The Crossing

Seaplane from Miami to Key Largo by Private Charter

Key Largo is the first island in the Florida Keys and the only quick way to reach it has always been the road, which is exactly the part of the day nobody enjoys. A seaplane from Miami to Key Largo turns that hour on the Overseas Highway into a short flight over open water and sets you down beside Key Largo rather than at the top of it.

The island lies about 50 statute miles from downtown Miami, a little under 44 nautical and almost all of that is water: Biscayne Bay, then Card Sound, then the shallow green of Florida Bay on one side and the reef line on the other. On floats it is roughly sixteen minutes in the air. The aircraft lifts off, turns south and flies it low enough to read the bottom.

It is the simplest crossing we fly from a seaplane base in Miami. Your party brings a bag and turns up at the dock.

What decides the day is the water. Key Largo carries no public runway, only a private one at the north end, so a water landing is not a novelty here, it is the arrival that actually works. This is one of several seaplane routes out of the city and the aircraft is a small plane on floats, eight seats and nine in some configurations.

How It Works

How a Seaplane Miami to Key Largo Actually Works

Key Largo is close enough to drive and far enough that the drive eats the day. There are exactly two roads onto the island and both of them start in Florida City. That is the whole case for flying it.

It is a traffic problem and a runway problem at once, and a seaplane is the one arrival that steps around both. What follows is the whole sequence in order, from the water at the Miami end to the last light on the way home.

Distance and Time

Fifty miles of water in the air against an hour on the only two roads

Downtown Miami to Key Largo is roughly 50 statute miles, a little under 44 nautical and almost all of it is water. On floats that is about sixteen minutes airborne, plus the taxi out and the water landing at the far end. The comparison is the road.

US-1 runs out of Florida City on the Eighteen Mile Stretch and the only alternative is Card Sound Road, which is longer and carries a toll bridge into the north of the island. Without traffic the drive from Miami is an hour to an hour and a quarter. With it there is no second route to switch to.

The Whole Aircraft

The aircraft is chartered whole, so your party flies to Key Largo together and comes home together

The aircraft stays on the island rather than turning around, so six hours ashore means six hours.

Water Landing

The floats land on the water, because the only runway on Key Largo is private

Ocean Reef Club Airport at the north end, OCA and 07FA, is a private-use field with a single runway of about 4,400 feet and it serves the club, its members and their guests. There is no public airport on the island at all. A seaplane needs neither: it comes down on the water and comes alongside. The mechanics sit in the water landing guide.

Leaving Miami

Leaving Miami is a dock and a time rather than a terminal

Names and a headcount are all we need and they go in when you book. There is no hall to walk through, no queue and no gate that closes. You pick from four departure points in Miami and the choice is about your ground time in the city, not about the aircraft.

Arriving in Key Largo

Where the floats come down is agreed for your date, not fixed by a timetable

Key Largo runs eighteen miles from mile marker 107 down to 91, with Blackwater Sound and Buttonwood Sound on the bay side and the reef a few miles off the ocean side.

Where you actually want to step off depends on which end of that you are going to. So the set-down goes in with the enquiry rather than being chosen for you and a party meeting a boat goes straight alongside on a yacht transfer instead of at a pier.

The Way Back

The way back carries one clock and it is the sun

Water landings run from 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset, so a day on floats has a hard end. Nothing else closes, so Key Largo is the one crossing where a late afternoon still works. A return that would arrive after dark lands on a lit runway instead of on water and a departure moved by weather runs under the weather and delays policy.

Departure Points

Departure Points for a Seaplane Miami to Key Largo

A seaplane needs no airport at the Miami end, so the departure point follows your morning rather than the aircraft. Two of these four put you on the water, two on a ramp.

The water departure, on Biscayne Bay just north of downtown. Boarding is from the dock, so nothing between the car and the aircraft looks like an airport. The shortest ground leg for Brickell, downtown and the beach and the usual choice when a yacht is the other half of the day.

How to Charter

How to Charter a Seaplane to Key Largo from Miami

Chartering a seaplane is not booking a seat. There are four steps, and only the first one is yours.

Plan Your Key Largo Charter
  1. 01

    Contact Us

Write to us on WhatsApp or by email. Send your dates, how many guests, where you are coming from and where you want to travel. Tell us the hour you would like to leave. A seaplane lands on water and on runways. Your pickup can be a marina, a hotel dock or a beach, and an airport works just as well.

  2. 02

    Get Aircraft and Prices Back

We check what is free on your date and send the seaplanes that fit. Seats, baggage and flight time for each one. Every aircraft costs a little differently, so we can find the best fit for you.

  3. 03

    Confirm and Pay

You pick the aircraft, and we set the pickup point and the landing site. Then everything around the flight. Catering on board, a car or a golf cart waiting when you land, ground transport to your hotel or back to the airport. Flowers if the day is a special one. You approve it, you pay, and your boarding time, departure point and everything included come back to you.

  4. 04

    Just Arrive 30 Minutes Early

You will have no terminal and no queue. Just make sure you are there 30 minutes before. Then you take off, land right at your destination, and enjoy the day.

