The Centre
The harbour is the reason the settlement is where it is. Stocking Island lies across the front of it like a breakwater, so the water inside stays flat while Exuma Sound outside does not.
That shelter is why the harbour fills through the winter: hundreds of boats ride at anchor here in the season, which is worth knowing if a yacht transfer or a dock pickup is part of your day.
The town sits on the western shore and the beaches are on the far side of the water, so the first question we ask is the hour you want to be on the island rather than the hour you want to leave Miami. Everything else follows from that one answer.
Stocking Island and the Sandbar
Across the Water
Stocking Island is the long strip across the harbour, a little over a mile from the town side and about four miles end to end, and it carries the beaches most parties come for. The harbour side is calm and shallow, with a beach bar in the middle of it that has been the meeting point for cruising crews for decades.
The ocean side is a different beach entirely, open to the sound, with a walk over the ridge between the two. At low water the banks around it dry into open sand, which is where a beach picnic goes and where the rays come in shin deep. Add water toys if the afternoon is going to be spent on the water rather than on it.
The Flats and Exuma Sound
Fishing Days
If the day is about fish rather than swimming, the island has both halves of it within a few miles. The bank side is shallow and pale, with bonefish flats running along the western shore and around the creeks at the southern end.
Exuma Sound is the other side of the island and it falls away into deep water quickly, so a flats morning and a deep water afternoon are the same day rather than two trips. That is why parties book bonefishing and flats access or a full fishing day by air. Rods and gear travel, within the payload for the aircraft on the day.
The Swimming Pigs, Fifty Miles North
A Separate Leg
This is the thing people get wrong about Exuma and it is worth getting right before a date is fixed. The swimming pigs are on Big Major Cay, about 50 miles northwest of George Town: roughly two hours each way in a fast boat and around twenty minutes in the air.
From Great Exuma that is most of a day gone. A party whose whole reason for coming is the pigs is better flown to Big Major Cay or Staniel Cay directly, where they are minutes away, or given the second leg as part of the same charter.

Tropic of Cancer Beach and Little Exuma
Over the Bridge
South of the settlement the island narrows and a small bridge carries the road across onto Little Exuma. The beach on the far side of it is the one the island is photographed for: a long open curve of sand with the line of the Tropic of Cancer running through it.
It is a drive rather than a walk, so a golf cart or a car is worth arranging with the flight rather than at the far end. The creeks and cays between the two islands are shallow, quiet water, and the flats along them are the same ones the guides work.
George Town and the Regatta
On Foot
The settlement itself is small and walkable: a straight run of road along the water, the government buildings, the shops and the places to eat, with the harbour in front of the whole thing. It is the capital of the district rather than a resort strip, and that is the character of it.
Once a year the harbour fills for the sailing regatta the town is known for, when the wooden Bahamian sloops race in front of the settlement and the island is fuller than at any other time. If your date is anywhere near it, say so: it moves what is available on the ground, not the flight.
