The Iguanas That Live Only Here
Protected Ground
The cay has one permanent resident and it is a lizard. The Sandy Cay rock iguana, also called the White Cay iguana, lives on this cay and nowhere else on earth. A feral raccoon and a rat population very nearly finished it in the 1990s.
After both were removed, surveys counted between 112 and 168 animals, and by 2008 the count had climbed back past two thousand. That history is why the sand is walked rather than driven over, why nothing is fed, and why everything that comes ashore leaves again in the aircraft.

If the day is about fish rather than swimming, the water between the cay and Little Exuma is flats country: pale, shallow and firm enough to wade a long way from anything.
