Most come for the water first. The only living barrier coral reef in the continental United States lies a few miles off the ocean side, shallow enough in places that a snorkeller sees as much as a diver.
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park covers about seventy nautical square miles of it. The park opened in 1963 as the first undersea park in the country, named after a Miami Herald editor who spent the 1950s arguing that a reef could be protected the way a forest is.
Molasses Reef, southeast of the island, is a sanctuary preservation area and one of the most visited stretches of coral in the Upper Keys. Christ of the Abyss stands out on the same trip: a nine foot bronze figure lowered onto Key Largo Dry Rocks in August 1965, in about twenty five feet of water with its raised hands eight to ten feet below the surface.
The park counts over six hundred species of fish and around forty kinds of coral and the figure on the bottom is the third cast taken from the original Italian mould, so divers who have seen one of the others still come to see this one.
The Wrecks
Deeper Water
The other half of the diving reputation sits deeper. The Spiegel Grove, a naval landing ship, was sunk off Key Largo in 2002 as an artificial reef and was at the time the largest vessel ever deliberately put down for that purpose.
She lies in seventy to a hundred and thirty feet, which makes her a certified diver's day rather than a snorkelling stop. Hurricane Dennis rolled her upright in 2005 and she has sat that way since. Gear travels on the aircraft within the payload for the day, so tanks and hard cases are declared with the enquiry rather than at the dock.
That is the practical difference between the two halves of the diving here. The reef is a morning anyone can join. The wreck is a certification, a briefing and a plan, so a party that wants both in one day says so with the date rather than on the dock.

Turn the other way and the water goes shallow and still. Blackwater Sound and Buttonwood Sound sit behind the island and beyond them the mangrove edge of the Everglades. This is the side people miss entirely when they drive down, because the highway keeps the ocean on the left and the bay behind a wall of mangrove.
From the air it is the half of Key Largo that looks like nowhere else in Florida. It is also where the flat water is, which matters on a float aircraft: a bay morning is often the calmer set-down when the ocean side is running a chop.
Everything west of the island is Everglades and Florida Bay, so the run out over it is the same water a skiff would take three hours to cross. From two thousand feet the channels through the mangrove read like a map.

Not everything here is under water. The African Queen, the 1912 steam launch from the Bogart film, is moored at mile marker 100 and still runs canal cruises under her own steam. She has been on the National Register of Historic Places since February 1992, which makes her one of the few boats in the country listed the way a building is.
Mile marker 100 is also the middle of the island's own strip of bars and fish houses and it is the address most guests give when they want a car waiting at the dock.
The cruises run about an hour and a half through the Port Largo canals and out into the sound, which makes them the one thing on this island that costs nothing but time and needs no gear at all. For a party flying in for a single afternoon that is often the point.
