and pale for miles, and those backcountry flats are what parties come for: a skiff, a guide and a morning standing up looking for fish. If that is the day, the flats fishing page sets out how it is arranged.
From the air the flats are the reason to fly this stretch low. The whole pattern of channels and banks behind the chain is only legible from above, and it is the single thing parties photograph most on the way down. The Islamorada page covers a day spent here alone.
Marathon and the Seven Mile Bridge
The Middle KeysMarathon sits at mile marker fifty, halfway down, and it is where the chain does its most famous thing. The Seven Mile Bridge runs out of the western end of it across open water, the longest of the forty two bridges on the road, with the old railway bridge standing beside it.
This is the middle of the Keys in every sense. It is far enough down that the drive has become a commitment and close enough that a day here is easy by air, which is why it is the stop that changes most when you fly. Parties who want the bridge photograph want this stretch.
Marathon is also the jumping off point for the quieter islands south of it, and the Marathon page has what a day based here looks like.
Little Palm Island, a Boat From Marathon
No Road at AllLittle Palm Island is an island off the Lower Keys with no road to it. The only ways on are by water or by air, which is what keeps it as quiet as it is: there is no passing traffic because there is nowhere to pass through to. That is the clearest case on the whole chain for this aircraft.
Everything that makes the island what it is also makes it awkward to reach, and the part of the journey that usually eats the afternoon is the part a helicopter removes. How the last leg works depends on the day and on what is permitted at the time, so it is settled with the operator when you book. The Little Palm Island page has the rest.
Key West at Mile Marker Zero
The End of the LineKey West is where the numbers run out. It is a small island at the end of a hundred and thirteen miles of bridges, and almost everything visitors come for sits in the old half of it within a walk of the harbour. That compactness is why a single day here works by air and does not by road.
Driving, the round trip is most of two days with an evening in between. Flying, the afternoon is the point and the hours on either side of it are not spent in a car. It is the busiest stop on the chain and the one most parties name first. The Key West page covers a day there on its own terms.
The Dry Tortugas, Seventy Miles On
Further West AgainThe chain does not quite end at Key West. The Dry Tortugas lie about seventy miles further west, a national park of small islands around Fort Jefferson, a hexagonal brick fort ringed by reef and open sand. There is no road to it, no bridge and no town.
That is the whole appeal and also the reason most people who visit the Keys never see it: getting there and back is the day, unless the journey itself is quick. It is the longest run on this page and needs planning rather than a decision on the morning. The Dry Tortugas page sets out what is and is not possible out there.
What Travels With You
Bags and GearWhat goes in the back is weighed with the party rather than counted against a rule. Rods, a cooler, dive gear, a dress that cannot be folded: tell us at the enquiry and it is worked into the payload for the aircraft on the day. The baggage guidance sets out how that works.
A car at the Miami end to bring your party to the aircraft, and a car or a cart at the other end on the islands where that is how people get about: both are ground transport and both are booked with the flight rather than found on arrival.
If a yacht is meeting you somewhere along the chain, that is a yacht transfer and it is arranged alongside the flight. Anything heavier than luggage is a different service altogether, and that is island logistics.
Onward Along the Chain by Helicopter
Same AircraftBecause the aircraft is held for your party, the day does not have to end at one stop. Lunch at one end of the chain and the afternoon at another is a normal shape for this route, and it is the shape that is impossible by road inside a day.
If the flight is the point rather than any one island, that is a scenic flight, and if the day is about moving between several, it is island hopping. Both are planned the same way and priced with the aircraft.
The full guide to the chain sits on the Florida Keys destination page, the packaged version is the Florida Keys day trip and every stop we fly to is listed on the helicopter charter hub for the Keys.

In Detail
Helicopter from Miami to Florida Keys: Biscayne Bay, the Reef Line and Forty Two Bridges
Everything above is the day. What follows is the detail behind it: what the cabin is like and what the chain looks like from it, which key sits where along the hundred and thirteen miles, what our side takes care of before you arrive, and the occasions this flight usually exists for.
Helicopter Miami to Florida Keys: Your Party Alone, Hawk Channel and the Backcountry Flats
A helicopter Miami Florida Keys flight is a small cabin of glass
Most aircraft ask you to look past somebody else to see anything. This one does not. The cabin holds your party and the crew, and that is the whole manifest. No aisle to share, no row in front to look over, nobody whose window seat you are sitting behind. For a proposal or a birthday, the difference between private and nearly private is the whole thing.
The glass is why people pick this aircraft over a faster one. Key West lies about a hundred and thirty miles from the city in a straight line, a hundred and thirteen nautical, and a helicopter crosses it low enough that the chain arrives as a sequence: Biscayne Bay, then Hawk Channel and the reef line on the ocean side, then the pale backcountry flats on the gulf side, with the islands threaded between them.
There is no terminal at either end, and what you bring is weighed with the party instead of counted against a rule.
Helicopter Ride from Miami to Florida Keys: Key Largo at 106, Marathon at 50, Key West at Zero
The chain is measured in mile markers, and they decide the whole day
A short arrival is not about the minutes it saves. It is that the day has not started badly. Green signs count the Overseas Highway down from Key Largo at mile marker 106 to Key West at zero, and everything in the Keys is given an address on that scale.
Ocean Reef and Key Largo sit at the top, Islamorada in the eighties, Marathon around fifty, and Key West at the end of the line. Which number the day belongs to is the single thing that changes it most. Driving, the difference between 106 and zero is most of an afternoon each way. Flying, it is the difference between one view out of the window and another.
