The Lighthouse at the South End
Lit Since 1836
The stone tower on the southern tip has been lit since 1836, which makes it older than anything else standing on this stretch of the bank. It was raised to mark the passage underneath it for shipping running west, at a time when misreading that gap put a hull on the reef.
It is a landmark rather than an attraction: no visitor centre, no keeper and no path laid out for anyone. What it gives you from the cabin is the turn on the way in and a fixed point that says which cay you are looking at. From a boat below it still does the job it was built for, which is why it is lit at all.
Gun Cay Cut
The Gateway
The channel between this cay and North Cat Cay is one of the main gates off the Gulf Stream and onto the Great Bahama Bank. Boats crossing from Florida come through here and then run east over the bank towards the Northwest Channel and Nassau beyond it.
That traffic is why the water around an empty cay is busier than it looks, and why the anchorage behind it has been in use for as long as anyone has been making the crossing. Reef runs north off the Cat Cay side, so boats hug this side of the gap.
From a helicopter the cut is the clearest line on the whole approach: deep blue on one side, pale green on the other, a few hundred yards of water between two cays. The colour change carries for miles either side of it, which is why the crew picks the cay out of any light.

North Cat Cay starts two miles south across the cut and it is a private club.
