The best known address on this island is a small wooden house on the south shore with a beach on one side and a little marina on the other. It is a biological field station, and it has been studying sharks in these waters since the 1990s.
It is a working research base rather than an attraction, so a visit runs to their calendar and not to yours. A short way along the airport road, under overgrown trees, sits a small limestone well. Local tradition ties it to the spring Juan Ponce de Leon is said to have been looking for when he sailed this way in the sixteenth century, and the Bahamian tourist board carries the story on its own pages.
What is actually there is a well, a short path and a few benches. It takes ten minutes and it is on the way in, so almost everybody who lands here sees it and almost nobody plans an afternoon around it.
The Sapona, South of the Island
Snorkel Depth
A mile or so off the southern end, the concrete hull of a First World War cargo ship stands out of the water where a hurricane put her in 1926. She was later used as a bombing target, so little of her is left above the surface.
The main deck sits in around fifteen feet, shallow enough that snorkellers and divers are looking at the same thing from different depths. She is also the single most photographed object in Bimini, and the reason a boat afternoon here usually runs south rather than north. From the air on the way in she is visible before the island is.

The bank behind the island is bonefish water, and the wall falls away into deep water a short run offshore. That combination has carried a fishing reputation out of all proportion to the size of the place for the better part of a century.
