The cay keeps its own festival, the Five Fs, which is everyone's shorthand for the First Friday in February Farmer's Cay Festival. It is a regatta and a homecoming at the same time: families come back from Nassau and from abroad, and the anchorage fills with visiting boats.
The racing is in traditional Bahamian wooden sloops, one sail each and the crew hiked out on planks over the side, and it runs across several days rather than one afternoon. Ashore it is music, food and a village of sixty hosting several hundred.

The cut between Little and Big Farmer's Cay is one of the few deep, navigable passes in the northern Exumas. Boats that have spent days on the shallow bank come through here to reach Exuma Sound, and it is wide enough to read from the air on the way in.
It still deserves respect from anyone on the water. A swell built by days of easterly wind meeting an outgoing tide turns it rough, and the current runs hard through it at any state of the tide.
For a fishing party the cut is the whole point. Deep water is minutes away instead of an hour, the flats behind the cay hold bonefish, and both are reachable the same morning, so bonefishing and flats access and a full fishing day by air are booked from this island.

Big Farmer's Cay lies five minutes across the water, uninhabited, with a sandbar close to a mile long that dries out as the tide falls. It is the picture people come home with: open sand in the middle of the sea with nothing standing on it.

Staniel Cay is about fifteen miles north and is the transport and tourism hub of the northern Exumas, with the grotto, Big Major Cay and Compass Cay within a short run of it. Both are minutes away by air and most of a morning by boat, which is the honest difference between the two ways of moving around here.
