Small Plane Flights from Miami to Sand Key

The strip runs east to west across the island, 5,076 feet of asphalt with water at both ends. It is the only runway in the lower Keys and it is a generous one for a small plane, which needs a fraction of it.

You come off at a general aviation ramp rather than through a terminal. There is no queue, no gate and no baggage belt, and because this is a Florida run there is no desk to clear either. From the aircraft to a waiting car is a walk of a minute or two.

That is the whole reason the day works. An airport gives you a fixed point with fuel, shelter and a car, and it is unbothered by the kind of morning that would make six miles of open water unpleasant. Say at the enquiry roughly when you want to be back and the aircraft simply waits.

The lighthouse stands between Sand Key Channel and Rock Key Channel with open water all around it. It is not a tower on a headland, it is an iron skeleton on legs, first lit in 1853 and built to let storm surge pass straight through it. Its predecessor did not have that trick.

A brick tower went up in 1827 and the hurricane of 1846 took the tower, the keeper's house and the island itself. The replacement carried the first Fresnel lens of its order in Florida, survived a fire during renovation in 1989, was restored by 1998 and was sold at federal auction in November 2020 for 83,000 dollars.

The sand around it is the part that keeps moving. Early Spanish charts called it Cayos Arena, the sand keys, and the bank still changes shape after every serious blow, so nobody has ever tried to put anything permanent on it.

This is what people actually come out for. The reef is a classic lower Keys spur and groove: ridges of coral running seaward in five to twenty feet of water with channels of white sand between them, so the whole thing reads like a set of fingers from above.

Much of it sits shallow enough that snorkellers and divers are looking at the same coral heads, which is unusual and is the reason mixed parties work here. The south side slopes away to a ledge at about sixty-five feet and drops further in places, so there is a deeper dive on the same mooring.

Visibility is the variable. It runs anywhere from about fifteen feet to over a hundred depending on wind, swell and the state of the tide, which is the single strongest argument for taking the morning aircraft out of Miami rather than the afternoon one.

The last leg is water and it is arranged with the flight. A car runs you from the apron to the dock and the boat takes it from there, southwest past the harbour and out to the light.

Which hull is right depends entirely on what you want in the water, so that is the question we ask at the enquiry rather than on the morning. A snorkel party, a dive party and a group who simply want to run out, look at the tower and come back are three different boats and three different lengths of day.

Moorings are free and nobody can book one. The sanctuary keeps buoys on a first-come basis precisely so that boats do not anchor on coral, and anchoring is prohibited outright when a buoy is available. In practice that means an early start beats a reservation, and it is the captain who manages it, not you.

Sand Key is the best known of a short row of reefs off Key West and it is not the only one worth a mooring. Rock Key sits immediately to the east and Eastern Dry Rocks beyond it, both shallow, both protected in the same way. That matters on a day when the wind is wrong for one of them.

A captain who has three sites within a few miles of each other can simply move rather than call the day off, which is a resilience a single destination does not have. Tell us the shape of the afternoon and the boat is chosen with that in mind.

Not everybody in a party wants to get in the water, and the town is a genuine alternative rather than a consolation. The old harbour, the streets behind Duval and the sunset at the western end are all within a short ride of the airport.

This is where wheels beat floats. Loading a land aircraft is a weight question rather than a shape question, so tanks, weight belts, camera housings and a cooler are a conversation about payload instead of a problem.

Key West is not the end of the chain. The same airframe carries on west to the Dry Tortugas, which is the other thing worth flying to out of this airport and is far enough that a boat makes a whole day of it.

Going the other way, the run back up the Keys passes Little Palm Island, Big Pine Key, Marathon, Islamorada and Key Largo, any of which can be a stop on the way home rather than a separate trip. That is the argument for island hopping on a charter: the aircraft is already yours for the block.
