The town is here because Henry Flagler ran his railway down this coast, and the house he built for himself still stands at the north end of the island, facing the lagoon. It sits right on the Lake Trail, so it is the one sight on the island a party can reach on foot from the water with nothing arranged. The Lake Trail is a paved path along the lagoon shore, roughly five and a half miles long, and it is the best free thing on the island. It begins at Lakeside Park beside the town docks, runs north behind the houses and past the Flagler Museum, and ends just beyond the Sailfish Club near the top of the island. The water stays on your left the whole way, with the city on the mainland across it. Bicycles are rented on the island rather than flown in. Most parties ride one way and take a car back, which is worth booking before you land rather than at the far end of the trail.

Behind the barrier island lies the Lake Worth Lagoon, sheltered water about twenty one miles long and up to a mile wide, which meets the Atlantic at the Lake Worth Inlet in the north. The town marina sits at the west end of Australian Avenue. Its berths run along the Australian, Brazilian and Peruvian docks, each named for the avenue it faces, with the Royal Palm dock added in the latest rebuild, and the boats there are big enough that their crews are part of the town.
