The Crossing
Small Plane Flights Miami to Key Largo
Key Largo is the first island of the Keys and the closest one to Miami, which is exactly why the drive is the problem. Everybody leaving the city goes the same way at the same time. There are two roads onto the island and both of them start in Florida City, so a morning that should take an hour takes whatever the Eighteen Mile Stretch decides it takes.
A small plane goes over all of it and the water underneath is the reason people remember the flight. You cross Biscayne Bay, the mangrove edge of the mainland and then Card Sound, and the colour changes under the wing three or four times before the island lines up.
What that runs in block time depends on the aircraft and the departure point and it comes back with the quote.
Everything between those two moments is ours: the departure point in Miami, the aircraft, the crew and the landing permission at the far end. Your party brings a bag and nothing else.
This is the shortest island run we fly out of the city and one of several Small Plane routes from Miami. Where the party would rather come down on the water beside the reef than on a strip at the north end, the same trip is flown by seaplane instead, which is a different aircraft and a different page.
Plan Your Key Largo CharterHow It Works
How a Small Plane Charter Miami to Key Largo Actually Works
Key Largo is the shortest island run we fly, and the only real question in the day is which runway. The island has a private strip at the north end and the mainland has a public field half an hour away, and which one fits depends on where you are going.
The short version: you board at a general aviation ramp in Miami, you are over the water inside a minute, and you come down either on the island or half an hour from it, depending on where on Key Largo you are going.
Plan Your Key Largo CharterThe Runway
There is one runway on Key Largo and it is at the far northern end
Ocean Reef Club Airport carries the identifier 07FA and a grooved asphalt strip, runway 05/23, of around 4,400 feet. That is a long way more than a small charter aircraft needs and it is the only paved runway anywhere on Key Largo.
It is at the very top of the island, north of the Card Sound bridge, which puts it closer to Miami than the rest of the Keys are.
The Permission
The strip is privately owned, so landing there is arranged before the day
07FA is listed as privately owned and private use, with permission required prior to landing. That is a fact about the airport rather than a hurdle we invented, and it is why this route starts with a conversation instead of a booking button. Tell us where you are going and who is expecting you, and the answer comes back with the quote.
The Alternative
Guests headed elsewhere on Key Largo land on the mainland and drive in
There is no public airport on the island. The nearest public general aviation field is Miami Homestead General Aviation Airport, identifier X51, on the mainland, with a paved runway 18/36 and no landing fees. From there it is roughly half an hour by road, still less than the drive from the city and far more predictable. Ground transport on that side is arranged with the flight.
Leaving Miami
Leaving Miami is a ramp and a boarding time, not a terminal
The aircraft departs from a general aviation ramp rather than a terminal. You arrive at the departure point close to the boarding time, not two hours before it, and there is no check-in desk, no security queue and nobody else on the manifest. Because the whole run stays inside Florida, coming home is the same thing in reverse: you land, you walk to the car.
Weather
Weather closes water before it closes the runway on Key Largo
A rough morning on Card Sound can make a water landing a bad idea while a paved strip is entirely unbothered. That is the practical argument for wheels on this run in winter and it is the reason we quote both. What the aircraft needs on the day is a crew decision, taken against published minimums, never a preference.
The Block
The small plane waits, which is what makes a Key Largo day trip a day trip
On a charter the airframe is yours for the block, so the return is set by you rather than by a timetable. Guests who want a night on the island tell us at the enquiry and the crew and the aircraft are planned around it. Nothing about the day is shared with anybody else's schedule.
Departure Points
Departure Points for Small Plane Flights to Key Largo from Miami
A small plane uses short fields that a jet cannot, so the departure point is chosen for your ground time. These are the four we use around Miami. Select one to see exactly where it sits.
Miami Executive
Miami Executive Airport, TMB, Kendall
Kendall-Tamiami in the south west of the county and the field both small planes sit at, the land aircraft and the amphibian. A charter that starts here starts without a positioning leg, which is what decides an early morning on a same day return. It is also the shortest drive from the south and west of the county.
Opa-locka Executive
Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, OPF
The executive airport north west of the city, with private terminal handling and the point most Bahamas day trips are dispatched from. That makes it the default on a Bahamas day unless the drive is against you.
Miami International
Miami International Airport, MIA
A pickup rather than a base, for a party already at MIA that wants the onward leg to leave from the same airport. Arranged per flight and confirmed with the operator before it is quoted. It costs ground time, because a commercial field moves on its own schedule.
