The Archipelago
Seaplane from Miami to Bahamas by Private Charter
The Bahamas are not one destination. The country is some 700 islands and around 2,400 cays spread over hundreds of miles of ocean, of which roughly thirty are inhabited.
The nearest of them sits 56 miles east of Miami and the furthest is closer to Haiti than to Florida. A seaplane from Miami to Bahamas is bought because that spread is the whole problem: the island you want usually has no runway that takes a jet.
Distances from downtown Miami, in a straight line over water: Bimini is 56 statute miles, Freeport 107, Nassau 184 and Marsh Harbour 201. On floats that is about eighteen minutes in the air to the first island, thirty five to Grand Bahama and an hour to Nassau, plus the taxi out and the water landing at the far end.
What makes this a different flight from a domestic one is the border. The Bahamas are a foreign country, so the first landing in the country has to be at an Airport of Entry and customs runs from 09:00 to 17:30.
That single rule shapes most itineraries here: the clearance stop comes first and the island you actually want comes second, on the same aircraft, on the same day.
This is one of several seaplane routes out of Miami and the only region on this coast that crosses a border. The aircraft is a small plane on floats, eight seats and nine in some configurations, chartered whole from a seaplane base in Miami.
The same flight leaves from Fort Lauderdale or West Palm Beach, both a little further north of the crossing than Miami is.
Plan Your Bahamas CharterHow It Works
How a Miami to Bahamas Seaplane Actually Works
A Miami to Bahamas seaplane day has one step a domestic flight does not: the border. It is not difficult, it is just fixed, so it is planned first rather than discovered on the day. What follows is the sequence in order, from the water at the Miami end to the light that decides when you come home.
Plan Your Bahamas CharterDistance and Time
Eighteen minutes to the first island, about an hour to Nassau
Downtown Miami to Bimini is 56 statute miles in a straight line and 49 nautical, roughly eighteen minutes on floats. Freeport is 107 statute and about thirty five minutes, Nassau 184 statute and about an hour, Marsh Harbour 201 and about sixty six minutes. Those are flight times in the air, not door to door times. The clearance stop sits on top of them.
The Border Comes First
The first landing in the country is at an Airport of Entry, with customs from 09:00 to 17:30
The Bahamas require the first landing in the country to be at an Airport of Entry. Customs hours are 09:00 to 17:30. Outside them a commercial charter is not exempt and an overtime fee applies, which is why the clearance airport and the departure time are agreed before the date is confirmed rather than after.
Clear First, Then the Island You Wanted
Most islands have no clearance at all, so the day has two legs
Only some islands can receive an inbound flight from abroad. Staniel Cay for example has no customs and immigration processing at all, so a party bound for the Exumas clears at Andros or North Eleuthera first and then flies on. Andros alone carries three ports of entry, San Andros, Fresh Creek and Congo Town, each with an airfield and a dock.
Water Landing
A water landing site needs written approval, so it is arranged, never assumed
Landing on water anywhere in the country needs the agreement of the Bahamas Civil Aviation Authority, and per site. That is the difference between a seaplane in Florida and a seaplane here: the aircraft can put down beside the island, the permission is the part that has to exist first. The mechanics sit in the water landing guide.
Leaving Miami
Leaving Miami is a dock rather than a terminal, with a list of names, passports and weights
There is no check in, no gate and no bag drop. What we need before the day is who is travelling, their travel documents and what is coming with them: a float aircraft is payload limited, so passengers, bags and fuel are run through one calculation. What papers each passenger needs sits in travel documents, what may travel in the baggage guidance.
The Way Back
The way back carries daylight and a second border
Water landings run only from 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset, so nothing on floats comes home in the dark and the return leg carries a deadline from the moment the date is set.
The window moves through the year, which is why the latest useful departure for your date comes back with the quote rather than as a rule of thumb.
The United States side is cleared on arrival as well, so the return has its own fixed point. A return that would arrive after dark lands on a lit runway instead of on water and the aircraft is amphibious, so that is a change of landing point rather than a cancelled day. How a moved departure is handled sits in the weather and delays policy.
Departure Points
Departure Points for a Seaplane Miami to Bahamas
A seaplane Miami to Bahamas charter needs no airport at the Miami end, so the departure point is chosen for your ground time rather than for the aircraft. These are the four we use.

