The Crossing

Small Plane Flights Miami to Cay Sal

Cay Sal is the piece of the Bahamas nobody drives past, because there is no road, no ferry and nobody living on it. The bank sits on its own between Cuba, the Florida Keys and Andros: 5,226 square kilometres of shallow water carrying 96 small islands and not quite fifteen square kilometres of land between all of them.

From Miami it is about a hundred and forty three miles of open water and almost none of it has anything on it.

You leave the coast behind in a minute or two, cross the Straits, and the colour under the wing turns from navy to a turquoise you can see the bottom through long before any island shows up. What that runs in block time depends on the aircraft and the departure point, and it comes back with the quote.

Everything between those two moments is ours: the departure point in Miami, the aircraft and the crew, both border filings and the travel documents the Bahamas wants before you leave Florida. Your party brings passports and a bag.

One thing about this run is different from every other crossing we fly out of the city, and it decides the aircraft: the bank carries no open runway. A small plane charter from Miami to Cay Sal is quoted alongside the seaplane that actually sets down there, and the rest of the Small Plane routes from Miami land on wheels as usual.

How It Works

How a Small Plane Charter Miami to Cay Sal Actually Works

Cay Sal is a different country, so a day there is two border crossings in one afternoon, and it is the one crossing out of Miami where the border and the destination are not the same place. Nothing about the paperwork is yours except the passports.

The short version: you clear out of Florida, you clear into the Bahamas at a port of entry on the way, and then the last leg runs out to the bank.

Plan Your Cay Sal Charter

The Surface

Cay Sal has a strip on the map and nothing a small plane can use

The island carries a single asphalt runway, 11/29, about 2,400 feet of it, laid during the Second World War. It has been abandoned for decades and reads as abandoned from the air.

Nobody maintains it, nobody lives on the island and there is no fuel, no fire cover and no lighting. A wheeled charter therefore does not put you down on Cay Sal, and the honest version of this route is further down the page.

The Border

You clear customs and immigration on the way to Cay Sal, then fly on

The bank belongs to the Bimini district and carries no port of entry of its own, so the aircraft touches down at one first. South Bimini or Nassau, for example, whichever suits the routing and the hour on the day.

It is a short stop: the crew files the manifest before departure, the desk sees the passports, and then you carry on. Which field it is gets decided with the crew, not sold to you in advance.

Leaving Miami

Leaving Miami for Cay Sal is the quieter of the two borders

Outbound from Florida the filing is done for you and the aircraft departs from a general aviation ramp rather than a terminal. You arrive at the departure point close to boarding, not two hours before.

Coming home is the step people forget: a return from the islands clears United States customs at a designated field, and the crew plans the routing around that not around the shortest line.

The Last Leg

The last few minutes into Cay Sal are flown on floats, not wheels

Once you are cleared into the country the bank is a short hop away and the set-down is on water, in the lee of one of the cays.

That is a seaplane crossing and it is a different aircraft with its own page. Parties who want the whole day on one airframe fly it that way from Miami instead, and we say so at the enquiry rather than after it.

Weather

Weather counts twice on a Cay Sal charter, in the air and on the water

An open bank has no shelter on it, so the surface matters as much as the sky. A rough day makes a water landing a poor idea while the crossing itself is untroubled, so the date and the forecast are discussed before anything is confirmed. What flies on the day is a crew decision against published minimums, never a preference.

The Block

The aircraft waits, which is what makes Cay Sal a day trip at all

There is nothing on the bank to wait at: no terminal, no hotel, nowhere to spend an unplanned night. On a charter the airframe is yours for the block, so the return is set by you and the crew stays with the aircraft. That is the whole reason a place this empty works as a day out of Miami.

Departure Points

Departure Points for Small Plane Flights to Cay Sal from Miami

A small plane uses short fields that a jet cannot, so the departure point is chosen for your ground time. These are the four we use around Miami. Select one to see exactly where it sits.

Miami Executive

Miami Executive Airport, TMB, Kendall

Kendall-Tamiami in the south west of the county and the field both small planes sit at, the land aircraft and the amphibian. A charter that starts here starts without a positioning leg, which is what decides an early morning on a same day return. It is also the shortest drive from the south and west of the county.

How to Charter

Charter a Small Plane from Miami to Cay Sal

Chartering an aircraft is not booking a seat. There are four steps, and only the first one is yours.

Plan Your Cay Sal Charter
  1. 01

    Contact Us

Write to us on WhatsApp or by email. Send your dates, how many guests, where you are coming from and where you want to travel. Tell us the hour you would like to leave. For Cay Sal say whether you want to be on the bank itself or over it, because that is the question that picks the aircraft.

  2. 02

    Get Aircraft and Prices Back

We check what is free on your date and send what fits, wheels and floats against each other. Seats, baggage and flight time for each one. Every aircraft costs a little differently, so we can find the best fit for you.

