North Eleuthera sits at the top of a very long island and it is the field almost every party chooses, for one reason: the two places most people are actually going are both a short ride across the water from it. Harbour Island is on one side, Spanish Wells on the other.

What a charter changes is that this is a decision rather than a given. Scheduled travel puts you where the airline flies and leaves the rest to you. Here the landing site is set at the enquiry, alongside the hour, and if the house is somewhere else on the island the aircraft goes there instead.

Clearing in happens in the building beside the apron, a few steps from where you stop rolling, and the filing was done before you left Florida. From there the day is yours until you say otherwise.

Harbour Island is what most parties come for, and the pink sand along its eastern shore is what they come to see. Dunmore Town behind it is small enough to walk: pastel cottages, a handful of places to eat, and golf carts instead of cars.

The beach is at its best in the first hours, before the boats from Nassau and the tours out of Florida put people on it.

A scheduled traveller cannot buy that hour, because the first flight in is the first flight in. A chartered aircraft can leave Miami at first light, which is the single most common request we get on this route and the clearest thing an owned departure time is worth.

What there is to do once you are across belongs on the North Eleuthera destination page rather than here, and a day built around lunch somewhere specific is a fly and dine day. Anything more particular is a custom request and we would rather hear it early than well.

The other short crossing from the field goes west rather than east, to a working fishing settlement with its own harbour and a quieter kind of day. Parties who have already done Harbour Island often come here instead the second time. It is the same quarter of an hour on the water, and the same difference applies.

A group tied to a published return spends the afternoon watching the clock and leaves early to be safe. With the aircraft held for you there is no clock to watch: you cross when you want, stay as long as it deserves, and come back when you are finished.

If the crossing is the part you would rather skip altogether, a seaplane to North Eleuthera can put down on the water closer to where you are going. That is a different aircraft and a different page.

A golf cart on Harbour Island, a car at the field, a boat at the dock: none of it is hard to arrange and all of it is hard to arrange on arrival, particularly at a weekend when the carts go first.

Because the flight is a booking rather than a ticket, everything around it is part of the same conversation. Ask for ground transport at the enquiry and it is there when the door opens, which on an island this size is worth more than it sounds. It comes back priced with the aircraft rather than as a separate errand.

Eleuthera runs south for about a hundred and ten miles and the north end is only the top of it. There are two more paved fields down the length: Governor's Harbour in the middle and Rock Sound in the south. For a party whose house is down there, landing at the north end means a long drive at the end of a short flight.

The parts of the day that are not the flight are the parts that go wrong when nobody owns them. A boat that was not booked, a table that was full, a cart that went to somebody else that morning. When the aircraft belongs to one party, the day around it can be planned as one thing.

The boat is booked to meet the landing, the cart is at the dock, and if lunch is the point of the trip the table is held for the hour you will actually be there.