What waits on the ground is set with the flight rather than found on arrival, with ground transport priced alongside the aircraft. Where the aircraft itself sets down depends on the permissions in place on the day, so it is settled with the operator when you book rather than promised here.
Miami to Florida Keys Helicopter: Our Crew Handles the Slot, the Fuel and the Cart
Everything between the two ends is handled from our side, not yours
Flying privately does not mean fewer arrangements. It means somebody else makes them. The slot, the handling at both ends, the fuel and the crew hours are ours to arrange, and they are arranged before the date rather than on it.
You are told the boarding time and the departure point once the flight is confirmed, and that is the whole of what your party has to keep track of.
The same is true of the ground. A car in Miami to bring your party to the aircraft, a cart or a driver at the other end on islands where that is how people get about: both are booked with the flight and priced with it, so nothing is being negotiated while everybody stands in the sun.
If the party changes before the flight, tell us. A name added or dropped is a message to us rather than a problem for you, and the page sets out what we need and by when.
Miami Florida Keys Helicopter Tours: Birthdays, Anniversaries and the Run Down to Key West
Most of these flights happen because a date has to look like something
Most flights on this route exist because of a date rather than a destination. A helicopter suits an occasion because the arrival is part of it. The run down the chain is what people photograph, before anybody has said why the day matters.
A birthday that leaves late enough for everybody. An anniversary where the catering on board is part of the surprise. Some parties book Miami Florida Keys helicopter tours for the flight itself and treat the island at the end as the excuse to go.
A helicopter Miami Florida Keys booking can also mean two days. If the flight is the point, a scenic flight needs no destination at all. If the chain is, a Florida Keys day trip is the shape, with the hours in the Keys and the extras you asked for.
Questions
Helicopter Miami to Florida Keys: Questions Answered
How long is the helicopter flight from Miami to the Florida Keys?
It depends which key the day is about, because the chain is a hundred and thirteen miles long and Key West is about a hundred and thirty miles from the city in a straight line.
A helicopter is not the fastest way to cover that, and that is rarely what decides it. What decides it is what the hour looks like: low over the bridges and the flats, unhurried, in a cabin that carries your party and nobody else.
Which key should we fly to?
Whichever one the day is actually about, and they are not interchangeable. Key Largo and Ocean Reef are at the top of the chain and closest to the city. Islamorada is the fishing and boating end.
Marathon sits in the middle at the Seven Mile Bridge. Key West is at the bottom and is the one with the old town. Tell us what the party wants to do and we will say which end that points to.
Where does the helicopter leave from in Miami?
Miami's heliport sits about two miles from Downtown and four from Miami Beach, which for most parties is a short drive rather than a journey. Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach are also possible and have their own pages. Tell us where your party is actually staying and the departure point is picked around that rather than the other way round.
Where exactly does the helicopter set down in the Keys?
That depends on the key, on the day and on the permissions in place at the time, so it is settled with the operator when you book rather than promised on a web page.
What we hold is the flight and the arrangements around it, and both come back to you before anything is confirmed. If a particular spot matters to your plan, say so at the enquiry and you will get a straight answer before you pay anything.
Can we choose our own departure time?
Yes, within daylight and within what the crew is allowed to fly. That is the main thing a charter buys you on this route.
The hour is set when you confirm and can still be moved afterwards if your day changes, because the aircraft is not going anywhere else and there are no other passengers to inconvenience. On a run this short a two hour shift at the far end is the difference between a rushed lunch and a full afternoon.
Is anyone else on the helicopter?
No. A charter carries the people you name and nobody else. There is no seat assignment, no other party sharing the cabin, and no risk of the flight leaving without part of your group. The passenger list can also change up to shortly before the flight: a name added or dropped is a message to us rather than a rebooking on yours.
Is this faster than driving?
Considerably, and that is the least interesting part of it. The Overseas Highway runs a hundred and thirteen miles over forty two bridges and is two lanes for most of its length, so Key West is three and a half to four and a half hours from the city when the road is behaving.
The reason people book the aircraft is usually not the hours it saves but that the drive stops being something to get through and becomes the thing you came to see.
How early do we need to be there?
About thirty minutes. There is no terminal to cross and no queue to join at either end. You arrive, you walk out and you go, and the boarding time and departure point are before the day.
What can you see on the way down?
The chain itself, the whole way. A helicopter flies low enough that the reef line on the Atlantic side and the shallow backcountry flats on the gulf side are both legible at once, with the islands and the bridges threaded between them. The Seven Mile Bridge from this height is the picture people remember. From a jet at altitude the same thing is a grey thread in a blue field.
Can we do it as a day trip?
Yes, and most parties do. Both ends are quick, and the return hour stays movable while you are still down there. A morning out and an evening back is the normal shape of this route rather than the ambitious version of it, and it works further down the chain than a drive ever does.
What if the weather turns on the day?
The day moves. Weather is the one thing a charter does not make flexible, and we would rather move a flight than fly it badly. You are told as early as we know, and the aircraft is rebooked to a date that works for your party. Because it was held for you and nobody else, moving it is a conversation rather than a queue for the next available seat.
How many people fit?
It depends on the aircraft and on what the party is carrying, which is why the answer comes with the quote rather than before it.
Send the headcount and the bags at the enquiry and you get back what is free on your date, what each one takes and what each one costs. You are pricing the airframe rather than a headcount, so the cost per person falls as the group grows.
Can I bring a pet on a helicopter charter?
Yes, pets travel in the cabin with you. The one thing we ask is that you tell us at the enquiry, with the type of animal and its weight, so the seating and the load plan are right from the start.