Write to us on WhatsApp or by email. Three things and the aircraft is not one of them: which of the four Miami departure points you leave from, how many guests and from when to when. Name the island as well, because Bimini and the Exumas are a different day and a different clearance.
If it ends alongside a boat or at a resort dock, say so in the same line: a yacht transfer or a resort transfer is the same flight with a different set-down. Tell us the hour you would like to leave.

We Come Back With the Boarding Time, the Clearance Stop and What the Day Costs
Back comes what we have free on that date, the boarding time at the point you named, where the flight clears customs and what the day costs. If the honest answer for your party is a runway and a transfer, or a Small Plane across the same water, we say that too. Neither call is yours to make.
- 03
Names, Passports and Weights
Everyone travelling goes on the passenger list, children and infants included, with the travel document each of them holds. The operator runs passenger weights, bags and fuel through one calculation and the crossing is filed with both governments. Bulky kit is declared here rather than weighed at the dock.
- 04
The Bahamas Itinerary Is Fixed Before Any Deposit
Before money moves you have the departure point, the boarding time, the clearance airport, the aircraft, the hours in the islands and how a moved departure is handled under the weather and delays policy. The figure for your party stands in the same itinerary and so does the latest departure that still gets you home in daylight.
- 05
Add What Happens on the Ground and on the Water
The flight is the spine, not the whole day. Ground transport at either end, a meet and greet on arrival, catering on board, water toys for the afternoon or a dock pickup if a boat is part of it. Anything not on that list goes to custom requests.
- 06
You Board at the Miami Dock on the Day
No terminal, no gate, no bag drop. Bags go in at the slip and the aircraft taxis out. The operator behind your date is named in operator partners, the standards in safety and compliance. Everything before this step is already agreed, so the morning starts with a boarding time rather than with a queue.
The Islands
Where a Seaplane Miami Bahamas Charter Puts You Down
The Bahamas are some 700 islands and around 2,400 cays, of which about thirty are inhabited. The question on this route is never whether the aircraft can get there. It is which island the day should end at.
What follows is the country in order, from the one 56 miles off Miami to the ones that sit closer to the Caribbean than to Florida. Each of them changes the clearance stop as well as the flight time.
Plan Your Bahamas CharterBimini and the Berry Islands
Eighteen Minutes OutBimini is the closest Bahamian island to Florida, 56 statute miles from downtown Miami, which is about eighteen minutes in the air. That single number is why a Bahamas day trip exists at all: the Gulf Stream crossing is over before most people have settled.
South Bimini sits across the harbour from it and Cat Cay a few miles further down the chain. All three are shallow water on one side and the drop into the Stream on the other, which is the reason the fishing here is what it is.
South east of them the Berry Islands break the run to Nassau. Chub Cay sits at the southern end, about forty eight minutes from Miami, and Great Harbour Cay at the northern. Both are marina islands with more boats than buildings.
Between and around the two chains lie the cays nobody lives on. Gun Cay is a narrow cay 57 statute miles out, a shallow bay at the north end, a lighthouse at the south end and a working boat passage in between.
The Berry Islands run about forty miles from end to end with the two settled islands at the ends of them and water, sand and rock in everything between.
South west of the whole run Cay Sal is a ring of cays around a shallow lagoon 143 miles from Miami, with deep channels falling away on three sides, nobody living on it and nothing built on it.
Grand Bahama and Freeport
Thirty Five Minutes OutGrand Bahama is the northernmost of the big islands, 107 statute miles from downtown Miami and about thirty five minutes in the air. It is the shortest crossing to an island with a town on it. Freeport is that town. It carries the harbour, the shops and the ground transport, so a day here needs less arranging than a day on a cay.
It is a port of entry, which means the clearance stop and the destination are the same place. That is the practical argument for Grand Bahama over the smaller islands on a short trip: one landing, one set of formalities and the rest of the day is yours.
East along the shore the town runs out at Gold Rock, 125 statute miles from Miami and some 25 miles from Freeport by road. There is a beach, a national park behind it and no town at all, which is why parties ask for this end of the island rather than the hotel strip.
Nassau and Paradise Island
About an Hour OutNassau is the capital, on New Providence, 184 statute miles from downtown Miami and about an hour in the air. It is the busiest arrival in the country and the one place where everything a party might need is within a few minutes of the water.
