Why You Came
The colony is the reason the cay has a second name. Exuma Island iguanas shelter in the low scrub behind the beach overnight, come out with the sun and walk down onto the sand when people arrive.
They are a subspecies found on seven cays in the middle and southern Exumas and nowhere else on earth, they grow to about a metre from nose to tail and they are listed as endangered. Generations of them have learned that boats mean food, so they are unafraid rather than tame: you can walk the beach among them and anything held in a hand gets their attention.
They have been protected in the Bahamas under the Wild Animals Protection Act since 1968. Dogs are not landed on the cay and the animals are not fed by hand, which is the whole reason there is still a colony here to walk among.
The Beach and the White Cliffs
One Long Beach
There is one beach on the cay and it runs the length of the western shore, pale sand shelving into water shallow enough to stand in a long way out. At the southern end it finishes against a wall of white limestone that rises straight out of the sand.
That wall is what people photograph and it is the reason the cay looks like nowhere else in the chain. Behind the beach there is no path worth the name, no shade and no shelter, so an afternoon here is planned around the water rather than around the land. A beach picnic is set up before you arrive, because there is nothing to buy on the cay.
The Swimming Pigs at Big Major Cay
Minutes North
The swimming pigs are the single most written about thing in this part of the Exumas and they live about three miles north, on Big Major Cay. Almost nobody comes down for the iguanas without asking for the pigs in the same breath.
The two beaches sit close enough that one boat afternoon covers both, so the question worth answering when you send the date is not whether you can do both but in which order. That changes the hours and it changes what the boat is doing while you are ashore.
Staniel Cay and the Yacht Club
Three Miles North
Everything with a roof on it in this stretch of the chain is on Staniel Cay, three miles north: the yacht club, the two small grocery stores and the fuel dock. It is the only place in these few miles where anything is sold at all.
It is the practical half of a day at the cay. Lunch, a boat, ice and a place to walk are all there. Guests who want a table rather than a beach book a fly and dine day. Anything outside the usual list goes to custom requests.
The Nurse Sharks at Compass Cay
A Short Run
North again, at Compass Cay, nurse sharks gather in the shallows around the marina dock and have done for years. They are the calm half of the shark reputation the Exumas carry and the one that works with children along.
It is the third stop on the standard loop through these few miles, after the iguanas and the pigs, and it is close enough that all three fit between a morning arrival and an afternoon departure.
Thunderball Grotto
Slack Water
The grotto sits just off Staniel Cay, a hollow rock you swim into through a low opening, with light coming down through holes in the roof. It took its name from the James Bond film shot there in 1965.
The tide decides it rather than the diary: the swim in is easy at slack water and hard against a running current, so the hour is set by the sea and not by you.
