The Chain
Seaplane from Miami to Florida Keys by Private Charter
The Florida Keys are a chain of islands about 125 miles long that starts just south of Miami and ends at Key West.
One road carries all of it: 113 miles of Overseas Highway across 42 bridges, with the green mile markers counting down from 113 at the county line to zero in Key West. A seaplane from Miami to Florida Keys ignores that road and lands on the water beside whichever island the day is about.
Distances from downtown Miami, in a straight line over water: Key Largo is 50 statute miles, Islamorada 65, Marathon 90 and Key West 129. On floats that is about sixteen minutes in the air to the top of the chain and forty two to the bottom of it, plus the taxi out and the water landing at the far end.
The same trip by road is a different day. From Miami International the drive to Key West is about 159 miles and every mile of it is the one road, through every town on the way.
An hour and a half gets you to the Upper Keys when nothing is wrong with US 1. On a winter weekend the far end of the chain is most of a day in each direction.
This is one of several seaplane routes out of Miami and the only region on this coast where the aircraft decides the itinerary rather than the other way round.
The aircraft is a small plane on floats, eight seats and nine in some configurations, chartered whole from a seaplane base in Miami. The same flight leaves from Fort Lauderdale or West Palm Beach, both a little further north of the chain than Miami is.
Plan Your Florida Keys CharterHow It Works
How a Miami to Florida Keys Seaplane Actually Works
The Keys are the one chain where the aircraft is the simple part. What decides a Miami to Florida Keys seaplane day is geography instead.
Monroe County owns two public airports for the entire chain and everything else on it has water on both sides. What follows is the sequence in order, from the water at the Miami end to the light that decides when you come home.
Plan Your Florida Keys CharterDistance and Time
From sixteen minutes in the air to forty two, depending how far down the chain you go
Downtown Miami to Key Largo is about 50 statute miles in a straight line and 43 nautical, which is roughly sixteen minutes on floats.
Islamorada is 65 statute, Marathon 90 and Key West 129, so the far end of the chain is about forty two minutes in the air. Dry Tortugas, seventy miles past Key West, is about an hour. Those are flight times, not door to door times.
The Drive You Are Not Doing
One road, 113 miles of it across 42 bridges, with everybody on it
There is a single road into the Keys and it is the whole reason this route exists. Miami International to Key West is about 159 miles, the Overseas Highway itself is 113 of them across 42 bridges, one of which is the Seven Mile Bridge at Marathon. On a good day the Upper Keys are ninety minutes away. In season the drive is the day.
Two Runways for 125 Miles of Islands
The county owns two public airports for the whole chain, so a runway aircraft has two choices
Monroe County owns Key West International and Florida Keys Marathon International, both certified under Part 139. That is the complete list of public runways in the Keys. Every other island on the chain is reached by road or by water. That is the gap a float aircraft fills. It is why the choice of aircraft here is a real question rather than a preference.
Water Landing
The floats land on the sheltered side, so there is no runway and no drive at the far end
Most of the chain has no airport at all. A seaplane sets down on whichever side is sheltered on the day, Florida Bay and the Gulf to the north west or the Atlantic side to the south east, where the marinas and the docks already are. The mechanics sit in the water landing guide.
Leaving Miami
Leaving Miami is a dock rather than a terminal and the list is names and weights
There is no check in, no gate and no bag drop. What we need before the day is who is travelling and what is coming with them: a float aircraft is payload limited, so passengers, bags and fuel are run through one calculation for your flight. What may travel sits in the baggage guidance.
The Way Back
The way back carries daylight and nothing else
Water landings run only from 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset, so nothing on floats comes home in the dark and the return leg carries a deadline from the moment the date is set.
The window moves through the year, which is why the latest useful departure for your date comes back with the quote rather than as a rule of thumb.
A return that would arrive after dark lands on a lit runway instead of on water and the aircraft is amphibious, so that is a change of landing point rather than a cancelled day. How a moved departure is handled sits in the weather and delays policy.
Departure Points
Departure Points for a Seaplane Miami to Florida Keys
A seaplane Miami to Florida Keys charter needs no airport at the Miami end, so the departure point is chosen for your ground time rather than for the aircraft. These are the four we use.

How to Charter a Seaplane to Florida Keys from Miami
A seaplane to Florida Keys from Miami is chartered, not booked by the seat. Six things happen before anybody reaches the dock and only the first one is yours.

Contact Us
Write to us on WhatsApp or by email. Three things and the aircraft is not one of them: which of the four Miami departure points you leave from, how many guests and from when to when. Name the island as well, because the chain is 125 miles long and Key Largo and Key West are a different day.
If it ends alongside a boat or at a resort dock, say so in the same line: a yacht transfer or a resort transfer is the same flight with a different set-down. Tell us the hour you would like to leave.

