The Crossing
Seaplane Miami to Exuma by Private Charter
The Exumas are the long thin chain that people mean when they say the Bahamas look unreal from the air. A seaplane Miami to Exuma is the way in that ends at the cay rather than at an airport on a different one. Staniel Cay sits about 260 statute miles from downtown Miami, roughly 226 nautical. George Town at the southern end is about 318 statute miles, 276 nautical. Almost every mile of both is open water.
One thing shapes the whole day and it is worth knowing before you plan anything else: Staniel Cay has no customs. A flight out of Florida never goes straight there. It clears at a Bahamian port of entry first then flies the last leg, so the day is built around where that clearance happens not around the distance.
All of that is ours: the departure point in Miami, the aircraft and the crew, the clearance stop, both border filings and the travel documents the Bahamas wants before you leave Florida. Your party brings passports and a bag.
This is the longest crossing we fly from a seaplane base in Miami and one of several seaplane routes out of the city. The aircraft is a small plane on floats, eight seats and nine in some configurations. Direct it is about an hour and a half in the air, closer to two hours on the way out with the clearance stop inside it.
Plan Your Exumas CharterHow It Works
How a Seaplane from Miami to Exuma Actually Works
The Exumas are further than they look on a map and the flying is the simple half. The part that decides the day is where you clear customs. Most of the cays people come for have no customs desk at all, so a clearance stop is not a delay somebody failed to avoid.
It is the route and it is planned before the date is confirmed. What follows is the whole sequence in order, from the water in Miami to the ramp where the day finishes on the way home.
Plan Your Exumas CharterDistance and Time
Two hundred and sixty miles of open water before the chain even begins
Downtown Miami to Staniel Cay is roughly 260 statute miles, about 226 nautical. George Town at the southern end is 318 statute, 276 nautical. Highbourne Cay at the northern tip is 223. Add the clearance stop and the turn on the ground and you have the shape of the morning: about two hours out and about an hour and a half coming home once the clearance is behind you.
The Clearance Stop
The middle of the chain has no customs desk, so the flight clears on the way
The Bahamas lets an aircraft arrive only at a designated port of entry. Exuma International at George Town is one. Staniel Cay and Norman's Cay, both with a paved strip, are not.
The operator's usual routing puts a clearance stop about an hour and ten minutes out of Florida, a turn of about half an hour on the ground, then the last leg into the cays, which puts the whole trip at roughly one hour forty five to two hours.
The second routing clears at Bimini and carries on from there. Which one you fly is our call rather than yours. The first is Andros, which carries three desks of its own between San Andros, Fresh Creek and Congo Town.
The Whole Aircraft
The aircraft is chartered whole, so your party flies to the Exumas together and comes home together
The aircraft stays in the islands rather than turning around, so an afternoon on the water is an afternoon rather than a departure time you fly home to.
Leaving Miami
Leaving Miami for the Exumas means the manifest is filed before you reach the dock
Every passenger needs a valid passport, children and infants included and a driving licence will not do. What counts as valid is in the travel documents guidance. Names and numbers go in from our side, in advance.
Water Landing
The floats put you down beside the cay, not on a strip on another island
A runway arrival in the middle Exumas lands at Staniel Cay and stops there. A seaplane can set down on the water beside the cay you actually want, which is the whole argument for floats in a chain of small islands. The mechanics sit in the water landing guide and the same aircraft reaches the rest of the Bahamas by seaplane.
The Way Back
The way back from the Exumas carries its own clock and it ends at US customs in Florida
Water landings run only from 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset, so nothing on floats arrives in the dark and the return leg carries a deadline from the moment the date is set.
On a Nassau winter day that means a last water departure around 18:11 against a sunset of 18:41 and both ends move through the year. A return that would arrive after dark needs a lit runway rather than water. The clearance desks themselves run 09:00 to 17:30, so on most dates the desk closes the day before the light does.