On the Island

Where a Miami to Key Largo Seaplane Puts You Down

Key Largo is eighteen miles of island with one highway down the middle, the reef a few miles off the ocean side and the shallow green of Florida Bay on the other. A water landing puts you between the two rather than at the top of the road.

What follows is what parties actually do with the hours in between, in the order they ask for it.

Snorkelling the Coral Reef

Most Asked For
A group of friends standing and floating in shallow clear turquoise water, seen from directly above

Most come for the water first. The only living barrier coral reef in the continental United States lies a few miles off the ocean side, shallow enough in places that a snorkeller sees as much as a diver.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park covers about seventy nautical square miles of it. The park opened in 1963 as the first undersea park in the country, named after a Miami Herald editor who spent the 1950s arguing that a reef could be protected the way a forest is.

Molasses Reef, southeast of the island, is a sanctuary preservation area and one of the most visited stretches of coral in the Upper Keys. Christ of the Abyss stands out on the same trip: a nine foot bronze figure lowered onto Key Largo Dry Rocks in August 1965, in about twenty five feet of water with its raised hands eight to ten feet below the surface.

The park counts over six hundred species of fish and around forty kinds of coral and the figure on the bottom is the third cast taken from the original Italian mould, so divers who have seen one of the others still come to see this one.

In Detail

Seaplane from Miami to Key Largo: Fifty Miles of Water Instead of the Highway

Everything above is the day. What follows is the detail behind it: the crossing, where the floats come down, how far the same aircraft carries on and what charter and private actually change about a flight to the Florida Keys.

Seaplane Miami to Key Largo: Flying Low Over the Reef and the Flats

Room enough and a window each on a Key Largo seaplane

The crossing is not dead time between two airports. A seaplane runs low and slow, so the water under the wing is the first thing the day gives you. The island lies about 50 statute miles from downtown Miami, a little under 44 nautical and almost all of that is water: Biscayne Bay, then Card Sound, then the shallow green of Florida Bay on one side and the reef line on the other. On floats it is roughly sixteen minutes in the air. The reef sits a few miles off the ocean side and the shallow green of Florida Bay begins on the other, so a beach picnic and flats access are the two things guests add most often once they are down. Key Largo carries no public runway, only a private one at the north end, so a water landing is not a novelty here, it is the arrival that actually works. Every seat is a window seat on seaplanes in the fleet of this size, so nobody watches the crossing over someone's shoulder. Other seaplane routes from Miami fly the same way.

Seaplane to Key Largo from Miami: You Decide the Departure Time

Your hour, your names and a seaplane to Key Largo

Nobody hands you a timetable on a charter. The day is built around the hour you name. You name the hour you want to lift off, the hour you want to be standing on Key Largo and which water in the city suits your morning. The aircraft belongs to your party for the day, so all three are your decision rather than a departure somebody else set, and a change the week before is a message to us. If the drive is shorter the other way, the same day runs out of Fort Lauderdale. Half an hour before the lift-off is the whole of the check-in. Your party walks from the car to the aircraft, the bags go on in front of you, and the list for that flight carries your names and nobody else's. Nothing about the morning waits on a stranger. The whole party travels on one booking rather than on a row of seats. And the crossing is a reason in itself. The windows are deep and the aircraft crosses low, so there is room for everybody to sit and watch the water change instead of taking turns at one of them.

Miami to Key Largo Seaplane: Nothing to File, Nothing to Carry

No customs and no check-in desk on a Key Largo charter

A seaplane from Miami to Key Largo stays inside Florida, so there is no border to clear and no paperwork anybody has to file. The flight never leaves the country, so there is no declaration, no port of entry and no passport check at either end. Your party needs photo identification and nothing more. The hold is yours too, so seaplanes in the fleet are matched to the load and a Small Plane on floats carries eight, nine in some configurations. Everything around the flight is settled from our side before your party arrives, from the slot at both ends to the handling on the ramp. A chartered aircraft sits on Key Largo until your party is finished, so six hours ashore is six hours. Your party walks from the car to the aircraft and the bags go on in front of you. What may travel sits in the baggage guidance. A departure moved by weather runs under the weather and delays policy, and a name added or dropped before the flight is a message to us rather than a problem for you.

Seaplane Miami Key Largo: Milestone Days and Florida Weekends

A day trip, a weekend or something to celebrate on Key Largo

A private seaplane from Miami to Key Largo is booked when the day is worth marking: a birthday, a proposal, a graduation, a weekend away with the people who matter. The flight is short enough that the occasion, not the travelling, is what the day is about. That is what a seaplane Miami Key Largo charter is for. There is no terminal to walk through and no queue at either end, so the party stays together from the car to the cabin. The aircraft waits rather than turning around for its next departure, so an afternoon that runs long is simply an afternoon that runs long. Some parties fly over for the day and are home the same evening. Others stay on and book the return for the day they want. Both are the same charter, and the whole group travels together on one booking. If there is something to celebrate, say so when you book: catering, a private chef, premium beverages and flowers travel with you. Everything is in place before you board in Miami.

