Boot Key Harbor and the Waterfront
Where the Boats Are
Boot Key Harbor is the working half of Marathon: a large protected mooring field with boats on every ball, and the restaurants and bars that go with a harbour rather than with a resort. It is minutes from the runway.
That is why a lot of these flights happen: somebody has a boat here or is joining one. Provisions, a part or a case of something for the galley travel on the same airframe under island logistics, and a transfer straight to the yacht is arranged with the flight rather than on arrival.
The Old Seven Mile Bridge and Pigeon Key
Two Miles on Foot
The old Seven Mile Bridge was part of Henry Flagler's Overseas Railway and it now carries people rather than cars: about two and a bit miles of it are open for walking and cycling, running out over open water beside the modern span you drove or flew over.
At the far end sits Pigeon Key, reachable on foot, by bicycle or by ferry, with a museum of the railroad era in the old workers' village. It is a morning rather than a stop, and it is the piece of Marathon that has nothing to do with boats.

The Turtle Hospital
Mile Marker 48.5
The Turtle Hospital is at mile marker 48.5 on the bay side, a few minutes the other way from the runway. Its guided tours run about ninety minutes and go behind the scenes: the tanks, the surgery, the animals in treatment and the permanent residents that cannot be released.
It is the fixture that makes Marathon work as a family day rather than as a fishing day. Children need no documents at all on this route, which is the part parents ask about first.
Bahia Honda and the Bridges South

Bahia Honda State Park is the next island south, with two beaches, a marina, a dive shop and cabins. From the runway it is a short drive over the Seven Mile Bridge rather than another flight. The bridges themselves are the fishing.
