The Run North
Small Plane Flights Miami to Jacksonville
Jacksonville sits at the top of the state, 327 miles up the coast from downtown Miami, and it is the longest run we fly without leaving Florida. That distance is the entire argument for the aircraft: it is far enough to ruin a day by road and short enough to be a morning by air.
The road version is about 346 miles up the interstate and published drive times run from just under five hours to nearly six and a half, depending on which set of traffic you believe. Nobody flies this route because it is exotic. They fly it because the alternative eats the day at both ends.
The far end is a runway rather than a stretch of water. Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport carries the identifiers CRG and KCRG, has two asphalt strips of 4,004 and 4,008 feet and sits eight miles east of downtown.
A small charter aircraft lands there on wheels, the same as it would at home, and a car can be on the apron when the door opens.
Everything between those two points is ours: the departure point in Miami, the aircraft, the crew and the ground transport at the far end. This is one of several Small Plane routes from the city, and the same trip can be flown by seaplane onto the river instead, which is a different aircraft and a different page.
Plan Your Jacksonville CharterHow It Works
How a Small Plane Charter Miami to Jacksonville Actually Works
A charter up the coast is a shorter day than it sounds, because almost none of it is spent getting to and from the aircraft.
The short version: you arrive at a general aviation ramp in Miami half an hour before the block, you fly the coast, you land at Craig and a car takes you the eight miles into town.
Plan Your Jacksonville CharterThe Runway
Two asphalt strips at Craig are why this route works on wheels
Craig runs 5/23 at 4,004 feet and 14/32 at 4,008 feet, both asphalt, both a great deal more than a small charter aircraft needs.
It is a towered field owned by the Jacksonville Aviation Authority, which in practice means an ordinary approach, a short taxi and somebody expecting you. Herlong, on the southwest side, is the second option and the crew picks between them on the day.
The Ramp
You land at a general aviation ramp rather than a terminal building
There is no concourse, no baggage hall and no queue at either end. The aircraft parks on the apron, the door opens and your ground transport is standing there. Thirty minutes before the block in Miami is enough, and on arrival the walk from the seat to the car is measured in steps rather than in gates.
Leaving Miami
The departure point is chosen for your ground time, not for the map
A small charter plane needs a runway at the Miami end, so the field is picked from those that have one and then for how long it takes you to reach it. Twenty minutes saved on the drive from the house is worth more than five minutes saved in the air. The four fields we use are set out under departure points.
The Last Mile
Everything most parties come for sits within forty minutes of the apron
Downtown is eight miles from Craig. Jacksonville Beach is about sixteen, Ponte Vedra Beach seventeen, Fernandina Beach twenty-six and St. Augustine thirty-seven. The car is arranged with the flight rather than found on arrival, and where you are actually going decides which field the crew files for.
Weather
A paved runway tolerates a morning that a river landing does not
Wind and chop close water long before they close asphalt, which is the practical argument for wheels on this run in winter. What the aircraft needs on the day is a crew decision, taken against published minimums, never a preference.
The Block
The aircraft waits, which is what makes Jacksonville a day trip from Miami
On a charter the airframe is yours for the block, so the return is set by you rather than by a timetable. Out after breakfast, back for dinner, with the whole afternoon in between. Guests who want a night in town tell us at the enquiry and the crew and the aircraft are planned around it.
Departure Points
Departure Points for Small Plane Flights to Jacksonville from Miami
A small plane uses short fields that a jet cannot, so the departure point is chosen for your ground time. These are the four we use around Miami. Select one to see exactly where it sits.
Miami Executive
Miami Executive Airport, TMB, Kendall
Kendall-Tamiami in the south west of the county and the field both small planes sit at, the land aircraft and the amphibian. A charter that starts here starts without a positioning leg, which is what decides an early morning on a same day return. It is also the shortest drive from the south and west of the county.
Opa-locka Executive
Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, OPF
The executive airport north west of the city, with private terminal handling and the point most Bahamas day trips are dispatched from. That makes it the default on a Bahamas day unless the drive is against you.
Miami International
Miami International Airport, MIA
A pickup rather than a base, for a party already at MIA that wants the onward leg to leave from the same airport. Arranged per flight and confirmed with the operator before it is quoted. It costs ground time, because a commercial field moves on its own schedule.