Fort Lauderdale Executive
Fort Lauderdale Executive, FXE
Fort Lauderdale Executive, the Broward departure, with its own federal inspection station for the return from the islands. The usual choice when the group is north of Miami and the drive south would cost more time than the flight saves. The return clears there as readily as it does at Opa-locka.
How to Charter
Charter a Small Plane from Miami to Key Largo
Chartering an aircraft is not booking a seat. There are four steps, and only the first one is yours.
Plan Your Key Largo Charter- 01
Contact Us
Write to us on WhatsApp or by email. Send your dates, how many guests, where you are coming from and where you want to travel. Tell us the hour you would like to leave. A small plane runs airport to airport. Your pickup can also be a marina, a hotel dock or a beach. With a seaplane we can collect you there.
- 02
Get Aircraft and Prices Back
We check what is free on your date and send the small planes that fit. Seats, baggage and flight time for each one. Every aircraft costs a little differently, so we can find the best fit for you.
- 03
Confirm and Pay
You pick the aircraft, and we set the pickup point and the landing site. Then everything around the flight. Catering on board, a car or a golf cart waiting when you land, ground transport to your hotel or back to the airport. Flowers if the day is a special one. You approve it, you pay, and your boarding time, departure point and everything included come back to you.
- 04
Just Arrive 30 Minutes Early
You will have no terminal and no queue. Just make sure you are there 30 minutes before. Then you take off, land right at your destination, and enjoy the day.
On the Island
Where a Miami to Key Largo Small Plane Puts You Down
The aircraft puts you on the strip at the north end of Key Largo, above the Card Sound bridge, which is the quiet end of the island and the end closest to Miami. Everything below is reached from there, and where on the island a party is actually going is what decides which of the two runways the day uses.
What follows is what parties actually do with the hours in between, in the order they ask for it.
Plan Your Key Largo CharterWhere the Small Plane Puts Its Wheels Down on Key Largo
Where You LandThe strip sits at the very top of the island, above the Card Sound bridge. Runway 05/23, grooved asphalt, around 4,400 feet, far more than a small charter aircraft needs. From the air it is a pale line between the mangroves and the water.
It is the only paved runway anywhere on Key Largo, and it is listed as privately owned and private use, with permission required prior to landing. That is a fact about the field, not a hurdle we invented.
Say at the enquiry where you are going and who is expecting you. The answer comes back with the quote, and the Ocean Reef area page covers what sits around the strip.
The Two Roads Onto Key Largo
What You SkipThere are exactly two ways onto this island by car and both of them start in Florida City. The Eighteen Mile Stretch of US-1 is the one everybody knows and the one everybody is on. The Card Sound Road is longer, quieter and has a toll bridge, and it lands you at the top of the island.
Without traffic the drive out of Miami runs an hour to an hour and a quarter. With a holiday weekend in front of it, it runs as long as it likes, and there is no alternative route to take, because there is no alternative route.
That is the whole argument for this flight and it is worth being plain about: you are not buying speed in the air, you are buying the removal of a road with no way around it.
Homestead, the Mainland Option for Key Largo
The Other Way InKey Largo has no public airport. If the top of the island is not where you are going, the honest answer is the mainland: Miami Homestead General Aviation Airport, identifier X51, a public field with a paved runway 18/36 and no landing fees.
From there it is roughly half an hour by road, still less than the drive from the city and far more predictable, because it skips the part of US-1 that jams.
A car can be waiting on the ramp through ground transport. Which of the two fields fits your day is our question, not yours. Tell us the address at the far end and it is answered in the quote.
Canals and Quiet at the Top of Key Largo
Above the BridgeThe top of the island is the residential half. Canals, mangrove edges, low houses on the water and almost none of the dive shops and roadside signs people picture when they hear the name. That is not a drawback for a day trip, it is why the arrival is calm.
No crowd, no queue for anything, and a cart or a car can be waiting when you land. The rest of the island runs south from there along one road, with Tavernier at the far end of it before the next island begins.
Card Sound and Barnes Sound From a Small Plane
The View OverThe leg out of Miami crosses Biscayne Bay, the mangrove islands along its southern edge, then Card Sound on the bay side of the key. It is shallow water almost the whole way and a small aircraft flies low enough that you can see the bottom of it.
Seagrass reads as dark patches, sand as pale ones, the channels cut through both in a blue that does not look real. The ocean side arrives last, a different colour again. Guests who want the long way round rather than the direct line ask for a scenic routing at the enquiry and it is planned in.
