The Run Down

Small Plane Flights to Big Pine Key from Miami

Big Pine Key sits at mile marker thirty in the Lower Keys and has no airfield of its own. The nearest paved runway is Marathon, twenty-one miles back up the Overseas Highway, and that is where a wheeled charter puts you down.

The strip at Marathon runs 07/25 and measures 5,008 feet of asphalt, which is a great deal more than a small aircraft needs. From the apron the last leg is a single road: US-1 west over Seven Mile Bridge and Bahia Honda, thirty minutes or so with the water on both sides of the car.

Everything between the two ends is ours: the departure point in Miami, the aircraft and the crew, and the ground transport waiting on the ramp when you land. Your party brings a bag.

Driving the whole way is the alternative and it costs about three hours each direction from Miami. This is one of several small plane routes down the Keys. Guests who would rather skip the road entirely set down on the water instead, which is a different aircraft on the seaplane page.

How It Works

How a Small Plane Charter Miami to Big Pine Key Actually Works

Both ends of this trip are in Florida, and the day is as short as that makes it sound. What is left is a short flight and a short drive, and we arrange both of them.

The shape of it: you leave a general aviation ramp in Miami, you land at Marathon, and a car or a cart is waiting to take you the last twenty-one miles west.

The Runway

The runway at Marathon is the closest hard surface to Big Pine Key

The strip runs 07/25 and measures 5,008 feet of asphalt at a general aviation field with no scheduled traffic on it. It is the only paved runway between Key Largo and Key West, which is what makes it the arrival point for the whole of the Lower Keys. The Marathon route page covers the town itself.

The Last Leg

The drive from the apron is the part that gets you to Big Pine Key

There is one road and it runs the length of the Keys, so the drive west from the apron is impossible to get wrong. It takes about half an hour and it crosses Seven Mile Bridge and Bahia Honda on the way, which is the prettiest thirty minutes of highway in the state. We book the ground transport so that it is standing there rather than ordered on arrival.

Leaving Miami

Leaving Miami for Big Pine Key skips the terminal entirely

You arrive at the departure point close to the boarding time rather than two hours before it. There is no check-in desk, no security queue and no gate, because the aircraft is yours and the ramp is a car park with an aeroplane on it. The flight plan is filed by the crew and nothing about it is your paperwork.

The Alternative

A seaplane reaches Big Pine Key without the drive at all

Because the island has no strip, the only way to land on Big Pine Key itself is on the water. That trip is flown by seaplane and it trades the runway for a water state that has to cooperate. We quote the two against each other rather than selling one, because which is right depends on the date, the conditions and what the party is carrying.

Weather

Weather closes water long before it closes the runway on the way to Big Pine Key

A rough morning can rule out a water landing while a paved strip is entirely unbothered by it. That is the practical argument for wheels on this run in winter, and it is the reason both aircraft are quoted. What flies on the day is a crew decision, taken against published minimums, never a preference.

The Block

The small plane waits, which is what makes Big Pine Key a day trip

On a charter the airframe is held for your block, so the return is set by you rather than by a timetable. Guests who want a night in the Lower Keys say so at the enquiry and the crew and the aircraft are planned around it. Nothing about the day is shared with anybody else's schedule.

Departure Points

Departure Points for a Small Plane Miami to Big Pine Key

A small plane uses short fields that a jet cannot, so the departure point is chosen for your ground time. These are the four we use around Miami. Select one to see exactly where it sits.

Miami Executive

Miami Executive Airport, TMB, Kendall

Kendall-Tamiami in the south west of the county and the field both small planes sit at, the land aircraft and the amphibian. A charter that starts here starts without a positioning leg, which is what decides an early morning on a same day return. It is also the shortest drive from the south and west of the county.

How to Charter

Charter a Small Plane from Miami to Big Pine Key

Chartering an aircraft is not booking a seat. There are four steps, and only the first one is yours.

Plan Your Big Pine Key Charter
  1. 01

    Contact Us

Write to us on WhatsApp or by email. Send your dates, how many guests, where you are coming from and where you want to travel. Tell us the hour you would like to leave.

A small plane runs airport to airport, so say if you want the car onward to a house, a marina or a hotel. With a seaplane the pickup and the landing can be the water itself.

  2. 02

    Get Aircraft and Prices Back

We check what is free on your date and send the small planes that fit. Seats, baggage and flight time for each one. Every aircraft costs a little differently, so we can find the best fit for you.

  3. 03

    Confirm and Pay

You pick the aircraft, and we set the pickup point and the landing site. Then everything around the flight. Catering on board, a car or a golf cart waiting at Marathon, ground transport down to the house or back to the airport. Flowers if the day is a special one. You approve it, you pay, and your boarding time, departure point and everything included come back to you.

