The harbour in the middle of the island is one of the most sheltered deep-water anchorages in the Bahamas and has been used as a hurricane hole for as long as boats have crossed this water. Dunmore Town Without Watching the Clock
Harbour Island
Harbour Island lies about eleven nautical miles from Royal Island and Dunmore Town is the reason people go: the pink sand on the Atlantic side, the golf carts, the lunch that runs longer than it was supposed to. A party on a scheduled return leaves early to be safe and spends the last hour of the afternoon watching a clock.

Down the Road
A short drive south of the airfield the island narrows to roughly thirty feet of rock, with the dark Atlantic on one side and the pale Bight of Eleuthera on the other. The natural stone arch that Winslow Homer painted in 1885 was torn out by storms long ago and a road bridge stands in its place, but the two colours meeting is what people come for.
Half a mile further on, the Queen's Baths are rock pools on the Atlantic shore that fill at high tide and warm through in the sun. They are worth the stop on a calm day and not worth it on a rough one.

Preacher's Cave at the North Tip
Where It Started
English settlers wrecked on the reef off this coast in 1648 and sheltered in a limestone cave at the north end of the island. The stone altar their captain cut is still inside it, a service was held there every year for a century afterwards, and the site now sits under the country's antiquities authority.