Fort Lauderdale Executive
Fort Lauderdale Executive, FXE
Fort Lauderdale Executive, the Broward departure, with its own federal inspection station for the return from the islands. The usual choice when the group is north of Miami and the drive south would cost more time than the flight saves. The return clears there as readily as it does at Opa-locka.
How to Charter
Charter a Small Plane from Miami to Jacksonville
Chartering an aircraft is not booking a seat. There are four steps, and only the first one is yours.

On the Ground
Where a Miami to Jacksonville Small Plane Puts You Down
The aircraft puts you on the runway at Jacksonville Executive at Craig, on the east side of the city and eight miles from the middle of it. Everything below is reached from that apron, and on this route the first step of the day is a car rather than a boat.
What follows is what parties actually do with the hours in between, in the order they ask for it.
Plan Your Jacksonville CharterCraig Airport and the General Aviation Ramp
Where You LandJacksonville Executive at Craig sits on the east side of the city, eight miles from downtown, and it is the field a charter uses rather than the big one northwest of town. Two asphalt strips, 5/23 at 4,004 feet and 14/32 at 4,008 feet, with a tower and a general aviation ramp.
From the seat it is an ordinary landing and from the apron it is a short walk. There is no concourse and no baggage hall, so the car that was booked with the flight is standing where the aircraft parks. Ground transport covers both ends of the day.
Herlong Recreational, southwest of the centre, is the alternative when the plan sits on that side of the river. Two asphalt strips of 4,000 and 3,500 feet, about eight nautical miles out. Which field the crew files for follows where you are actually going.
Downtown Jacksonville and the Riverwalk
Eight MilesThe St. Johns River runs straight through the middle of the city and the Riverwalk runs along both banks of it, so downtown reads as a waterfront rather than as a grid. Eight miles from the ramp, so it is the default first stop on a day trip.
West of the bridges are Riverside and Avondale, the older residential quarters, with the Cummer Museum and its gardens on the water. The museum holds more than 5,000 works and the gardens run down to the river behind it. On a Saturday the Riverside Arts Market sets up under the Fuller Warren Bridge between ten and three.
The city itself covers 747 square miles of land, the largest by area in the contiguous United States, which is the fact that explains the driving. Nothing here is walkable to everything else, so the car matters more than it would in a smaller place. The Jacksonville destination page covers the city properly.
The Atlantic Beaches and the River Mouth
Sixteen MilesMore than twenty-two miles of Atlantic beach sit east of the field, and the three towns along it run into each other: Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach. From Craig it is about sixteen miles, which is twenty minutes and no ferry. North of them the St.
Johns finally meets the ocean at Mayport, about fifteen miles from downtown. The river is 310 miles long, the longest in Florida and one of the few in the country that flows north, and the mouth is the part you see from the air on the way in.
Between the beaches and the river sits the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, 46,000 acres under the National Park Service, with Fort Caroline and the Kingsley Plantation inside it. It is the reason this stretch of coast still has marsh on it rather than seawall.
Ponte Vedra Beach and TPC Sawgrass
Clubs on BoardPonte Vedra Beach is seventeen miles south of the field and it is the reason a good share of these charters get booked at all. TPC Sawgrass is there, and the island green at the seventeenth is 137 yards of par three with water on every side of it.
The course has hosted the PLAYERS Championship since 1982, so the hole is recognisable to people who have never stood on it. Booking a tee time is your side of the arrangement. Getting four people and four sets of clubs there in time for a morning start without losing a day to the interstate is ours.
Clubs travel on weight rather than on bag count, and a wheeled airframe has more of it to give than floats do. Say what is coming at the enquiry and see the baggage guidance for how the trade between passengers and weight actually works.
St. Augustine, Thirty-Seven Miles South
The Old TownSt. Augustine was founded in 1565 and is the oldest continuously inhabited settlement of European origin in the United States, which is a mouthful and also the whole point of going. Thirty-seven miles from Craig, so it is an afternoon rather than a separate trip.
Parties who want the old town as the main event often fly in to Craig, drive south and come back to the same apron in the evening. It is the sort of plan that works because the aircraft waits for you , and a Jacksonville day can be built around it.
Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach
Twenty-Six Miles NorthAmelia Island is thirteen miles of barrier island at the top of the state, about twenty-six miles north of the field. Fernandina Beach sits at its northern end and its historic district covers more than fifty blocks.
More than 400 of the buildings in it are on the National Register, so the main street looks the way it does rather than like the rest of the coast. It is the usual choice when the trip is a weekend rather than a day, and the drive up from Craig is the shortest way in.
Clubs, Cases and Cargo on the Jacksonville Run
What Wheels CarryThis is the part of the day a runway changes most. Load on a small aircraft is a weight question rather than a bag count, and a wheeled airframe has more of it to give than floats do.
Golf bags, rods, camera cases, a box of samples for a meeting downtown, a case of something for the house: all of it travels, within the payload for the aircraft on the day.
Say what is coming at the enquiry rather than at the ramp. Anything larger than luggage is a different service on the same runway and that is island logistics rather than a charter with extra bags.
Onward Up and Down the Coast by Small Plane
Same AircraftJacksonville works as one leg of a longer plan rather than only as an end point, and because the whole route stays inside Florida the aircraft can pick up and put down as the week needs it. The same airframe runs the coast south to Daytona Beach, Melbourne, Vero Beach, Stuart and West Palm Beach, or inland to Orlando.
The full list is on the Florida destinations page. Where the plan wants a dock rather than a ramp, that leg switches aircraft instead of cancelling: the same trip by seaplane onto the river. The packaged version of a single day is the Jacksonville getaway day trip.

In Detail
Small Plane Miami to Jacksonville: The Runway, the Ramp and the Drive Downtown
Everything above is the day. What follows is the detail behind it: the coast you fly up, the two strips at the far end, the eight miles into town and what charter actually changes about a flight across Florida.
Miami to Jacksonville by Small Plane: The Atlantic Coast Crossing and Jacksonville
284 nautical miles up the coast from Miami to the St Johns
The crossing is not dead time between two airports. A small plane crosses low enough to see what is under it, so the water is part of the day rather than something to sit through. 284 nautical miles up the coast from Miami to the St Johns Three of the four sit well inside the county, which is the part that decides how early the morning starts: a field twenty minutes from the house is worth more than five minutes of flight time saved in the air. Shallow water inside the barrier islands reads pale green, the Atlantic side goes navy within a few hundred yards of the sand, and the two run side by side under the wing like somebody drew them. The aircraft is chartered whole, so the headcount sets the airframe rather than the fare. Every seat is a window seat on an aircraft this size, and the same is true of scenic flights of this size, so nobody watches the crossing over someone's shoulder. Other small plane routes from Miami fly the same way.
Small Plane to Jacksonville from Miami: You Decide the Departure Time
Your hour, your names and a small plane to Jacksonville
Nobody hands you a timetable on a charter. The day is built around the hour you name. You name the hour you want to lift off, the hour you want to be standing on Jacksonville and which water in the city suits your morning. The aircraft belongs to your party for the day, so all three are your decision rather than a departure somebody else set, and a change the week before is a message to us. If the drive is shorter the other way, the same day runs out of Fort Lauderdale. Half an hour before the lift-off is the whole of the check-in. Your party walks from the car to the aircraft, the bags go on in front of you, and the list for that flight carries your names and nobody else's. Nothing about the morning waits on a stranger. Where you land decides the shape of the afternoon more than the flight time does. And the crossing is a reason in itself. The windows are deep and the aircraft crosses low, so there is room for everybody to sit and watch the water change instead of taking turns at one of them.
Small Plane Charter to Jacksonville from Miami: Nothing to File, Nothing to Carry
No customs and no check-in desk on a Jacksonville charter
A small plane from Miami to Jacksonville stays inside Florida, so there is no border to clear and no paperwork anybody has to file. The flight never leaves the country, so there is no declaration, no port of entry and no passport check at either end. Your party needs photo identification and nothing more. Everything around the flight is settled from our side before your party arrives, from the slot at both ends to the handling on the ramp. Your party walks from the car to the aircraft and the bags go on in front of you. No shared cabin and no other names on the manifest. What may travel sits in the baggage guidance. A departure moved by weather runs under the weather and delays policy, and a name added or dropped before the flight is a message to us rather than a problem for you.