The return is filed with US Customs before you leave and that filing decides where the aircraft may put down in South Florida. Opa-locka Executive is where a return from the islands clears, so a day that started on the water often finishes on a ramp. Both ends are ours.
Departure Points
Departure Points for a Seaplane from Miami to Exuma
A seaplane needs no airport at the Miami end, so the departure point follows your morning rather than the aircraft. Two of these four put you on the water, two on a ramp.
Miami Seaplane Base
555 NE 15th St, Miami
The water departure, on Biscayne Bay just north of downtown. Boarding is from the dock, so nothing between the car and the aircraft looks like an airport. The shortest ground leg for Brickell, downtown and the beach and the usual choice when a yacht is the other half of the day.
Opa-locka Executive
Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, OPF
The executive airport north west of the city, with private terminal handling at both ends of the day. It is also where a return from the islands clears US customs, which is why an international day that leaves from the water often comes back here rather than to the dock it started from.
Miami Executive
Miami Executive Airport, TMB, Kendall
Kendall-Tamiami, in the south west of the county. When the aircraft for your date is already based at this field, the charter starts without a positioning leg. That matters most on a same day return, where an hour lost in Florida is an hour lost at the far end.
Miami International
Miami International Airport, MIA
A pickup rather than a base and the right one when the party is already landing at MIA and the onward leg should leave from the same airport. No aircraft is stationed here, so it is arranged per flight and confirmed with the operator before it is quoted.
How to Charter
How to Charter a Miami to Exuma Seaplane
Chartering a seaplane is not booking a seat. There are four steps, and only the first one is yours.
Plan Your Exumas Charter- 01
Contact Us
Write to us on WhatsApp or by email. Send your dates, how many guests, where you are coming from and where you want to travel. Tell us the hour you would like to leave. A seaplane lands on water and on runways. Your pickup can be a marina, a hotel dock or a beach, and an airport works just as well.
- 02
Get Aircraft and Prices Back
We check what is free on your date and send the seaplanes that fit. Seats, baggage and flight time for each one. Every aircraft costs a little differently, so we can find the best fit for you.
- 03
Confirm and Pay
You pick the aircraft, and we set the pickup point and the landing site. Then everything around the flight. Catering on board, a car or a golf cart waiting when you land, ground transport to your hotel or back to the airport. Flowers if the day is a special one. You approve it, you pay, and your boarding time, departure point and everything included come back to you.
- 04
Just Arrive 30 Minutes Early
You will have no terminal and no queue. Just make sure you are there 30 minutes before. Then you take off, land right at your destination, and enjoy the day.
In the Islands
Where a Seaplane to Exuma from Miami Puts You Down
The Exumas are 365 cays strung out over 130 miles of shallow water and that is the whole reason floats make sense here. There is no single place called Exuma to land at.
What follows is what parties actually do with the hours in the islands, in the order they ask for it.
Plan Your Exumas CharterThe Swimming Pigs at Big Major Cay
Most Asked ForThis is the reason most parties come and it is worth saying plainly: the pigs are wild, they live on an uninhabited cay and they swim out to meet a boat because people have been feeding them for decades.
Big Major Cay is a few minutes by boat from Staniel Cay, so the landing point matters more here than the flight time. Set down in the middle of the chain and the pigs are a short run away. Set down at George Town and they are an hour by water.
Thunderball Grotto
Snorkel DepthA hollow limestone cay with the roof open to the sky, so the light comes down in shafts and the fish sit in it. You swim in at slack water through a gap that is only comfortable when the current is not running.
It sits just off Staniel Cay, in the same short run of water as the pigs and the sharks, so the three of them are usually one afternoon rather than three outings. The tide decides the hour, not the aircraft.
The Nurse Sharks at Compass Cay
Calm WaterNurse sharks gather at the marina dock at Compass Cay and people get in with them. They are the calm half of the Bahamian shark reputation and the version that works with children along. Compass Cay is north of Staniel Cay, on the same line as the grotto and the pigs, so a boat afternoon runs the three of them as one loop. Say how many are getting in the water when you send the date.
