The county has a large airport in the middle of the city and smaller fields spread out around it, and a chartered aircraft can use any of them. That is the first decision of the day, and it is the one most people do not know they have. What it buys a private party is the drive.

A field ten minutes from the address is worth more on a leg this short than anything that happens in the air, because the flight was never the long part.

Clematis Street runs five blocks from Flagler Drive on the water back to Rosemary Avenue. It is the main street of the city in the plain sense: the restaurants, the bars and the evening are on it or a block off it.

For a party landing in the middle of the afternoon this is usually where the car goes first, because everything else downtown is walkable from it. A car held for the afternoon rather than one booked for a single transfer is the arrangement that fits here, and it is set up with the flight rather than found on arrival.

Rosemary Square is the shopping and restaurant quarter a few blocks south, and the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts sits on its western edge. Between them they are the reason a good number of these flights leave Miami in the late afternoon rather than the morning. An evening here is a drive and an overnight if you come by road.

On a charter it is a flight up, a car waiting, and the same aircraft on the ramp when the curtain comes down. The hour of the return is set on the day rather than guessed at when you book, which is the difference between staying for dinner afterwards and watching the clock through the second half.

North of the inlet the barrier island is Singer Island, and the marinas around the inlet are where parties joining a boat actually go. It is a short run from any of the fields, and it is the usual reason a group flies up rather than drives: a boat leaves when it leaves.

The Loggerhead Marinelife Center at Juno Beach is a sea turtle hospital open to visitors. Both are closer to the field at Palm Beach Gardens than to the city airport, which is exactly the kind of thing that decides where a charter lands.

A family day built around the north end of the county starts twenty minutes ahead if the aircraft goes to the northern field, and that is a question we ask at the enquiry rather than one you have to think of.

Inland from the coast the county runs out into farmland and ends at Lake Okeechobee. The Glades airport at Pahokee sits on the eastern shore of it, roughly forty miles west of the city, and it is the least known of the county fields by a wide margin.

Almost nobody flies commercially to a place like that, which is the point. A party going to the lake, to a shoot or to a property out that way saves an hour of driving in each direction by landing there instead, and the aircraft does not mind. If your address is west rather than east, say so and the field changes.

When the aircraft carries one party, what goes in the back is a conversation about weight rather than a rule about bag counts. That is a practical difference on this route more than a philosophical one. Golf clubs, rods, a cooler for the boat, a case of something for the house: all of it travels, within the payload for the aircraft on the day.

West Palm Beach is often the first stop rather than the whole trip.
