The Crossing
Seaplane from Miami to Marathon Florida by Private Charter
Marathon sits in the middle of the Florida Keys, halfway between Key Largo and Key West. It is the one address in the chain that a seaplane improves more than any other. It is close enough to Miami to be a morning, far enough down the road that driving eats the day.
Vaca Key and the islands either side of it lie about 80 nautical miles from downtown Miami, 92 statute, almost all of it over water and reef. The same trip by car is roughly 115 miles of US-1 across 42 bridges, which is a beautiful drive once and a chore the second time.
Everything between the two ends is ours: the departure point in Miami, the aircraft and the crew, the set-down at the Marathon end and whatever is waiting on the ground when you step off. Your party brings a bag and nothing else.
It is one of several seaplane routes out of the city and the shortest of the ones that end in the Florida Keys. The aircraft is a small plane on floats. How many seats that is on your date comes with the quote.
Plan Your Marathon CharterHow It Works
How a Seaplane Miami to Marathon Florida Actually Works
Marathon is the rare Keys address where the aircraft is not the complicated part. What decides the day instead is daylight, water state and where you want to be standing when the engine stops. What follows is the whole sequence in order, from the water at the Miami end to the last light on the way home.
Plan Your Marathon CharterDistance and Time
Eighty nautical miles down the reef line, about half an hour of it in the air
Downtown Miami to Marathon is roughly 92 statute miles, just over 80 nautical, almost all of it water. At the cruising speed of a float aircraft that is about half an hour airborne, plus the taxi out and the set-down at the far end. The block time for your date comes with the quote: BLOCK TIME AND BOARDING TIME TO CONFIRM.
The Road You Are Not Driving
The alternative is 115 miles of US-1 across 42 bridges and it is not quick
The Overseas Highway is one road with no second option, so a lane closure at Key Largo is your afternoon. A clear run from Miami is a little over two hours to Marathon. A Friday in season, a holiday weekend or an accident on an island with nowhere to turn around is a different number entirely.
The Whole Aircraft
The aircraft is chartered whole, so your party flies to Marathon together and comes home together
The aircraft stays in the Keys rather than turning around, so six hours ashore means six hours.
Water Landing
The floats land on the water, so there is no runway and no rental car
Marathon does have a runway, the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport in the middle of Vaca Key. A wheeled arrival there is a real option when the water is rough.
It also puts you on an apron rather than at the water, which is the whole point of the aircraft. The set-down point we use is WATER SET-DOWN POINT AT THE MARATHON END TO CONFIRM. The mechanics of a water arrival sit in the water landing guide.
One Clock Instead
The daylight window is what fixes a Marathon day
Bring the identification you would bring to any US airport and that is the whole document question. What may travel with you sits in the baggage guidance, because a float aircraft is payload limited whatever the route. The rule that does apply is light. Water landings run from 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset, so a seaplane day has a hard end rather than an open one.
The Way Back
The way back from Marathon is set by the light rather than by an office, so it moves through the year
Sunset in the Keys moves by well over an hour between December and June, so the latest useful departure comes with your date rather than as a standing time. A return that would land after dark goes to a lit runway instead of the water. Nothing about that changes the party, the aircraft or the price, it changes where the last five minutes happen.
Departure Points
Departure Points for a Seaplane to Marathon Florida from Miami
A seaplane needs no airport at the Miami end, so the departure point follows your morning rather than the aircraft. Two of these four put you on the water, two on a ramp.
Miami Seaplane Base
555 NE 15th St, Miami
The water departure, on Biscayne Bay just north of downtown. Boarding is from the dock, so nothing between the car and the aircraft looks like an airport. The shortest ground leg for Brickell, downtown and the beach and the usual choice when a yacht is the other half of the day.
Opa-locka Executive
Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, OPF
The executive airport north west of the city, with private terminal handling at both ends of the day.
Miami Executive
Miami Executive Airport, TMB, Kendall
Kendall-Tamiami, in the south west of the county. When the aircraft for your date is already based at this field, the charter starts without a positioning leg. That matters most on a same day return, where an hour lost in Florida is an hour lost at the far end.
Miami International
Miami International Airport, MIA
A pickup rather than a base and the right one when the party is already landing at MIA and the onward leg should leave from the same airport. No aircraft is stationed here, so it is arranged per flight and confirmed with the operator before it is quoted.
How to Charter
How to Charter a Miami to Marathon Florida Seaplane
Chartering a seaplane is not booking a seat. There are four steps, and only the first one is yours.
Plan Your Marathon Charter- 01
Contact Us
Write to us on WhatsApp or by email. Send your dates, how many guests, where you are coming from and where you want to travel. Tell us the hour you would like to leave. A seaplane lands on water and on runways. Your pickup can be a marina, a hotel dock or a beach, and an airport works just as well.