We Come Back With the Boarding Time and What the Keys Day Costs
Back comes what we have free on that date, the boarding time at the point you named and what the day costs.
If another of the four saves you ground time we say so and if the honest answer for your party is a runway at Marathon or Key West and a car, or a Small Plane down the chain, we say that too. Neither call is yours to make.
- 03
Names and Weights, Because a Float Aircraft Is Payload Limited
Everyone travelling goes on the passenger list, children and infants included and the operator runs passenger weights, bags and fuel through one calculation. Nothing has to be filed with anybody, but the numbers still decide what can come. Bulky kit is declared here rather than weighed at the dock.
- 04
The Florida Keys Itinerary Is Fixed Before Any Deposit
Before money moves you have the departure point, the boarding time, the aircraft, the hours in the Keys and how a moved departure is handled under the weather and delays policy. The figure for your party stands in the same itinerary and so does the latest departure that still gets you home in daylight.
- 05
Add What Happens on the Ground and on the Water
The flight is the spine, not the whole day. Ground transport at either end, a meet and greet on arrival, catering on board, water toys for the afternoon or a dock pickup if a boat is part of it. Anything not on that list goes to custom requests.
- 06
You Board at the Miami Dock on the Day
No terminal, no gate, no bag drop. Bags go in at the slip and the aircraft taxis out. The operator behind your date is named in operator partners, the standards in safety and compliance. Everything before this step is already agreed, so the morning starts with a boarding time rather than with a queue.
The Islands
Where a Seaplane Miami Florida Keys Charter Puts You Down
The Florida Keys are a chain of islands about 125 miles long, so the question on this route is never whether the aircraft can land. It is which of the islands the day should end at.
The tourism board splits the chain into five areas and past the last of them it carries on for almost seventy more miles to a national park with no road to it. What follows is the chain in order, from the one nearest Miami to the one furthest out.
Plan Your Florida Keys CharterKey Largo and the Upper Keys
Sixteen Minutes OutThe first island on the highway is also the shortest hop from the city. Key Largo lies about 50 statute miles from downtown Miami in a straight line, which is roughly sixteen minutes in the air.
It carries John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. The park was dedicated in 1963 as the first undersea park in the United States and the water it protects runs straight into the national marine sanctuary offshore.
Two more of the chain sit at this end. Tavernier is the southern end of Key Largo, between Key Largo proper and Islamorada. It keeps a small historic centre from the years of the railroad.
Ocean Reef is the private club community at the top of the chain in North Key Largo, with its own marina and its own private airfield. Access there is for members and their guests.
This is the part of the Keys that works as a half day out of Miami. The flight is short enough that a morning on the reef and an evening back in the city fit inside the same daylight window, which is why the Upper Keys are the most asked for end of the chain.
The same leg runs as a seaplane charter from Miami to Key Largo when the day is only about this island.
Islamorada
Sport Fishing CapitalIslamorada is not one island either. Its official name is Islamorada, Village of Islands, because the village takes in six of them: Plantation Key, Windley Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, Lower Matecumbe Key, Indian Key and Lignumvitae Key. It is about 65 statute miles from downtown Miami, so a little over twenty minutes in the air.
It calls itself the Sport Fishing Capital of the World and the water on either side is the reason rather than the slogan.
The shallow backcountry of Florida Bay lies behind the islands and the drop into blue water lies in front of them, both minutes from the same dock. That is why flats fishing and a fishing day by seaplane are the two things parties add most often here.
There is no airport in Islamorada at all, so every arrival on wheels ends with a car on US 1. The water landing puts the party in the middle of the village instead. The dedicated route page is the seaplane charter from Miami to Islamorada.
Marathon and the Middle Keys
Halfway DownMarathon sits at the hinge of the chain, at the north end of the Seven Mile Bridge, about 90 statute miles from Miami and roughly half an hour in the air. It also holds Florida Keys Marathon International, one of only two public airports Monroe County owns for the entire chain.
That makes the Middle Keys the one stretch where a runway aircraft and a float aircraft are both real options, so this is the part of the chain where we most often recommend a small plane instead, usually when the party is large or the baggage is.
Duck Key lies just east of it, a small island of canals and arched bridges that is a resort island rather than a town.
Everything around both of them is water. The Seven Mile Bridge is the piece of the Overseas Highway everybody photographs and it is actually 6.79 miles long. From the air it is the clearest marker of how far down the chain you are. The route page for this stop is the seaplane charter from Miami to Marathon.
Under the old bridge there is an island the highway has no exit for. Pigeon Key is five acres of sand and coral rock in the water beneath the Old Seven Mile Bridge, off Marathon, with no road onto it and no room for an airstrip.
Driving down the chain puts you in Marathon and not on it, which is the whole reason a water landing at the foot of the bridge is worth anything here.