  3. 03

    Confirm and Pay

You pick the aircraft, and we set the pickup point, the clearing stop and the set-down. Then everything around the flight. Catering on board, ground transport on the Florida side, a boat to meet you if the day ends on the water. You approve it, you pay, and your boarding time, departure point and everything included come back to you.

  4. 04

    Just Arrive 30 Minutes Early

You will have no terminal and no queue. Just make sure you are there 30 minutes before. Then you take off, cross to the bank, and enjoy the day.

On the Bank

Where a Miami to Cay Sal Small Plane Puts You Down

The aircraft crosses to a bank with nothing built on it, so what follows is not a list of places to go but a list of what is actually out there and what each part of it asks of the flight.

The order is the one enquiries arrive in: the surface first, then the border, then the water.

The Old Strip on Cay Sal

Where Wheels Would Go
A single engine small plane on wheels in flight over a reef line and a built up stretch of coast

There is a runway on Cay Sal and it has not been used in living memory. It runs 11/29, roughly 2,400 feet of asphalt at five feet above the sea, and it was laid during the Second World War.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force held a small post on the island from the 1960s until the end of the 1970s and left. Since then nobody has lived there. Aerial imagery shows the strip abandoned, the buildings on the west side are ruins and there is no fuel, no lighting and nobody to call.

That is the fact the whole route turns on. It is also, for a certain kind of guest, the reason to come: an airfield that the country simply stopped using is a rare thing to circle over on the way in.

In Detail

Small Plane Miami to Cay Sal: The Bank, the Border and the Water Landing

Everything above is the day. What follows is the detail behind it: what the crossing looks like, where the border is handled, why the far end is water rather than asphalt, and what charter changes about a flight to the Bahamas.

Miami to Cay Sal by Small Plane: Flying Low Over the Reef and the Flats

Room enough and a window each on a Cay Sal small plane

The crossing is not dead time between two airports. A small plane crosses low enough to see what is under it, so the water is part of the day rather than something to sit through. A small aircraft flies low and slow over the water. You watch the Straits go from navy to something with light in it, and then the bank arrives underneath in bands of turquoise with the bottom visible through all of them. The Cay Sal Bank is the third largest in the Bahamas and almost all of it is shallow: a lagoon of nine to sixteen metres ringed by 96 cays that add up to under fifteen square kilometres of land. From the air that reads as an enormous pale plate with a dark rim, and the rim is where the depth falls away. Every seat is a window seat on an aircraft this size, and the same is true of scenic flights of this size, so nobody watches the crossing over someone's shoulder. Other small plane routes from Miami fly the same way.

Small Plane to Cay Sal from Miami: You Decide the Departure Time

Your hour, your names and a small plane to Cay Sal

Nobody hands you a timetable on a charter. The day is built around the hour you name. You name the hour you want to lift off, the hour you want to be standing on Cay Sal and which water in the city suits your morning. The aircraft belongs to your party for the day, so all three are your decision rather than a departure somebody else set, and a change the week before is a message to us. If the drive is shorter the other way, the same day runs out of Fort Lauderdale. Half an hour before the lift-off is the whole of the check-in. Your party walks from the car to the aircraft, the bags go on in front of you, and the list for that flight carries your names and nobody else's. Nothing about the morning waits on a stranger. Everything else is filed before departure; the travel documents page lists what we need and by when. And the crossing is a reason in itself. The windows are deep and the aircraft crosses low, so there is room for everybody to sit and watch the water change instead of taking turns at one of them.

Small Plane Charter to Cay Sal from Miami: The Crew Files Both Borders, You Carry a Passport

Passports are all your party carries on a Cay Sal crossing

A small plane from Miami to Cay Sal crosses an international border twice in a day. It is the part that goes wrong when nobody files it in advance. Entry into the Bahamas asks for a declaration filed from Florida, clearance at a port of entry on arrival and a US return filed before you leave, which is what sets where you may land coming home. On a Crown Air charter the crew files all three. Passports for everyone, children included, per the travel documents guidance. What may travel sits in the baggage guidance. That same filing sets where you land coming home: a return from the islands clears at None, so a day that began on the water finishes on a ramp and a departure moved by weather runs under the weather and delays policy. If the party changes before the flight, the crew refiles. A name added, a name dropped: that is a message to us rather than a problem for you.

Small Plane Miami Cay Sal: Milestone Days and Bahamas Weekends

A day trip, a weekend or something to celebrate on Cay Sal

A private small plane from Miami to Cay Sal is booked when the day is worth marking: a birthday, a proposal, a graduation, a weekend away with the people who matter. The flight is short enough that the occasion, not the travelling, is what the day is about. That is what a small plane Miami Cay Sal charter is for. A group that wants a beach entirely to itself is asking for a harder thing than it sounds, and this is one of the few places within an hour or so of Miami where it is simply true. Cay Sal earns its place on that list for one reason: it is empty. Some parties fly over for the day and are home the same evening. Others stay on and book the return for the day they want. Both are the same charter, and the whole group travels together on one booking. If there is something to celebrate, say so when you book: catering, a private chef, premium beverages and flowers travel with you. Everything is in place before you board in Miami.