  4. 04

    Just Arrive 30 Minutes Early

You will have no terminal and no queue. Just make sure you are there 30 minutes before. Then you take off, land at Marathon, and the car is already there.

In the Lower Keys

Where a Miami to Big Pine Key Small Plane Puts You Down

The aircraft puts you on the apron at Marathon, the closest paved runway to Big Pine Key and twenty-one miles east of it. Everything below is reached from there, and the first step of every day is the same half-hour west on US-1.

What follows is what parties actually do with the hours in between, and where the runway sits in relation to each of them.

The Marathon Runway and the Apron

Where You Land
A single engine small plane on wheels in flight over a reef line and a built up stretch of coast

The strip runs 07/25 across Vaca Key, 5,008 feet of asphalt with water at both ends. It is a general aviation field, so the building beside it is one storey and the walk from the aircraft to the car is measured in steps rather than in corridors.

It is the only paved runway between Key Largo and Key West, so every wheeled charter into the Lower Keys arrives here. There is nothing to clear and nothing to collect: both ends of this trip are in Florida, so you get out and go.

Marathon itself is a place rather than a transit point and it has its own route page and its own destination page. For a trip to Big Pine Key it is the apron and the first mile of road.

In Detail

Small Plane Flights from Miami to Big Pine Key: The Runway, the Overseas Highway and the Key Deer

Everything above is the day. What follows is the detail behind it: the strip at Marathon, the twenty-one miles of highway after it, what the flight itself looks like, and the refuge that most people come down for on a trip through the Florida Keys.

Miami to Big Pine Key by Small Plane: Flying Low Over the Reef and the Flats

A window each on a Miami to Big Pine Key small plane

The crossing is not dead time between two airports. A small plane crosses low enough to see what is under it, so the water is part of the day rather than something to sit through. Downtown Miami to Big Pine Key is roughly 105 statute miles, just over 91 nautical and almost every mile of it is water. The chain unrolls under the wing as a single thin line of road and bridge with pale banks on the Gulf side and a darker blue falling away on the Atlantic side, and you can see the bottom through most of it. Three of the four sit well inside the county, which is the part that decides how early the morning starts: a field twenty minutes from the house is worth more than five minutes of flight time saved in the air. Where the wheels touch down decides the shape of the day more than the flight time does. Every seat is a window seat on an aircraft this size, and the same is true of scenic flights of this size, so nobody watches the crossing over someone's shoulder. Other small plane routes from Miami fly the same way.

Small Plane to Big Pine Key from Miami: You Decide the Departure Time

Your hour, your names and a small plane to Big Pine Key

Nobody hands you a timetable on a charter. The day is built around the hour you name. You name the hour you want to lift off, the hour you want to be standing on Big Pine Key and which water in the city suits your morning. The aircraft belongs to your party for the day, so all three are your decision rather than a departure somebody else set, and a change the week before is a message to us. If the drive is shorter the other way, the same day runs out of Fort Lauderdale. Half an hour before the lift-off is the whole of the check-in. Your party walks from the car to the aircraft, the bags go on in front of you, and the list for that flight carries your names and nobody else's. Nothing about the morning waits on a stranger. Driving the whole way is the alternative and it costs about three hours each direction from Miami. And the crossing is a reason in itself. The windows are deep and the aircraft crosses low, so there is room for everybody to sit and watch the water change instead of taking turns at one of them.

Small Plane Charter to Big Pine Key from Miami: Nothing to File, Nothing to Carry

No customs and no check-in desk on a Big Pine Key charter

A small plane from Miami to Big Pine Key stays inside Florida, so there is no border to clear and no paperwork anybody has to file. The flight never leaves the country, so there is no declaration, no port of entry and no passport check at either end. Your party needs photo identification and nothing more. Everything around the flight is settled from our side before your party arrives, from the slot at both ends to the handling on the ramp. Your party walks from the car to the aircraft and the bags go on in front of you. The crew files the flight plan and that is the whole of the paperwork. The same aircraft is there for the return, so nothing is checked in, claimed or checked in again on the way home. What may travel sits in the baggage guidance. A departure moved by weather runs under the weather and delays policy, and a name added or dropped before the flight is a message to us rather than a problem for you.