Big Pine and the Lower Keys
The Quiet EndThe Lower Keys are where the chain stops being a line. Big Pine Key is the largest island of this stretch and holds National Key Deer Refuge, established in 1957, which spans 84,351 acres across 25 islands and protects a deer that lives nowhere else in the world.
Sugarloaf Key is the backcountry water between Big Pine and Key West, flats on the bay side and open ocean to the south. It is the last quiet stretch before the end of the road and it is the part of the Keys where the highway matters least, because the useful water is behind the islands rather than beside the road.
This is also where a float aircraft stops being a convenience. The islands here are residential and green rather than resort, the docks are small and the water is shallow, so what the aircraft buys is arriving at the water you actually came for. A sandbar picnic on the bay side is the usual afternoon.
Little Palm Island
No Road At AllLittle Palm Island lies off Little Torch Key in the Lower Keys and no road reaches it. It is accessible only by boat or by air, which is the one case on this chain where the aircraft is not the faster option but the option.
It is about 109 statute miles from downtown Miami, so a little over half an hour in the air. The arrival is a water landing followed by a short transfer rather than a drive and a wait. Parties that come here are usually here for the island itself rather than for the Keys around it.
The same set-down works for a boat instead of a dock, which is what a yacht transfer is: the floats put the party alongside rather than at a pier. The route page for this one is the seaplane charter from Miami to Little Palm Island.
Key West
Mile Marker ZeroKey West is the end of the road: mile marker zero, the southernmost city in the continental United States and about 90 miles north of Cuba. It is 129 statute miles from downtown Miami, which is about forty two minutes in the air against roughly 159 miles of driving.
It is the one town in the chain with scheduled airline service and the busier of the county's two public airports, so it is also the place where a party can start or finish the Keys leg on wheels and do the rest on floats. Most Keys itineraries either begin or end here.
It is the jumping off point for everything further west as well, which is the next tab. A day that ends here is often a Key West escape rather than a transfer. The flight down the chain is half of what people remember about it. Offshore the reef starts before the town ends.
Sand Key is a bar of sand, a reef and a 132 foot iron lighthouse standing in open water about six nautical miles south west of the harbour, between Sand Key Channel and Rock Key Channel.
It is one of the seventeen Sanctuary Preservation Areas in the Keys and covers 286 acres. The only way to spend a day on it is to arrive on the water.
Dry Tortugas National Park
Seventy Miles FurtherThe chain does not end at Key West. It carries on west for almost seventy miles as sand keys and shoals to Dry Tortugas National Park, where Fort Jefferson stands in open water on Garden Key.
The National Park Service states that there are no roads to the park and that the ways in are by boat or by seaplane, which makes it the clearest case in Florida for arriving on floats.
From downtown Miami it is about 185 statute miles, so roughly an hour in the air. Then the last stretch of it is open water with nothing on either side.
What a charter may do inside park water depends on the permission the operator holds. That is the part most pages skip. It is confirmed for your party and your date before anything is booked. The detail sits on the Dry Tortugas page and the leg itself on the seaplane charter from Miami to Dry Tortugas.

Seaplane from Miami to Florida Keys: The Chain, the Reef and a Water Landing
Everything above is the day. What follows is the detail behind it: where the chain starts and ends, what is under the aircraft on the way down, what is arranged with the flight and what chartering the whole aircraft changes about a seaplane charter in the Florida Keys.
Miami to Florida Keys Seaplane: Where the Chain Starts and Ends
The chain is one road and a string of islands, so which island you name changes the day
A Miami to Florida Keys seaplane charter is planned against the chain rather than against a map, because the 125 miles between the first island and the last one are the whole decision. The Keys begin just south of Miami and finish at Key West, mile marker zero and the southernmost city in the continental United States, about 90 miles north of Cuba.
The top of the chain is a short hop: Key Largo is sixteen minutes in the air from downtown Miami and carries John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, dedicated in 1963 as the first undersea park in the United States. Tavernier sits at its southern end and Ocean Reef is the private club community at the top with its own airfield.
Past the road, the chain carries on. Dry Tortugas National Park lies almost 70 miles west of Key West and the National Park Service names boat and seaplane as the ways in, because there are no roads to it. That is the far end of what the same aircraft reaches in a day.
Seaplane Miami to Florida Keys: The Water on Both Sides
Florida Bay on one side, the reef on the other, with the aircraft taking whichever is sheltered
A seaplane Miami to Florida Keys charter is flown low over the one thing the highway cannot show you. It is also the reason the landing has two options on every date. Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary protects 4,539 square miles of water from south of Miami westward to the Dry Tortugas.
It was designated on 16 November 1990 and it holds the only coral barrier reef in North America, together with extensive seagrass beds, mangrove fringed islands and more than 6,000 species of marine life.
