Where the Day Starts
Bay Street runs the length of the harbour with the water on one side and the town on the other. It is where the boats come in, where most of the shops and bars are, and where an afternoon ashore starts whether anybody planned it that way or not.
The houses along it are clapboard with picket fences and deep porches, painted in colours that owe nothing to a design scheme, and a good number of them carry woodwork over a hundred and fifty years old. The Government Dock and the Carts
How You Get Around
The Government Dock is the public landing at the north end of Bay Street, and it is where everybody comes ashore, guests and groceries alike. Whatever brings your party to the island, the first thing you see is the harbour front itself.
Carts are hired at the dock and that is the transport: around the island in about twenty minutes and across it in about five, so almost nobody bothers with anything larger. St John's Anglican and the 1791 Grid
Built 1768
St John's Anglican Church stands on Dunmore Street, a pink and white building dating from 1768, and it is the oldest religious foundation in the Bahamas. Wesley Methodist is a short walk from it and both are working churches rather than monuments. The street plan around them is older than almost anything else you can walk through in the country.
Lord Dunmore, Royal Governor of the Bahamas from 1787 to 1796, laid the town out in 1791 in a grid of lots that the streets still follow, and the town carries his name because of it. It was once the capital of the Bahamas and second only to Nassau in importance.