Clubs, Tanks and a Cooler on a Small Plane
What Wheels CarryThis is the part of the day a runway changes most. Load on a small aircraft is a weight question rather than a bag count, and wheels have more of it to give than floats do. Dive tanks, rods, golf clubs, a cooler for the boat: all of it travels, within the payload for the aircraft on the day.
Say what is coming at the enquiry rather than at the ramp, and the baggage guidance has the trade between passengers and weight. Anything larger than luggage is a different service on the same runway and that is island logistics rather than a charter with extra bags.
Onward Down the Keys by Small Plane
Same AircraftKey Largo works as the first stop of a longer day rather than the whole of it. Because nothing on this chain is international, there is nothing to clear between legs and no office that has to be open.
The same airframe carries on south to Islamorada, Marathon and Key West, which is what turns one island into island hopping down the chain. The packaged version of a single day is the Key Largo getaway day trip.
When a Water Landing on Key Largo Wins
The Other AircraftA runway is the right answer for most of these days and not for all of them. If the point of the trip is the water off the ocean side rather than an address, wheels put you further from it than floats would.
A seaplane to Key Largo comes down on the water instead and puts the party where they were going in the first place. We quote the two against each other rather than selling one.

In Detail
Small Plane Miami to Key Largo: The Runway, the Road and the Water
Everything above is the day. What follows is the detail behind it: the strip at the north end, the two roads this flight exists to skip, what the water looks like on the way over and what charter and private actually change about a flight to the Florida Keys.
Miami to Key Largo by Small Plane: Flying Low Over the Reef and the Flats
Room enough and a window each on a Key Largo small plane
The crossing is not dead time between two airports. A small plane crosses low enough to see what is under it, so the water is part of the day rather than something to sit through. The island lies about 50 statute miles from downtown Miami, a little under 44 nautical and almost all of that is water: Biscayne Bay, then Card Sound, then the shallow green of Florida Bay on one side and the reef line on the other. The short version: you board at a general aviation ramp in Miami, you are over the water inside a minute, and you come down either on the island or half an hour from it, depending on where on Key Largo you are going. The aircraft is chartered whole, so the headcount sets the airframe rather than the fare. Every seat is a window seat on an aircraft this size, and the same is true of scenic flights of this size, so nobody watches the crossing over someone's shoulder. Other small plane routes from Miami fly the same way.
Small Plane to Key Largo from Miami: You Decide the Departure Time
Your hour, your names and a small plane to Key Largo
Nobody hands you a timetable on a charter. The day is built around the hour you name. You name the hour you want to lift off, the hour you want to be standing on Key Largo and which water in the city suits your morning. The aircraft belongs to your party for the day, so all three are your decision rather than a departure somebody else set, and a change the week before is a message to us. If the drive is shorter the other way, the same day runs out of Fort Lauderdale. Half an hour before the lift-off is the whole of the check-in. Your party walks from the car to the aircraft, the bags go on in front of you, and the list for that flight carries your names and nobody else's. Nothing about the morning waits on a stranger. Send the departure point, the number of guests and from when to when. And the crossing is a reason in itself. The windows are deep and the aircraft crosses low, so there is room for everybody to sit and watch the water change instead of taking turns at one of them.
Small Plane Charter to Key Largo from Miami: Nothing to File, Nothing to Carry
No customs and no check-in desk on a Key Largo charter
A small plane from Miami to Key Largo stays inside Florida, so there is no border to clear and no paperwork anybody has to file. The flight never leaves the country, so there is no declaration, no port of entry and no passport check at either end. Your party needs photo identification and nothing more. What is left for us to handle is the flying and the ground at both ends: the ramp in Miami, the aircraft and crew, the landing permission at the far end, and whatever has to be waiting when you get out. The landing permission at the north-end strip is arranged with your enquiry rather than on the morning, and that is the one thing on this route that would otherwise be yours to chase. You land at a general aviation ramp in Miami and walk to the car. Coming home is the same in reverse and it is genuinely uneventful. What may travel sits in the baggage guidance. A departure moved by weather runs under the weather and delays policy, and a name added or dropped before the flight is a message to us rather than a problem for you.
