The One Built Thing
A US Navy Decca master station stood on the cay until it was abandoned in the 1960s, and the buildings still stand above a small cove on the west shore.
Four tall pilings mark the channel in from deeper water, which is why the anchorage here is still known by the station rather than by the cay, on the charts and among the crews who use it.
It is the only built thing in a stretch of water where there is otherwise none, and it is where most parties walk first. Nothing about it is managed or ticketed. There is no gate, no guide and no closing time, so how long you stay is your own decision rather than a slot somebody else has set.
The Path Across to the East Shore
Ten Minutes on Foot
From the ruins a path runs through low scrub to the far side of the cay, where the shore faces open water instead of the creek. It is a walk of minutes rather than an excursion, and it is the point at which the cay stops feeling like an anchorage and starts feeling like an island.
The tide leaves small conch shells along that shore as it drops. There is no made-up track, only the line other people have walked, so footwear that copes with scrub and rock is worth having in the bag. Bring it in with you: there is nowhere out here to buy any.

Low Water Only
Pipe Creek is the water the cay sits in: shallow cays, flats and sand between the deeper channels, in every shade from pale turquoise to dark blue. It is the part of the day you already saw on the way in, because the last few miles of the flight run straight over it.
At low water the bank between the cay and its neighbours dries into open sand with nothing on it and nothing around it, which is where a beach picnic goes.

A Mile and a Half North

South of the creek is the settlement everyone else in this part of the Exumas is heading for: a yacht club, a paved strip, fuel and the only reliable supplies for a long way in either direction. A table there for the afternoon is the usual shape of a long day out here.

Thunderball Grotto at Slack Water
Snorkel Depth
The grotto is a hollow rock off Staniel Cay that you swim into through an opening at the waterline, with light falling in through holes in the roof. It is the single most photographed thing in this part of the chain and it takes nothing more than a mask.
Slack water is when it is worth doing, because the current runs hard through the cut on either side of it. That puts it on the same tide table as the drying banks, so a day that wants both is planned around the water rather than around the clock.

Five Miles South
The pigs swim out to the boats in a shallow bay five miles south of the creek, and they are the reason a good number of people come to this part of the Exumas at all. From the cay it is a boat run rather than a second flight.
