The chain starts where the mainland ends, and the first strip is at the north end of Key Largo. Ocean Reef is a private field of 4,456 feet of asphalt, built for the club that surrounds it, and it is the shortest leg of the four from Miami.

Islamorada and the Backcountry Flats
Where the Boats Are
Islamorada is a string of four islands about halfway between Key Largo and Marathon, and it is the part of the chain built around water not around a town. Bonefish and tarpon flats on the Gulf side, the reef a few miles out on the Atlantic side.
There is no strip on Islamorada itself, so a flight here lands at Ocean Reef or Marathon and the last piece is a short drive. That is worth knowing before the day rather than on it, and it is the sort of thing the Islamorada page goes into properly. Guests who want to be on the water rather than beside it usually pair the day with flats fishing.
Marathon and the Seven Mile Bridge
The Middle Keys
Marathon has the middle of the chain to itself. One runway of 5,008 feet, running alongside the Overseas Highway, with the eastern end of the Seven Mile Bridge a few minutes away by road. It is the most useful field of the four for anything that is not Key West, because from here the drive is short in both directions.

Little Palm Island, a Boat From Marathon
No Road at All
Little Palm sits off Little Torch Key and has no road to it at all. The last stretch is a boat, and the leg before that is a landing at Marathon and a short drive down the highway.
That combination is the reason people fly rather than drive to this one: four hours of road before a boat is a different kind of arrival than forty minutes of air before the same boat. Key West at the Bottom of the Chain
Mile Marker Zero
Key West International closes the chain with a runway of 5,076 feet, two miles east of the old town. It is the busiest of the four and the only one most people have heard of, and it is the reason this route exists as a day trip at all.
From the apron the old town is a few minutes away: the harbour, Duval Street, the fort at the western end and the sunset crowd at Mallory Square. The green mile markers along the highway count down to zero here, which is a detail everybody who has driven it remembers and nobody who flies it sees.

The Dry Tortugas, Further West Again
Seventy Miles On
The chain does not stop at Key West. Seventy miles further west, out where there is nothing else at all, the Dry Tortugas carry a nineteenth century fort on an island barely bigger than the fort itself.
There is no runway out there, so the last leg is water rather than wheels and the Dry Tortugas page says how that is flown. It is the clearest case on this page of a place where the aircraft changes rather than the plan.