Questions

Small Plane Charter Miami to Cay Sal: Questions Answered

Can a plane land on Cay Sal?

Not on wheels. There is one runway on the island, 11/29 and about 2,400 feet of asphalt, but it was built during the Second World War and has been abandoned for decades. Nobody lives on Cay Sal and nothing there is maintained. A charter reaches the bank by setting down on the water instead, which is a seaplane and a different page on this site.

Why is there a small plane page for Cay Sal at all?

Because most of the trip is the crossing and the border, and both of those are flown the same way whatever lands at the end. People search for a small plane charter from Miami to Cay Sal and deserve a straight answer about the surface rather than a booking form. We quote wheels and floats against each other and say which one actually works on your date.

How long is the flight from Miami to Cay Sal?

The great circle distance from downtown Miami is about 124 nautical miles, roughly 143 statute miles. The block time depends on the aircraft and which field you leave from, and it is confirmed with the boarding time before you book. What really sets the length of the day is the clearing stop on the way in and the customs field on the way home.

Do I need a passport to fly to Cay Sal?

Yes, for every passenger including children. The Cay Sal Bank is Bahamian territory and a private aircraft does not change that. We take the passport details once at the enquiry and file the manifest for both sides before departure. The travel documents page lists what each passenger hands over and by when, including the cases that need more notice.

Where do you clear customs on a Cay Sal charter?

At a port of entry on the way in, because the bank does not carry one of its own. South Bimini or Nassau are the usual examples and the crew picks whichever fits the routing and the hour. The stop is short: the manifest is filed before departure and the desk sees the passports. Coming home you clear United States customs at a designated field.

What is actually on Cay Sal?

Very little, and that is the appeal. The island is about a mile and a half long with a salt pond in the middle that storm sea refills, ruined buildings on the west side and stunted palms.

The name comes from the Spanish salt pans. Around it the bank carries 96 cays in groups such as the Anguilla Cays, the Dog Rocks and the Damas Cays, none of them inhabited.

Can you do Cay Sal as a day trip from Miami?

Yes, and on a charter that is the usual shape, because there is nowhere on the bank to stay. The aircraft is held for your block, so the return is set by you rather than by a timetable. Out in the morning, back in the evening, with both borders handled either side. An early departure is worth more here than on a short hop.

How much baggage can we take on a small plane to Cay Sal?

It is a weight question rather than a bag count. A small aircraft trades payload against passengers and fuel, so four guests with dive tanks and four with day bags are different aircraft. Say what is coming at the enquiry, including rods, coolers and anything with a battery in it, and the answer comes back with the quote rather than at the ramp.

Can we bring dive gear to Cay Sal?

Yes, within the payload for the aircraft on the day. The bank is known for deep blue holes and steep walls, so gear is the normal case rather than the exception on this route. Tanks, weights and cameras all count against the load, so tell us the full list at the enquiry. Anything larger than luggage moves as island logistics instead.

How far is Cay Sal from Cuba and from the Keys?

Closer to Cuba than to anywhere Bahamian. The bank lies roughly 50 kilometres north of Cuba across the Nicholas Channel and about 100 kilometres south of Key Largo, while the nearest Bahamian land is around 120 kilometres away. It belongs to the Bimini district despite that distance, which is the detail that decides where a charter clears in.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day of the Cay Sal flight?

The bank is open water with no shelter, so the surface matters as much as the sky and a rough day can make the set-down a poor idea while the crossing itself is fine.

If conditions are below minimums the crew moves or stands down the flight and the weather and delays policy says what that means for your booking. That call is the crew's, made against published limits.

Can we fly on to another island from Cay Sal afterwards?

Yes. Once you are cleared into the Bahamas every leg after it is domestic, so the bank works as one stop in a longer movement rather than the whole day. Andros, the Berry Islands, Bimini and Nassau are all reachable on the same trip. Tell us the shape of it at the enquiry and it is quoted as one movement rather than as separate flights.

Is it cheaper than a scheduled flight?

There is no scheduled flight to Cay Sal, so the comparison does not exist on this route. Nothing calls there: no airline, no ferry and no regular boat. What charter buys is the only practical way to spend a day on the bank and come home the same evening, with your departure, your return and your party only. The quote covers the whole movement rather than a fare.

Can I bring a pet on a small plane charter?

Yes, pets travel in the cabin with you. The one thing we ask is that you tell us at the enquiry, with the type of animal and its weight, so the seating and the load plan are right from the start.