Staniel Cay and the Yacht Club
Where the Day StartsStaniel Cay is the hub of the middle chain: a small settlement, a marina and a strip of 3,030 feet that is long enough for a small plane but has no customs desk. That single fact shapes every itinerary here.
For a seaplane it is simply where the boats and the golf carts are. A golf cart on the dock and a boat for the afternoon are both arranged with the flight rather than after you land and a table ashore is a fly and dine day.
The Rock Iguanas on Bitter Guana Cay
A Short HopBahamian rock iguanas live on a handful of cays and nowhere else on earth. Bitter Guana Cay is the one most parties see and Allen's Cay at the northern end of the chain is the other.
Both are beaches you arrive at by water rather than places you book into. They fit a day that is already running the pigs and the grotto, which is the argument for treating the middle chain as one afternoon rather than a list of separate stops.
Allen's Cay sits beside Highbourne Cay at the top of the chain and Highbourne has no airstrip at all. That is the clearest case for floats in this corridor: a cay a runway cannot reach is a short water landing away, once the clearance is behind you.
The Plane Wreck off Norman's Cay
Ten Feet DownA twin engine aircraft lies in shallow water off Norman's Cay, wings still on, close enough to the surface that snorkellers and divers are looking at the same thing from different depths. It is the most photographed wreck in the chain.
Norman's Cay sits at the northern end, has a paved strip of 3,360 feet and no customs desk, so a flight from Florida clears elsewhere first whatever the strip suggests. A scenic run down the cays on the way in is the cheapest way to see the whole chain.
Pipe Creek and the Sandbars
Low Water OnlyPipe Creek is the maze of small cays and channels between Staniel Cay and Compass Cay and at low water the bank around it dries into open sand in the middle of the sea, with nothing on it and nothing around it.
That is where a beach picnic goes and where the rays come in shin deep. Add water toys for the afternoon or a dock pickup if a boat is meeting you. Low water sets the hour here, not the one you would prefer.
North of it the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park runs for miles as a protected reserve, with Warderick Wells and Shroud Cay inside it and no taking of anything from the water. It is quieter than the cays below because far fewer boats work it in a day.
George Town and Great Exuma
The Southern EndGeorge Town on Great Exuma is the other end of the chain and a different kind of day: a town, a harbour full of cruising boats, Emerald Bay up the coast and the resorts that go with it. It is also where the customs desk is.
Exuma International clears an aircraft that flies into the airport itself, so a day built around George Town has a simpler routing than one built around the middle cays. Onward flying, overnight stays and the flats behind the island are all on the Exumas destination page and a full fishing day by seaplane or bonefishing on the flats is booked from here.

In Detail
Seaplane Miami to Exuma: The Crossing, the Clearance and the Cays
Everything above is the day. What follows is the detail behind a seaplane Miami to Exuma: where the floats put you, the two borders, the rest of the chain and what charter and private actually change about a flight to the Bahamas.
Seaplane from Miami to Exuma: Flying Low Over the Reef and the Flats
Room enough and a window each on a Miami to Exuma seaplane
The crossing is not dead time between two airports. A seaplane runs low and slow, so the water under the wing is the first thing the day gives you. Staniel Cay sits about 260 statute miles from downtown Miami, roughly 226 nautical. The date comes first and the aircraft is planned around it, so a lunch that cannot move or a boat that leaves at a set hour sets the hour of the flight rather than the other way round. A beach picnic on a sandbar or island hopping down the cays are what parties add most often and both are decided by where the aircraft puts you rather than by how long the flight took. The pigs at Big Major Cay, Thunderball Grotto and the nurse sharks at Compass Cay are all a short run from Staniel Cay, so a day here works at all. Every seat is a window seat on seaplanes in the fleet of this size, so nobody watches the crossing over someone's shoulder. Other seaplane routes from Miami fly the same way.