Questions

Seaplane from Miami to Key Largo: Questions Answered

How long is the seaplane flight from Miami to Key Largo?

About a quarter of an hour in the air. Key Largo lies roughly 50 statute miles from downtown Miami, a little under 44 nautical and almost all of that is water, so on floats it works out at about sixteen minutes airborne.

The exact block time depends on the aircraft and the departure point and it is confirmed with the boarding time before you book. The comparison that matters is the road: an hour to an hour and a quarter without traffic.

How short notice can we book this at?

Shorter than most of what we fly. Names and a headcount are all a domestic charter needs and they go in when you book rather than at the dock, so what decides it is simply what is free on your date. A morning enquiry for an afternoon block is worth making.

Where does a seaplane land in Key Largo?

On the water and the exact spot is agreed for your date rather than fixed by a timetable. Key Largo runs eighteen miles from mile marker 107 down to 91, with Blackwater Sound and Buttonwood Sound on the bay side and the reef line a few miles off the ocean side, so where you want to step off depends entirely on which end of the island your day happens at. Tell us that with the enquiry and it goes into the plan.

Is there an airport on Key Largo?

Not a public one. The only runway on the island is Ocean Reef Club Airport at the north end, OCA and 07FA, a private-use field with a single strip of about 4,400 feet that serves the club, its members and their guests.

Everyone else arrives by road, or by water. That is the reason a seaplane is not a novelty on this route: it is the arrival that actually reaches the island.

Is it faster to fly or to drive from Miami to Key Largo?

There are two roads onto the island and both start in Florida City: the Eighteen Mile Stretch of US-1 and Card Sound Road, which is longer and carries a toll bridge.

Without traffic the drive is an hour to an hour and a quarter and when the Stretch backs up there is no third route to switch to. The flight is about sixteen minutes and it ends beside the water rather than on the highway.

Is this a private charter or a scheduled seat?

A private charter. The aircraft is booked whole rather than sold by the seat, so nobody else is on the manifest, the departure hour is yours and the aircraft waits on the island instead of turning around.

Six hours ashore means six hours. It also means the day is built around your party's plans rather than around a published timetable, which is the whole point of chartering for a distance this short.

How many people can fly to Key Largo on one charter?

The aircraft is chartered whole, so your party travels together on one booking and comes home on the same aircraft. How many seats that is depends on which aircraft flies your date and on the payload once baggage is aboard, so it is confirmed with the quote rather than promised in advance. Send the headcount and say whether children are travelling, because they count as passengers on the weight sheet.

How much luggage can we take to Key Largo and can we bring dive gear?

Tanks, regulators, fins and hard cases travel regularly on this route, within the payload for the aircraft on the day.

The limit is a weight rather than a bag count, which is why bulky equipment is declared when you book rather than weighed at the dock: it comes out of the same payload the passengers do. Say what is coming with the enquiry and the figure for your party stands in the itinerary.

Can the seaplane land at our resort dock, marina or yacht?

Send the coordinates or the name of the dock with the enquiry and the operator answers for that spot. Floats can set a party down alongside a boat rather than at a pier, which is the reason a good number of these flights happen at all and a tender has to be in the water to collect you. On a resort arrival the transfer is part of the flight rather than a taxi ride afterwards.

What happens if the weather stops the Key Largo flight?

Water operations depend on wind and sea state as well as visibility, so a departure can move on a day that looks clear from the beach and summer afternoons move return legs more often than mornings.

The call belongs to the operator rather than the guest and you are told before you book how a moved departure is handled. Because the aircraft carries only your party, a new slot is agreed with you rather than assigned to you.

How late can we fly back from Key Largo on the same day?

A seaplane needs daylight on the water: landings run from 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset. The light is the only clock and that makes it the crossing where a late afternoon still works. A return arriving after dark lands on a lit runway instead of on water.

Can you fly to Key Largo from Fort Lauderdale or West Palm Beach instead?

Yes. Key Largo is reachable from every departure point in the corridor and Miami is simply the closest of them. The right departure point is the one nearest to where you are staying rather than the one nearest to the island, because the ground time in the city is usually longer than the extra minutes in the air. Say where the morning starts and the answer comes back with it already chosen.

Can the seaplane take us on to Islamorada, Marathon or Key West the same day?

Yes. Key Largo is the first island in the chain rather than the last and the same aircraft carries on down it to Islamorada, Marathon and Key West, with the Dry Tortugas beyond. Say so when you send the date, because a second leg changes the timing and sometimes the aircraft. For a yacht or a private dock we pass the coordinates and the pilots decide whether they can put down there.

What does a private seaplane charter from Miami to Key Largo cost?

A charter is priced as a whole aircraft, not per seat, so the number moves with three things: which aircraft flies your date, how many of you there are once bags are aboard and how long the aircraft waits on the island. Tell us those and you get one all-in number, with the departure point, the boarding time and the hours ashore it is based on, before anything is due.

Can I bring a pet on a seaplane charter?

Yes, pets travel in the cabin with you. The one thing we ask is that you tell us at the enquiry, with the type of animal and its weight, so the seating and the load plan are right from the start.