- 02
Get Aircraft and Prices Back
We check what is free on your date and send the seaplanes that fit. Seats, baggage and flight time for each one. Every aircraft costs a little differently, so we can find the best fit for you.
- 03
Confirm and Pay
You pick the aircraft, and we set the pickup point and the landing site. Then everything around the flight. Catering on board, a car or a golf cart waiting when you land, ground transport to your hotel or back to the airport. Flowers if the day is a special one. You approve it, you pay, and your boarding time, departure point and everything included come back to you.
- 04
Just Arrive 30 Minutes Early
You will have no terminal and no queue. Just make sure you are there 30 minutes before. Then you take off, land right at your destination, and enjoy the day.
In the Middle Keys
Where a Miami to Marathon Florida Seaplane Puts You Down
Marathon is not one island. It is a run of them either side of Vaca Key, with the Atlantic on one shoulder and the Gulf on the other. The water landing puts you between the two.
What follows is what parties actually do with the hours in between, in the order they ask for it.
Plan Your Marathon CharterSombrero Reef and the Lighthouse
Most Asked ForMost come for the water first. Sombrero Reef lies a few miles off the ocean side of Marathon, a spur and groove reef inside the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and shallow enough that snorkellers and divers are looking at the same coral from different depths.
The marker above it is the Sombrero Key lighthouse, an iron pile tower finished in 1858 and the tallest of the reef lights in the Keys. It was automated in 1960 and switched off for good in 2015, so it now stands over the reef as a landmark rather than as a working light.
The reef work itself happens from the island rather than from the aircraft. The boats leave from the harbours in Marathon, minutes from where the seaplane sets you down, so half a day in the water and a long lunch ashore both fit inside the same visit.
Say how many are swimming when you send the date and say whether anyone is diving rather than snorkelling: a dive boat and a snorkel boat are not always the same boat.
The Flats, the Bridges and the Blue Water
Fishing DaysIf the day is about fish rather than swimming, Marathon is one of the serious addresses in Florida. It is serious in three different directions at once. On the Gulf side the backcountry flats hold tarpon, bonefish and permit in shin deep water. The bridges either side of town hold tarpon of their own through the spring.
A few miles out on the ocean side the bottom falls away into blue water and the day becomes mahi, tuna and reef fishing over snapper and grouper. That is why parties book bonefishing and flats access or a full fishing day by seaplane. Rods and gear travel, within the payload for the aircraft on the day.
Turtles, Dolphins and Crane Point
Out of the WaterMarathon is the part of the Keys that works with children along, because three of its best known places are on land and within a few minutes of each other. The Turtle Hospital at mile marker 48.5 is a working rescue and rehabilitation centre rather than an attraction built around one.
Its guided tour runs about ninety minutes behind the scenes. The Dolphin Research Center sits at the northern end on Grassy Key. Crane Point in the middle of town is 63 acres of hardwood hammock with a museum and a nature centre inside it.
None of the three needs a boat or a tide, which is what makes them the reliable half of a day here. A car at the dock turns all three into one afternoon.
Pigeon Key and the Old Seven Mile Bridge
A Walk Into 1912The Seven Mile Bridge leaves the western end of Marathon. Beside the road bridge stands the old one. It was built for Henry Flagler's Over-Sea Railroad, the line that reached Key West in 1912. It is the reason the Keys are a place you can drive to at all.
A 2.2 mile stretch of it reopened in January 2022 after a 44 million dollar restoration and is now walked, run and cycled out over open water. It ends at Pigeon Key, five acres carrying eight buildings on the National Register of Historic Places: the camp that housed the men who built the bridge, kept as it was.
It is the one thing here that is neither a beach nor a boat. It is the reason a good number of guests come back a second time.
Sombrero Beach and Curry Hammock
A Short RideThe Keys are not a beach coast, which is exactly why the two proper beaches in Marathon matter. Sombrero Beach at the end of Sombrero Beach Road is free and open from sunrise to sunset, with shaded pavilions, grills and a kayak launch. Turtles nest along it in season.
Curry Hammock State Park a few minutes north is over a thousand acres of shoreline and hammock and it is the quiet alternative to the famous park further south. Its flats are shallow enough to wade. Add water toys if the party wants the afternoon on the water rather than on the sand, or a beach picnic if the point of the day is a table nobody else is sitting at.
Boot Key Harbor
Where the Boats AreBoot Key Harbor is the reason Marathon feels like a working sea town rather than a resort strip. It is one of the largest protected harbours in the Keys and the city runs a mooring field of 226 balls inside it, first come first served, no reservations.