Paradise Island lies across the harbour, joined to the capital by two road bridges and carrying Atlantis with its water park and aquarium. Baha Mar sits on the Cable Beach side of New Providence and Blue Lagoon Island a short boat ride offshore.
Lyford Cay is the private gated community at the western tip of New Providence and Rose Island the narrow island a few miles east of the harbour, reached by boat and used as a beach day out of the capital.
For a first visit this is usually the recommendation, because the clearance, the beach and the ground transport are all in one place. The dedicated route page is the seaplane charter from Miami to Nassau.
The small cays around the capital are the part a float aircraft changes most, because not one of them has a runway. Athol Island is two miles of sand and scrub with nobody on it, three quarters of a mile east of Paradise Island.
Pearl Island is a third of a mile long with two beaches, a lighthouse and a reef fifty feet offshore, Salt Cay is small enough to walk end to end and Sun Cay is a private island with three beaches and nothing beyond the treeline.
The Abacos
The Cays with HarboursThe Abacos are an arc of cays in the north east, about sixty six minutes from Miami. Marsh Harbour is the main town and a port of entry, so it is usually both the clearance stop and the base for the rest. The cays are the point of coming here.
Elbow Cay carries Hope Town and its candy striped lighthouse, Green Turtle Cay and Great Guana Cay sit further along the arc and Treasure Cay holds the long beach on the mainland side. Sandy Point is the southernmost settlement on Great Abaco, a fishing village at the far end of the island.
This is sheltered water almost the whole way, the Sea of Abaco between the cays and the main island, which is why a float aircraft works here on days when the open ocean does not. The route page is the seaplane charter from Miami to the Abacos.
The arc holds more than the names above and most of it has no ferry. Man-O-War Cay is two and a half miles long and in places under a hundred metres wide, harbour on one side and open Atlantic on the other.
Tilloo Cay is long, narrow and almost entirely undeveloped, Scotland Cay private and residential from end to end and Manjack Cay a mile of beach, bush and mangrove with no road and no settlement on it. Montage Cay is a private island off Marsh Harbour with no bridge onto it.
At the two ends of the arc the distances change. Moore's Island sits in the middle of the Bight of Abaco, seven miles of low green land 168 statute miles from Miami. Walker's Cay is the northern tip of the whole country, a hundred acres at 151 miles with a marina at one end and its own barrier reef around the outside.
Eleuthera and Harbour Island
Pink Sand and a Port of EntryEleuthera is a hundred miles long and rarely more than a mile or two wide, about seventy two minutes from Miami at its northern end. North Eleuthera is the port of entry and the gateway to the two islands beside it.
Harbour Island is the reason most parties come: three miles of pink sand beach and a settlement you cross on a golf cart. Spanish Wells sits off the other side of the northern tip and Governor's Harbour halfway down the long island.
The geography is the whole argument for arriving by air here. Both of the small islands are reached from North Eleuthera by boat, so the aircraft removes the drive that a runway arrival further south would add. The route page is the seaplane charter from Miami to Eleuthera.
Two more islands sit off the same stretch and both are reached from the water. Royal Island is 430 acres of private ground with a harbour cut into its south side, west of Russell Island and Spanish Wells. Little San Salvador lies further south, four square miles of low scrub, sand and a brackish lagoon of which 98 percent has never been built on.
The Exumas
The Cay ChainThe Exumas are the long chain of cays that runs south east from Nassau, about an hour and a half from Miami. Measured across the pages of the operators who sell this corridor, this is the single most written about part of the Bahamas.
Staniel Cay is the centre of it: the swimming pigs at Big Major Cay, the Thunderball Grotto and the nurse sharks a few minutes away at Compass Cay. Norman's Cay lies at the northern end with its wreck in shallow water, Black Point halfway down and George Town on Great Exuma at the southern end.
It is also the clearest case for a seaplane in the whole country. Staniel Cay has no customs and immigration processing at all, so a party coming from Miami clears at Andros or North Eleuthera first and flies on. The route page is the seaplane charter from Miami to Exuma.
Most of the chain has no settlement on it at all, which is what the floats are for. Shroud Cay at the northern end is not one island but a scatter of cays held together by tidal creeks with no building of any kind on them.
Pipe Cay and Little Pipe Cay sit in Pipe Creek, a maze of small cays and sandbars with deep cuts running through it.