Miami to Exuma Seaplane: You Decide the Departure Time
Your hour, your names and a seaplane to Exuma
Nobody hands you a timetable on a charter. The day is built around the hour you name. You name the hour you want to lift off, the hour you want to be standing on Exuma and which water in the city suits your morning. The aircraft belongs to your party for the day, so all three are your decision rather than a departure somebody else set, and a change the week before is a message to us. If the drive is shorter the other way, the same day runs out of Fort Lauderdale. Half an hour before the lift-off is the whole of the check-in. Your party walks from the car to the aircraft, the bags go on in front of you, and the list for that flight carries your names and nobody else's. Nothing about the morning waits on a stranger. The date comes first and the aircraft is planned around it, so a lunch that cannot move or a boat that leaves at a set hour sets the hour of the flight rather than the other way round. Set down at George Town instead and the same three are an hour away by boat. And the crossing is a reason in itself. The windows are deep and the aircraft crosses low, so there is room for everybody to sit and watch the water change instead of taking turns at one of them.
Seaplane to Exuma from Miami: The Crew Files Both Borders, You Carry a Passport
Passports are all your party carries on a Exuma crossing
A seaplane from Miami to Exuma crosses an international border twice in a day. It is the part that goes wrong when nobody files it in advance. Entry into the Bahamas asks for a declaration filed from Florida, clearance at a port of entry on arrival and a US return filed before you leave, which is what sets where you may land coming home. On a Crown Air charter the crew files all three. Your party carries a valid passport and nothing else. Passports for everyone, children included, per the travel documents guidance. What may travel sits in the baggage guidance. That same filing sets where you land coming home: a return from the islands clears at Opa-locka Executive, so a day that began on the water finishes on a ramp and a departure moved by weather runs under the weather and delays policy. A return clears at Opa-locka Executive, and a weather delay under the weather and delays policy. If the party changes before the flight, the crew refiles. A name added, a name dropped: that is a message to us rather than a problem for you.
Seaplane Flights from Miami to Exuma: Milestone Days and Bahamas Weekends
A day trip, a long weekend or something to celebrate on Exuma
A private seaplane from Miami to Exuma is booked when the day is worth marking: a birthday, a proposal, a graduation, a weekend away with the people who matter. The flight is short enough that the occasion, not the travelling, is what the day is about. That is what a seaplane flight from Miami to Exuma is for. The date comes first and the aircraft is planned around it, so a lunch that cannot move or a boat that leaves at a set hour sets the hour of the flight rather than the other way round. Some parties fly over for the day and are home the same evening. Others stay on and book the return for the day they want. Both are the same charter, and the whole group travels together on one booking. If there is something to celebrate, say so when you book: catering, a private chef, premium beverages and flowers travel with you. Everything is in place before you board in Miami.
Questions
Seaplane Miami to Exuma: Questions Answered
How long is the flight from Miami to Exuma?
Longer than the map suggests, because the clearance stop is part of it. Staniel Cay is roughly 260 statute miles from downtown Miami, about 226 nautical and George Town is 318.
The operator's usual routing runs about an hour and ten minutes to the clearance airport, half an hour on the ground and then the last leg, so one hour forty five to two hours door to water is the shape of it. Your exact block time comes with the boarding time.
Do I need a passport to fly to the Exumas?
Yes. On this route the paperwork is used twice rather than once. The Exumas are in the Bahamas, so every passenger needs a valid passport, children and infants included and the clearance happens at a port of entry on the way rather than at the cay you are heading for.
After that stamp the aircraft moves between islands on the cleared paperwork. Names, passport numbers and body weights go in when you book: a float aircraft is payload limited and the party, the bags and the fuel are one sum.
Can a seaplane fly direct from Miami to Staniel Cay in the Exumas?
Not without clearing customs on the way. That is a rule rather than a preference. Staniel Cay has a paved strip but no customs desk and the Bahamas lets an aircraft arrive only at a designated port of entry. So the flight puts down at a port of entry first, clears in about half an hour and then flies the last leg to the cay. You are not queuing at a terminal while that happens.
Where does customs actually happen on this route?