It fills around Thanksgiving and generally stays full into the middle of February, which tells you most of what you need to know about the season here: the boats come for the winter and they stay.
If a boat of yours is in the harbour or anchored off, the aircraft can set the party down alongside instead of at a pier. That is a yacht transfer. A dock pickup covers the version where the boat comes to you.
Bahia Honda and the Lower Keys
Minutes SouthPast the far end of the Seven Mile Bridge the water opens again at Bahia Honda, wide white sand on both the Atlantic and the Gulf side with the broken arc of the old railroad bridge standing behind it. It is named among the best beaches in Florida about as often as anywhere in the state.
Beyond it lies Big Pine Key and the lower chain. By road that is another bridge and another queue. By air it is minutes, which is the whole argument for arriving in the middle of the Keys rather than at one end of them.
Onward Down the Keys
Same AircraftA private seaplane charter Miami to Marathon also works as the first leg rather than the whole day. The same aircraft carries on north to Islamorada and Key Largo or south to Key West and the Dry Tortugas, seventy miles past the last road.
That is what turns one island into island hopping. Overnight changes the baggage rather than the route. The full island guide sits on the Marathon destination page, the packaged version is the Marathon getaway day trip and the rest of the chain is on the Florida Keys destinations page.

In Detail
Seaplane from Miami to Marathon Florida: The Reef Line, the Bridges and a Water Landing
Everything above is the day. What follows is the detail behind it: the run down the reef line, what the middle Keys hold, the rest of the chain and what charter and private actually change about a flight to the Florida Keys.
Seaplane Miami to Marathon Florida: Flying Low Over the Reef and the Flats
Room enough and a window each on a Marathon Florida seaplane
The crossing is not dead time between two airports. A seaplane runs low and slow, so the water under the wing is the first thing the day gives you. Vaca Key and the islands either side of it lie about 80 nautical miles from downtown Miami, 92 statute, almost all of it over water and reef. Sombrero Reef sits a few miles off the ocean side, the backcountry flats begin on the Gulf side and both are reached by boat from the same harbour, so flats fishing and a beach picnic are the two things guests add most often. The date comes first and the aircraft is planned around it, so a lunch that cannot move or a boat that leaves at a set hour sets the hour of the flight rather than the other way round. Charter the aircraft and it is yours alone: the crew and the day belong to your party. Every seat is a window seat on seaplanes in the fleet of this size, so nobody watches the crossing over someone's shoulder. Other seaplane routes from Miami fly the same way.
Seaplane to Marathon Florida from Miami: You Decide the Departure Time
Your hour, your names and a seaplane to Marathon Florida
Nobody hands you a timetable on a charter. The day is built around the hour you name. You name the hour you want to lift off, the hour you want to be standing on Marathon Florida and which water in the city suits your morning. The aircraft belongs to your party for the day, so all three are your decision rather than a departure somebody else set, and a change the week before is a message to us. If the drive is shorter the other way, the same day runs out of Fort Lauderdale. Half an hour before the lift-off is the whole of the check-in. Your party walks from the car to the aircraft, the bags go on in front of you, and the list for that flight carries your names and nobody else's. Nothing about the morning waits on a stranger. And the crossing is a reason in itself. The windows are deep and the aircraft crosses low, so there is room for everybody to sit and watch the water change instead of taking turns at one of them.
Seaplane Flights from Miami to Marathon Florida: Nothing to File, Nothing to Carry
No customs and no check-in desk on a Marathon Florida charter
A seaplane from Miami to Marathon Florida stays inside Florida, so there is no border to clear and no paperwork anybody has to file. The flight never leaves the country, so there is no declaration, no port of entry and no passport check at either end. Your party needs photo identification and nothing more. Everything around the flight is settled from our side before your party arrives, from the slot at both ends to the handling on the ramp. A chartered aircraft sits in the Keys until your party is finished, so six hours ashore is six hours. Your party walks from the car to the aircraft and the bags go on in front of you. The hold is yours too, so seaplanes in the fleet are matched to the load . What may travel sits in the baggage guidance. A departure moved by weather runs under the weather and delays policy, and a name added or dropped before the flight is a message to us rather than a problem for you.
Seaplane Miami Marathon Florida: Milestone Days and Florida Weekends
A day trip, a weekend or something to celebrate on Marathon Florida
A private seaplane from Miami to Marathon Florida is booked when the day is worth marking: a birthday, a proposal, a graduation, a weekend away with the people who matter. The flight is short enough that the occasion, not the travelling, is what the day is about. That is what a seaplane Miami Marathon Florida charter is for. The date comes first and the aircraft is planned around it, so a lunch that cannot move or a boat that leaves at a set hour sets the hour of the flight rather than the other way round. How many seats that is on your date comes with the quote. Some parties fly over for the day and are home the same evening. Others stay on and book the return for the day they want. Both are the same charter, and the whole group travels together on one booking. If there is something to celebrate, say so when you book: catering, a private chef, premium beverages and flowers travel with you. Everything is in place before you board in Miami.