South of Staniel Bitter Guana Cay carries a colony of Bahamian rock iguanas under its pale cliffs, Farmer's Cay is small enough to walk across and lived in all year and Sandy Cay is a low, empty cay at the bottom of the chain.
At the southern end the cays run into an island with a town on it. Great Exuma is 37 miles long with George Town about two thirds of the way down it, 318 statute miles from Miami.
Stocking Island lies across the mouth of Elizabeth Harbour a mile off the town, three miles of dune and sand with no road, no car and no airstrip on it. Moriah Harbour Cay is a national park in the water between Great Exuma and Little Exuma.
Andros
The Largest IslandAndros is the largest island in the Bahamas and about fifty five minutes from Miami, yet it carries a fraction of the visitors of Nassau. West of it the water shallows into flats that run for miles, east of it the wall drops into the Tongue of the Ocean.
It is the clearance island for a good part of the country. Andros alone carries three ports of entry, San Andros, Fresh Creek and Congo Town, each with an airfield and a dock, which is why so many Exuma itineraries touch here first. Kamalame Cay sits off its eastern shore.
Mangrove Cay sits between two tidal channels in the middle of the island, with one road running from Moxey Town in the north east past the airstrip to Lisbon Creek at the southern end. The water arrival puts a party on that road rather than at the end of a transfer.
For anglers this is the destination rather than the stop: the bonefish flats are the reason people book the whole aircraft and bring rods. The route page is the seaplane charter from Miami to Andros.
The Southern Out Islands
A Longer LegPast the Exumas the country keeps going for hundreds of miles and the arithmetic changes. Cat Island and Long Island sit around 315 and 367 statute miles from Miami, San Salvador 374 and Great Inagua over 500.
At those distances the aircraft is a decision rather than an assumption, so we work it out for your date and your party instead of printing a flight time. Sometimes the honest answer is a small plane or a private jet into the nearest runway with a short leg after it.
What these islands buy is emptiness. Rum Cay has a settlement of a few dozen people. A beach here is routinely a beach with nobody on it. Parties come for exactly that, and they plan the day around the crossing rather than the other way round.
Further out again the settlements thin to almost nothing. Acklins and Crooked Island face each other across the bight with their settlements along the inner shores, which is where a water landing puts the party.
Mayaguana is 110 square miles with about two hundred people on it in three settlements, Flamingo Cay is two miles of rock and sand with nobody on it at all and Ragged Island sits 374 statute miles out at the bottom of a chain of more than a hundred cays, with forty four people counted at the 2022 census.

In Detail
Seaplane from Miami to Bahamas: The Gulf Stream, the Banks and Two Borders
Everything above is the day. What follows is the detail behind it: where the archipelago starts and ends, what the crossing passes over, how the two borders are handled and what chartering the whole aircraft changes about a seaplane charter to the Bahamas.
Miami to Bahamas Seaplane: Where the Archipelago Starts and Ends
The nearest island is eighteen minutes out, the furthest is closer to Haiti
A Miami to Bahamas seaplane charter is planned against the archipelago rather than against a single island, because the spread between the first island and the last one is most of the decision. Bimini is 56 statute miles from downtown Miami, so the Gulf Stream crossing is over before most people have settled.
It is the reason a Bahamas day trip is possible at all. From there the country runs south east for hundreds of miles: Nassau at about an hour, the Abacos and Eleuthera a little beyond it, the Exumas at about an hour and a half.
Past those the southern islands are a different question again. Cat Island, Long Island and San Salvador sit far enough out that the aircraft is decided per date rather than assumed, and that is a conversation before a booking rather than a line on a page.
Seaplane Miami to Bahamas: What the Crossing Passes Over
Deep blue for twenty minutes, then a bank you can read the bottom of
A seaplane Miami to Bahamas charter is flown low. The water between Florida and the islands is the reason people remember the flight rather than the arrival. The first stretch is the Gulf Stream, deep water and a hard colour line where it ends.
Then the Great Bahama Bank begins and the water goes from blue to a pale green that carries on to the horizon. The bank is shallow for tens of miles at a stretch, so from a few hundred feet the bottom, the sandbars and the channels are all visible. It is the part a runway aircraft at altitude never shows you.
It is operational as well as scenic. Sheltered water on the bank side and open ocean on the other means the landing point can move with the wind while the day stays the same, which is why a scenic flight and a working transfer are the same aircraft on the same water.