Small Plane Charter Miami to Big Pine Key: Milestone Days and Florida Weekends

A day trip, a weekend or a celebration on Big Pine Key

A private small plane from Miami to Big Pine Key is booked when the day is worth marking: a birthday, a proposal, a graduation, a weekend away with the people who matter. The flight is short enough that the occasion, not the travelling, is what the day is about. That is what a small plane charter Miami to Big Pine Key is for. Three of the four sit well inside the county, which is the part that decides how early the morning starts: a field twenty minutes from the house is worth more than five minutes of flight time saved in the air. Most people who fly here are marking something, and the date comes first. Some parties fly over for the day and are home the same evening. Others stay on and book the return for the day they want. Both are the same charter, and the whole group travels together on one booking. If there is something to celebrate, say so when you book: catering, a private chef, premium beverages and flowers travel with you. Everything is in place before you board in Miami.

Questions

Small Plane Charter Miami to Big Pine Key: Questions Answered

Is there an airport on Big Pine Key?

No. Big Pine Key has no airfield of any kind, which is the single fact that shapes this route. The nearest paved runway is Florida Keys Marathon International, twenty-one miles east on US-1, and after that Key West International, twenty-eight miles west. A wheeled charter from Miami lands at Marathon and the last leg is a half-hour drive that we arrange with the flight.

Which airport does a small plane use for Big Pine Key?

Marathon, identifier MTH. It is a general aviation field with a single asphalt runway of 5,008 feet running 07/25 and no scheduled airline traffic on it, which is why a small charter aircraft is at home there. It is also the only paved strip between Key Largo and Key West, so it is the arrival point for the whole of the Lower Keys rather than for Marathon alone.

How long is the flight from Miami to Big Pine Key?

Miami to Marathon is about ninety statute miles, which is well under an hour in the air on this type. The exact block time depends on the aircraft and which field you leave from and it is confirmed with the boarding time before you book. Add roughly half an hour for the drive west from the apron. Driving the whole way instead takes about three hours each direction.

What do we need to bring to fly to Big Pine Key?

Photo identification for each adult, and that is the whole of it. Both ends of this trip are in Florida, so the day stays as simple as it sounds. The crew files the flight plan and there is nothing on your side to hand over before you fly.

Can we bring dive tanks, rods and coolers on a small plane?

Usually yes, and this is where wheels earn their keep. Load on a small aircraft is a weight question rather than a bag count, and a wheeled airframe has more of it to give than floats do.

Tanks, rods, a cooler and a case of something for the house all travel within the payload for the aircraft on the day. Say what is coming at the enquiry rather than at the ramp.

Why fly when you can drive the Overseas Highway?

Because the drive is about three hours each way from Miami and it is the same three hours on the way home, at the end of the day, in the traffic.

Flying turns a weekend into a day trip and a week into a long weekend. The road itself is worth doing once, which is part of why the last twenty-one miles from Marathon are still a drive rather than a flight.

Where are the Key deer, and can we get to them from the airport?

They are on Big Pine Key and No Name Key, which hold most of the population, and they are the reason the National Key Deer Refuge exists. From Marathon it is the same half-hour drive as anything else on the island.

They are wild animals and feeding them is prohibited, so watch and keep your distance. Traffic is the largest single cause of death among them, so drive slowly after dusk.

Can you do Big Pine Key as a day trip from Miami?

Comfortably, and it is a common way to fly this route. On a charter the aircraft is held for your block, so the return is set by you rather than by a timetable. Out in the morning, the car waiting at Marathon, back in the evening. Tell us at the enquiry if you would rather stay a night or a weekend and the aircraft is planned around that instead.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day?

A paved runway tolerates a great deal that a water landing does not, which is the main practical argument for this aircraft in winter. If conditions are genuinely below minimums the crew moves or stands down the flight and the weather and delays policy says what that means for your booking. That call belongs to the crew, made against published limits, never a preference.

Can we fly on to Key West or the Dry Tortugas afterwards?

Yes, and it is a natural second leg. Key West is twenty-eight miles further west with its own runway, and the Dry Tortugas sit about seventy miles beyond that with nothing in between. The same airframe carries on or comes back for you. Tell us the shape of the trip at the enquiry and it is quoted as one movement rather than as separate charters.

Is a charter cheaper than a scheduled flight to the Keys?

No, and it is not trying to be. A scheduled seat is cheaper because somebody else chose the time and the aircraft is shared, and to the Lower Keys it usually means Key West and a drive back east afterwards. Charter buys the block: your departure, your return, your party only, your load. On a short trip that is several more usable hours on the island.

Can a seaplane land at Big Pine Key instead?

Yes, and for some parties it is the better answer because it removes the drive entirely. A seaplane sets down on the water rather than on a runway, so the trade is a shorter day against conditions that have to cooperate. We quote the two against each other rather than selling one. The seaplane page covers how that version of the trip works.

Can I bring a pet on a small plane charter?

Yes, pets travel in the cabin with you. The one thing we ask is that you tell us at the enquiry, with the type of animal and its weight, so the seating and the load plan are right from the start.