At a Bahamian port of entry chosen for your day. Exuma International at George Town is one and clearing at Bimini on the way across is the other common routing.
Which of them your flight uses depends on the departure point, the party and the cay you are heading for and it is decided by us and written into the itinerary rather than left to the morning. Norman's Cay and Staniel Cay cannot clear you, whatever the strip looks like.
Can you do the Exumas as a day trip from Miami?
Yes. Parties do it, but it is a full day rather than a morning out. The crossing plus the clearance stop is close to two hours each way and the return has to be on the water before dusk. That leaves a good afternoon in the islands if the day starts early. If you want the pigs, the grotto and a long lunch without watching the clock, an overnight is the honest answer and we will say so.
How late can we fly back from the Exumas on the same day?
A seaplane needs daylight on the water. Landings run from 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset, so the day has a hard end rather than an open one. Both ends move through the year and the customs desk closes before the sun does, so in practice the desk sets the return. The latest useful departure for your date comes with the quote. A return arriving after dark lands on a lit runway instead of on water.
How many people can fly to the Exumas on one charter?
The aircraft is chartered whole rather than sold by the seat, so your party travels together on one booking and comes home on the same aircraft. A small plane on floats carries eight, nine in some configurations and how many that is for your date depends on the payload once bags and fuel are aboard on a crossing this long. Send the headcount and say whether children are travelling: they count as passengers on an international manifest.
Can we see the swimming pigs on a seaplane day?
That is what most parties come for. The pigs are at Big Major Cay, a few minutes by boat from Staniel Cay and Thunderball Grotto and the nurse sharks at Compass Cay sit in the same short run of water.
A seaplane that sets you down in the middle of the chain puts all three inside one afternoon. Landing at George Town instead puts them an hour away by boat, which is why the set-down point is worth deciding before the date.
What happens if weather stops the flight to the Exumas?
Water operations depend on wind and sea state as well as visibility, so a departure can move on a day that looks clear from the beach. This route has two weather windows rather than one, the crossing and the leg out of the clearance airport, so the decision falls earlier here than on a short hop and summer afternoons move the return more often than the morning.
The call is the operator's. Because the aircraft carries only your party, a new slot is agreed with you rather than assigned to you and you are told how that works before you book.
Is it better to fly to the Exumas or connect through Nassau?
It depends on the far end. A connection through Nassau puts you on a second aircraft with a second schedule and lands you on a strip, which is fine if you are staying at George Town.
If the day is about the cays in the middle of the chain, the strip is not where you want to be and a chartered seaplane that clears on the way and sets down beside the cay saves the boat leg at the end rather than adding one.
Can you fly to the Exumas from Fort Lauderdale or the Florida Keys instead?
Yes. The Exumas are reachable from every departure point in the corridor and the difference in flying time between them is small next to a crossing this length. The right departure point is the one closest to where you are staying, not the one closest to the islands. Say where the morning starts and the answer comes back with it already chosen, along with where the clearance stop falls on that routing.
What does a private seaplane charter from Miami to Exuma cost?
A charter is priced as a whole aircraft, not per seat, so the number moves with three things: which aircraft flies your date, how many of you there are once bags are aboard and how long the aircraft waits in the islands.
The clearance stop is the fourth on this route, because it adds ground time and a second departure and it sits inside the number rather than appearing later as a surcharge. So do the Bahamian and US entry fees. You get one figure with the routing it is based on, before anything is due.
Can the seaplane land at a private cay or beside our yacht?
Often. It is one of the reasons this route is flown at all. For a yacht we pass the coordinates, the pilots decide whether they can put down there and a tender has to be in the water to collect you. For a private cay the same rule about ports of entry applies: the aircraft clears first and flies the last leg afterwards. Say so when you send the date, because it changes the routing rather than just the destination.
Can I bring a pet on a seaplane charter?
Yes, pets travel in the cabin with you. The one thing we ask is that you tell us at the enquiry, with the type of animal and its weight, so the seating and the load plan are right from the start.