Flown at a few hundred feet that water reads like a map: the flats behind the islands, the channels between them and the reef line a few miles off the ocean side. It is the part of a Keys flight guests remember and it is invisible from the road.
It is also operational rather than scenic. The bay side stays workable on mornings when the ocean side is not, so the landing point can move with the wind while the day stays the same. A scenic flight down the chain and a working transfer are the same aircraft on the same water.
Seaplane to Florida Keys from Miami: The Day Is Arranged Around the Flight
Everything either side of the water is part of the same booking
On a seaplane to Florida Keys from Miami the ground is the only thing that can go wrong, so the ground is arranged with the flight.
A car at the Miami end, a meet and greet when you step off, catering on board and a dock pickup if a boat is meeting you: all of it is fixed before the day rather than found on it.
In the Keys the ground half matters more than on most routes, because the islands are long and thin and everything on them is given as a mile marker rather than as a street. Sending the mile marker of where you are staying is usually enough for us to work out which water is closest.
What the party does with the hours is the same list as anywhere on this coast: water toys for the afternoon, ground transport at either end and anything outside that list through custom requests.
Seaplane Flights from Miami to Florida Keys: The Whole Aircraft, Not a Seat On It
Chartered whole means the hours ashore are the ones you asked for
Seaplane flights from Miami to Florida Keys are chartered whole. That is what makes the clock yours rather than a timetable's. The aircraft is arranged around your date and your party, so six hours in the Keys means six hours. It stays with the day rather than turning around.
The return time is set by daylight rather than by a schedule. It also means the day can have more than one stop. The same aircraft that lands at Islamorada in the morning reaches Little Palm Island or Key West in the afternoon, which is what island hopping by seaplane is.
Where a float aircraft is the wrong answer we say so before anything is booked. A small plane takes the two runways in the chain with more baggage and more weather margin, a private jet brings a party in from further north and a helicopter suits a short hop at the top of the chain.
Questions
Seaplane Miami to Florida Keys: Questions Answered
Can you fly a seaplane from Miami to the Florida Keys?
Yes. The chain starts just south of Miami, so it is a short crossing by the standards of this coast: about sixteen minutes in the air to Key Largo and about forty two to Key West.
A seaplane from Miami to Florida Keys is chartered whole rather than sold by the seat, so the date, the aircraft and the island are arranged around your party. Send the date, the number of guests and which island the day should end at and you get back the boarding time and what the day costs.
Which islands in the Keys can a seaplane actually reach?
The ones with sheltered water and a dock, which is most of the chain. Monroe County owns only two public airports for the whole 125 miles, Key West International and Florida Keys Marathon International, so a runway aircraft is limited to those two points.
Little Palm Island off Little Torch Key has no road at all and is reached only by boat or by air. Dry Tortugas National Park, almost 70 miles west of Key West, is reached only by boat or seaplane according to the National Park Service.
How long is the drive from Miami to Key West?
About 159 miles from Miami International Airport down the Overseas Highway: 113 miles of road across 42 bridges, with the green mile markers counting down from 113 at the county line to zero in Key West.
One of those bridges is the Seven Mile Bridge at Marathon, which is actually 6.79 miles long. That single road is the reason the aircraft question comes up on this coast at all.
Where does the seaplane land if there is no airport?
On the water. The Keys have water on both sides for their whole length, Florida Bay and the Gulf to the north west and the Atlantic to the south east.
The aircraft takes whichever side is sheltered on the day, beside the marinas and docks that are already there. The aircraft is amphibious, so a runway at Marathon or Key West stays available when the water does not work.
What is the difference between a seaplane and a small plane into the Keys?
A seaplane lands on water, so the destination can be an island rather than an airport. A small plane lands on a runway, which in the Keys means Marathon or Key West, so it carries more baggage and more weather margin at the price of ending the day at an airport and a car. We recommend one over the other for your date rather than selling the one you asked about.
Can we visit more than one island in a day?
Yes. It is the usual reason parties charter rather than drive. The aircraft stays with the day, so a morning in the Upper Keys and an afternoon further down the chain is one booking. What limits it is daylight: water landings run only from 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset, so the last useful departure comes back with the quote.
How many of us can fly to the Keys on one charter?
The aircraft is chartered whole rather than sold by the seat, so the party travels together and comes home together. A float aircraft is payload limited, so names, weights and what is coming with you are run through one calculation before the date is confirmed.
Can the Florida Keys be combined with the Bahamas?
Yes. It is the same water and the same aircraft families. The sanctuary that protects the Keys reef runs from south of Miami westward to the Dry Tortugas. A trip that takes in both is quoted as one movement, and the Keys leg is usually planned after the crossing rather than before it.
Can I bring a pet on the flight?
Yes, pets travel in the cabin with you. The one thing we ask is that you tell us at the enquiry, with the type of animal and its weight, so the seating and the load plan are right from the start.