Questions
Seaplane from Miami to Marathon Florida: Questions Answered
How long is the flight from Miami to Marathon?
About half an hour in the air. Marathon lies roughly 92 statute miles from downtown Miami, just over 80 nautical, almost all of it water.
The exact block time depends on the aircraft and the departure point and it is confirmed with the boarding time before you book. What sets the length of the day is not the flight. It is the daylight window and how long the aircraft waits for you.
How many of us can fly to Marathon on one charter?
The aircraft is chartered whole rather than sold by the seat, so the party travels together and comes home on the same aircraft. A float aircraft is payload limited rather than seat limited, so passengers, bags and fuel run through one calculation. Full names go in when you book, children and infants included, because everyone on board counts against the payload.
Where does the seaplane land at Marathon?
On the water. Marathon also has a runway, the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport in the middle of Vaca Key. A wheeled arrival there is the honest answer on a rough morning. It leaves you on an apron with a drive still ahead of you, which is the one thing the aircraft was meant to remove. The set-down point we use for your date comes with the quote.
Is flying to Marathon faster than driving the Overseas Highway?
Yes. The gap is bigger than the clock suggests. The drive is about 115 miles of US-1 across 42 bridges and a clear run takes a little over two hours from Miami.
There is no second road, so one closure at Key Largo becomes your afternoon and a holiday weekend is its own category. Half an hour in the air turns a Keys day into a morning out rather than a weekend away.
Can you do Marathon as a day trip from Miami?
Yes and it is the most common way parties do it. Out in the morning, back before dark, with the aircraft waiting in the Keys rather than turning around, so six hours ashore means six hours, and the only fixed points in the day are the light and whatever you booked on the water. Nothing about it is shared with anyone.
How late can we fly back from Marathon on the same day?
A seaplane needs daylight on the water. Landings run from 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset, so the day has a hard end rather than an open one.
Sunset in the Keys moves by well over an hour across the year, which is why the latest useful departure for your date comes with the quote rather than as a standing time. A return arriving after dark lands on a lit runway instead of on water.
How many people can fly to Marathon on one charter?
The aircraft is chartered whole rather than sold by the seat, so your party travels together on one booking and comes home on the same aircraft. How many seats that is depends on which aircraft flies your date and on the payload once baggage is aboard, so it is confirmed with the quote rather than promised in advance. Send the headcount and say whether children are travelling.
How much luggage can we take to Marathon and can we bring rods or dive gear?
Rods, dive gear and hard cases all travel regularly, within the payload for the aircraft on the day. The limit is a weight rather than a bag count, which is why bulky equipment is declared when you book rather than weighed at the dock: it comes out of the same payload the passengers do. Marathon is a fishing and diving address, so this question comes up on most of these flights.
What happens if the weather stops the Marathon flight?
Water operations depend on wind and sea state as well as visibility, so a departure can move on a day that looks clear from the beach. Summer afternoons move return legs more often than mornings.
The call belongs to the operator rather than the guest and you are told before you book how a moved departure is handled. Because the aircraft carries only your party, a new slot is agreed with you rather than assigned to you.
Can you fly to Marathon from Fort Lauderdale or West Palm Beach instead?
Yes. Marathon is reachable from every departure point in the corridor and the run from Miami is the shortest of them, because Miami is the closest city to the top of the chain.
The right departure point is the one closest to where you are staying rather than the one closest to the Keys, since the drive north costs more than the extra minutes in the air. Say where the morning starts.
What does a private seaplane charter from Miami to Marathon cost?
A charter is priced as a whole aircraft, not per seat, so the number moves with three things: which aircraft flies your date, how many of you there are once bags are aboard and how long the aircraft waits in the Keys. Tell us those and you get one all-in number, with the departure point, the boarding time and the hours ashore it is based on, before anything is due.
Can the seaplane take us from Marathon on to Key West or the Dry Tortugas the same day?
Yes. Marathon sits in the middle of the chain rather than at the end of it. The same aircraft carries on south to Key West and out to the Dry Tortugas, seventy miles past the last road.
Say so when you send the date, because a second leg changes the timing and the fuel. For a yacht or a sandbank we pass the coordinates, the pilots decide whether they can put down there and a tender has to be in the water to collect you.
Can I bring a pet on a seaplane charter?
Yes, pets travel in the cabin with you. The one thing we ask is that you tell us at the enquiry, with the type of animal and its weight, so the seating and the load plan are right from the start.
