Small Plane Flights from Miami to Compass Cay

The strip runs 17/35 across Staniel Cay, 3,031 feet of asphalt with water at both ends. From the air it looks improbably short and from the seat it is an ordinary landing, because a small plane needs a fraction of it.

There is no border desk here and that is the one thing worth knowing before you plan the day. Staniel Cay is not a Bahamian port of entry, so a flight from Florida clears in somewhere else on the way and arrives here already domestic. By the time you are on the apron the paperwork is behind you.

The terminal is a building rather than a complex. From it the road to the Staniel Cay Yacht Club dock takes a few minutes by cart or truck, and that dock is where the Compass Cay part of the day starts.

Compass Cay lies about eight miles north of Staniel Cay and the link is water. Ten to twenty-five minutes depending on the boat and the state of the cuts, arranged from the yacht club dock where water taxis and local boats work through the day.

The run itself is part of why people come. It threads between cays with sandbars showing at low water and dark cuts between them, and Big Major Cay with the pigs on it sits directly on the way. Most parties stop there in one direction rather than making a separate trip of it.

This is the one genuine extra step a wheeled aircraft has here. It is also the step that buys you a paved runway, which is the better trade on a winter morning or with a load on board. Guests who would rather not do it at all fly the same route by seaplane to the marina instead, and we quote both against each other rather than selling one.

The marina sits in a natural harbour on the west side of the cay, so it is there at all. Nurse sharks gather in the shallows around the docks, habituated to people over many years. They are large: a grown one runs seven to fourteen feet and a couple of hundred pounds, and they look considerably more alarming than they behave.

The marina's own rule is the one that matters, which is to stay out of the water at feeding time. The jetty has steps down to a low tide platform for anyone who would rather meet them dry.

A ten minute walk from the marina puts you on Crescent Beach, which is the sheltered side and empty most days because nobody arrives here who has not come by boat or by air.

Rachel's Bubble Bath is the other one people ask for: a tidal lagoon on the ocean side that froths over the rocks when the swell and the tide line up. There is a walking trail across the cay to it, along with a short climb to the high point at about ninety feet and a bat cave at the southern end.

None of it is far. The cay is small enough to see on foot in an afternoon, which is what makes it work as a day rather than a stay, and anything you want set up before you land goes on the quote with the flight.

The pigs are eight minutes by boat from Staniel Cay and directly on the run north, so almost every Compass Cay day includes them without anybody planning it as a separate stop. They swim out to meet a boat and they are entirely unbothered by people.

It is a short, strange, genuinely good twenty minutes and it photographs better than it has any right to. Big Major Cay has its own page and its own route from Miami for parties who want the day built around it instead.

The grotto is a limestone cave just off Staniel Cay, open to the sky through holes in the roof so that light comes down in columns through the water. It is snorkelling rather than diving and it is best at slack tide, which the boat crew answers, not you.

The underwater plane wreck in the shallows nearby is the other stop on that short loop. Between the grotto, the wreck and the sandbars, a party that leaves Staniel Cay in the morning can see three separate things before lunch and still be at Compass Cay by early afternoon.

This is the part of the day a runway changes most. Load on a small aircraft is a weight question rather than a bag count, and a wheeled airframe has more of it to give than floats do.

Compass Cay works as the middle of a trip rather than the whole of it, and clearing in on the way is what makes that easy: once you are through, every leg after it is domestic.