Small Plane Miami Key Largo: Milestone Days and Florida Weekends
A day trip, a weekend or something to celebrate on Key Largo
A private small plane from Miami to Key Largo is booked when the day is worth marking: a birthday, a proposal, a graduation, a weekend away with the people who matter. The flight is short enough that the occasion, not the travelling, is what the day is about. That is what a small plane Miami Key Largo charter is for. On a run this short that second question is the whole question: the flight is a matter of minutes, so a field twenty minutes from the house is worth more than anything you could save in the air. Some parties fly over for the day and are home the same evening. Others stay on and book the return for the day they want. Both are the same charter, and the whole group travels together on one booking. If there is something to celebrate, say so when you book: catering, a private chef, premium beverages and flowers travel with you. Everything is in place before you board in Miami.
Questions
Small Plane Charter Miami to Key Largo: Questions Answered
Can a plane land in Key Largo?
Yes, at the north end. Ocean Reef Club Airport, identifier 07FA, has a grooved asphalt runway 05/23 of around 4,400 feet, which is more than a small charter aircraft needs.
It is privately owned and private use, so permission to land is arranged before the date. It is the only paved runway on the island, and the rest of Key Largo is reached from the mainland or by water.
Is there a public airport on Key Largo?
No. The island has no public airport at all. The nearest public general aviation field is Miami Homestead General Aviation Airport, identifier X51, on the mainland, with a paved runway and no landing fees. From X51 it is roughly half an hour by road to the north half of Key Largo. For guests going to the north end itself, the strip on the island is the shorter answer.
When is the best time of year to fly down to Key Largo?
The run works all year and the difference is the water rather than the flying. Winter and spring bring the clearest days over the reef, summer brings warmer water and afternoon build-ups that the crew plans around. On a charter the hour is yours, so an early block in summer usually beats a late one.
How long is the flight from Miami to Key Largo?
It is one of the shortest runs we fly out of the city, a matter of minutes in the air rather than a crossing. The exact block time depends on the aircraft and which field you leave from, and it is confirmed with the boarding time before you book. What actually decides the length of the day is your ground time at both ends, not the flight.
Is it worth flying to Key Largo when you can drive?
It depends on the day you are having. There are two roads onto the island and both start in Florida City, so the drive from Miami runs an hour to an hour and a quarter without traffic and considerably more with it. On a weekend, or with a group leaving from different places, removing that is usually the whole argument.
Where does the small plane land in Key Largo?
At Ocean Reef Club Airport at the top of the island, north of the Card Sound bridge. It is a private-use field, so we arrange the landing permission with your enquiry rather than on the day. Guests going further down the island land at Homestead on the mainland instead and drive in, and we say which of the two fits before anything is booked.
Can you do a day trip to Key Largo by small plane?
Easily, and it is the most common way this run is flown. On a charter the aircraft is held for your block, so the return is set by you rather than by a timetable.
Out in the morning, back in the evening, with the whole middle of the day on the reef. Tell us at the enquiry if you would rather stay a night and the aircraft is planned around that instead.
How much baggage can we take on a small plane?
It is a weight question rather than a bag count. A small aircraft trades payload against passengers and fuel, so four guests with dive tanks and four with overnight bags are different aircraft. Say what is coming at the enquiry, including rods, clubs and anything with a battery in it, and the answer comes back with the quote rather than at the ramp.
Can we fly on to Islamorada, Marathon or Key West afterwards?
Yes, and because the whole chain is domestic there is nothing to clear between legs. The same airframe carries on south down the Keys, so Key Largo works as the first stop of a longer day rather than only a destination. Tell us the shape of the trip at the enquiry and it is quoted as one movement rather than as separate flights.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of the Key Largo flight?
A paved runway tolerates a great deal that a water landing does not, which is the main practical argument for this aircraft in winter. If conditions are genuinely below minimums the crew moves or stands down the flight, and the weather and delays policy says what that means for your booking. That call is the crew's, made against published limits, never a preference.
Is a small plane cheaper than driving to Key Largo?
No, and it is not trying to be. A car is cheaper because you are paying with your morning instead. Charter buys the block: your departure, your return, your party only, your load. On a day trip that usually means two or three more usable hours on the island, and on a group weekend it means everybody arrives at once. That is the comparison worth making.
What do we do once we are there?
That is the island's own question rather than the flight's, and the Key Largo destination page covers it properly. In short: the reef offshore, the state park and the diving it is known for, the sounds on the bay side and the run south into the rest of the Keys. Anything you want arranged before you land is set up with the flight.
Can I bring a pet on a small plane charter?
Yes, pets travel in the cabin with you. The one thing we ask is that you tell us at the enquiry, with the type of animal and its weight, so the seating and the load plan are right from the start.