Seaplane to Bahamas from Miami: Two Borders, Arranged With the Flight
The clearance stop is part of the itinerary, not a surprise on the day
A seaplane to Bahamas from Miami crosses two borders in a day, so the paperwork is the part that gets planned first. It is routine, it is just not optional.
The inbound side is fixed: the first landing in the country is at an Airport of Entry, customs runs 09:00 to 17:30 and a charter with a paid crew is not exempt outside those hours.
Which airport that is depends on where you are going. A party for the Exumas usually clears at Andros or North Eleuthera, one for the Abacos at Marsh Harbour. It is chosen for your island and your hours, not for convenience.
Everything either side of the water is booked with the flight: ground transport, a meet and greet on arrival, catering on board and a dock pickup if a boat is meeting you.
Seaplane Flights from Miami to Bahamas: The Whole Aircraft, Not a Seat On It
Chartered whole means the islands can be more than one
Seaplane flights from Miami to Bahamas are chartered whole. That is what makes the clock yours rather than a timetable's. The aircraft is arranged around your date and your party, so six hours in the islands means six hours. It stays with the day rather than turning around.
The return time is set by daylight rather than by a schedule. It also means the day can have more than one stop. The same aircraft that clears at Andros reaches Staniel Cay or Harbour Island in the afternoon, which is what island hopping by seaplane is.
Where a float aircraft is the wrong answer we say so before anything is booked. A small plane takes the runways with more baggage and more weather margin, a private jet brings a party in from further north and a helicopter suits a short hop once you are in the islands.
Questions
Seaplane Miami to Bahamas: Questions Answered
Can you fly a seaplane from Miami to the Bahamas?
Yes. Bimini is 56 statute miles from downtown Miami, roughly eighteen minutes in the air. Nassau is about an hour.
A seaplane from Miami to Bahamas is chartered whole rather than sold by the seat, so the date, the aircraft and the island are arranged around your party. What is fixed is the border: the first landing in the country has to be at an Airport of Entry.
Do we clear customs and where does that happen?
Yes, on both sides. The Bahamas require the first landing in the country to be at an Airport of Entry and customs hours are 09:00 to 17:30.
A charter with a paid crew is not exempt outside those hours, so the clearance airport and the departure time are agreed before the date is confirmed. Which airport it is depends on your island: Andros alone carries three ports of entry, San Andros, Fresh Creek and Congo Town.
Can the seaplane land at any island?
Not automatically. Landing on water anywhere in the country needs the written agreement of the Bahamas Civil Aviation Authority, per site.
On top of that many islands have no customs at all: Staniel Cay for example has no clearance processing, so a party for the Exumas clears elsewhere first and flies on. We confirm the landing point for your party and your date before anything is booked.
How far are the Bahamas from Miami?
The nearest island is 56 statute miles from downtown Miami in a straight line. Freeport is 107, Nassau 184 and Marsh Harbour 201. The country then carries on south east for hundreds of miles, which is why the island you name changes the aircraft as well as the day.
What is the difference between a seaplane and a small plane to the Bahamas?
A seaplane lands on water, so the destination can be an island rather than an airport, subject to the landing permission for that site.
A small plane lands on a runway and carries more baggage and more weather margin, at the price of ending the day at an airport and a transfer. We recommend one over the other for your date rather than selling the one you asked about.
Can we do the Bahamas as a day trip?
To the near islands, yes. It is the most common booking on this route. Bimini is eighteen minutes out and Grand Bahama about thirty five. What sets the end of the day is daylight: water landings run only from 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset, so the last useful departure comes back with the quote.
Which islands can we combine in one day?
As many as daylight and the clearance stop allow. The aircraft stays with the day, so clearing at Andros in the morning and finishing at Staniel Cay or Harbour Island in the afternoon is one booking rather than two. The southern islands, Cat Island, Long Island and San Salvador, are a longer leg and the aircraft for them is decided per date.
Can the Bahamas be combined with the Florida Keys?
Yes. It is the same aircraft family and the same water. A party coming the other way from the Bahamas clears customs on the Florida side first, so the Keys leg is usually planned after the crossing rather than before it. The Florida Keys page covers that side of the desk.
Can I bring a pet on the flight?
Yes, pets travel in the cabin with you. The one thing we ask is that you tell us at the enquiry, with the type of animal and its weight, so the seating and the load plan are right from the start.
