Thirty Feet Across
This is the one people come for and the one you get from the air on the way in. At the Glass Window the island squeezes down to roughly thirty feet of rock, the open Atlantic piling in on the north side and the pale green Bight of Eleuthera lying flat on the south.
Two different seas, a few steps apart. The stone arch that gave the place its name went years ago in a hurricane. What carries the road now is a bridge that has been rebuilt more than once. Winslow Homer painted the arch in 1885 for a magazine commission, and the name he used has outlasted the rock itself.
Half a mile or so south, on the Atlantic side, the Queen's Baths are pools worn into the rock that fill at high tide and warm through the afternoon. They are worth the walk only when the sea is quiet, so the hour counts for as much as the date does.
Preacher's Cave at the Top of North Eleuthera
Since 1648
The reason anybody lives up here at all is a cave at the very top of the island. In 1648 a party of English settlers went onto the reef off the north shore and sheltered in it. The stone altar their captain built is still standing inside.
Those settlers named the island and founded the first permanent settlement in the Bahamas, and a service was held in the cave on the anniversary every year for the next century. The site is looked after by the national antiquities body and is reached either by a paved road or by a short climb up from the beach.
The Devil's Backbone off North Eleuthera
Flown, Not Threaded
The reef those settlers hit is still exactly where it was. The Devil's Backbone is a line of rock, coral and moving sand along the north shore, and the boat passage between Spanish Wells and Harbour Island runs straight through the middle of it.
It has taken enough ships since 1648 that the wrecks are a dive site in their own right, and boats making that run still take a local pilot aboard for the few miles. A helicopter passes above the whole thing instead, which is the plainest single argument for this aircraft at this end of the country.
Current Cut, West of North Eleuthera
Ten Knots
West of the settlements a channel roughly a hundred yards wide splits the island from Current Island, and the whole tide is forced through it. The water moves at six to ten knots and the drift is finished in about ten minutes.
That makes it one of the quickest drift dives anywhere and the reason divers come to this end of Eleuthera rather than the middle of it. Eagle rays and blacktips work the walls at around sixty feet. It is dived on the incoming tide for the clearer water, so the sea picks the hour rather than you.
The Settlements of North Eleuthera
Where People Live
North Eleuthera is a district as much as a place. The Bluff sits at the top and is the biggest of them, Upper and Lower Bogue lie behind it, Current is out to the west and Gregory Town further south. Together they came to a little under four thousand people at the last count.
Between them the Atlantic side runs to limestone cliff with sand underneath it, and that is the shape of the whole north end: rough water on one coast, flat water on the other, minutes apart. Gregory Town is the island's old pineapple town and sits just south of the Glass Window.
Three Island Dock and Gene's Bay at North Eleuthera
Fifteen Minutes Across
Two small docks at the north end do all of the connecting. Three Island Dock, about a mile from the settlements, is where the water taxi leaves for Dunmore Town on Harbour Island. Gene's Bay, a few miles west, is where it leaves for Spanish Wells.
Either crossing runs around fifteen minutes and the boats go through the day rather than to a timetable. That is why so many parties whose real destination is somewhere else still come in here first, and why a day built around pink sand starts at the top of the island.
Dunmore Town runs on golf carts rather than cars, so ground transport is worth asking for at the enquiry rather than at the dock, and if a boat is meeting you instead, a dock pickup is arranged with the flight.
South of North Eleuthera, Down the Long Island
A Hundred and Ten Miles
South of the Glass Window the island simply keeps going, another hundred miles of it, through Gregory Town, Governor's Harbour in the middle and Rock Sound at the bottom. It is a mile wide in places and there is one road down the length of it.
Which end you come into is therefore the first decision of the day and not the last, and it is why this page and the Eleuthera route are two different days. By air the two ends are minutes apart. On that one road they are not.