Small Plane Miami Jacksonville: Milestone Days and Florida Weekends
A day trip, a long weekend or something to celebrate on Jacksonville
A private small plane from Miami to Jacksonville is booked when the day is worth marking: a birthday, a proposal, a graduation, a weekend away with the people who matter. The flight is short enough that the occasion, not the travelling, is what the day is about. That is what a small plane Miami Jacksonville charter is for. Three of the four sit well inside the county, which is the part that decides how early the morning starts: a field twenty minutes from the house is worth more than five minutes of flight time saved in the air. Some parties fly over for the day and are home the same evening. Others stay on and book the return for the day they want. Both are the same charter, and the whole group travels together on one booking. If there is something to celebrate, say so when you book: catering, a private chef, premium beverages and flowers travel with you. Everything is in place before you board in Miami.
Questions
Small Plane Charter Miami to Jacksonville: Questions Answered
Can you charter a small plane from Miami to Jacksonville?
Yes, and it is one of the more common in-state runs we fly. The aircraft is chartered whole rather than by the seat, it leaves from a general aviation field in Miami at an hour you choose and it lands on the runway at Craig Airport, eight miles east of downtown Jacksonville. Send your dates and the number of guests and what is free comes back with the price.
How long is the flight from Miami to Jacksonville?
It is 327 miles from downtown to downtown and about 291 nautical miles field to field, which puts a small plane a little over an hour and a half in the air. The exact block time depends on the aircraft, the departure field and the wind, and it is confirmed with your boarding time before you book rather than estimated on the day.
Where does the flight land in Jacksonville?
At Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport, identifiers CRG and KCRG, on the east side of the city. It has two asphalt runways of 4,004 and 4,008 feet and a control tower, and it is owned by the Jacksonville Aviation Authority. Herlong Recreational on the southwest side is the alternative when the plan sits on that side of the river.
How far is Craig Airport from downtown Jacksonville?
About eight miles, which is a short drive rather than a journey. Jacksonville Beach is roughly sixteen miles from the field, Ponte Vedra Beach seventeen, Fernandina Beach twenty-six and St. Augustine thirty-seven. The car is booked with the flight and waiting on the apron, so where you are actually going also decides which field the crew files for.
Is flying faster than driving from Miami to Jacksonville?
By a long way. The road is about 346 miles and published drive times run from just under five hours to nearly six and a half before you add stops.
The air leg is a little over an hour and a half plus a few minutes at each ramp, which is what turns Jacksonville from an overnight into a day trip that still gets you home for dinner.
Can we do Jacksonville as a day trip from Miami?
Easily, and it is the most common way this route is flown. On a charter the aircraft is held for your block, so the return is set by you rather than by a timetable.
Out after breakfast, a full afternoon in town or at the beaches, back in the evening. Tell us at the enquiry if you would rather stay a night and the aircraft is planned around that instead.
How much baggage can we take on a small plane?
It is a weight question rather than a bag count. A small aircraft trades payload against passengers and fuel, so four guests with golf bags and four with overnight cases are different aircraft. Say what is coming at the enquiry, including clubs, rods and anything with a battery in it, and the answer comes back with the quote rather than at the ramp.
Can we bring golf clubs to Ponte Vedra Beach?
Yes, and clubs are one of the main reasons this route gets chartered. A wheeled airframe has more payload to give than floats do, so several sets travel comfortably within the weight for the aircraft on the day. Ponte Vedra Beach is about seventeen miles from Craig. Booking the course is your side of it, getting the party and the clubs there is ours.
Can we fly on to Amelia Island or St. Augustine afterwards?
The same airframe can carry on, and on a run this length it usually makes more sense to fly in to Craig and drive out, since Fernandina Beach is about twenty-six miles north and St. Augustine thirty-seven miles south. Tell us the shape of the trip at the enquiry and it is quoted as one movement rather than as separate flights.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of the flight?
A paved runway tolerates a great deal that a water landing does not, which is the main practical argument for this aircraft in winter. If conditions are genuinely below minimums the crew moves or stands down the flight and the weather and delays policy says what that means for your booking. That call is the crew's, made against published limits, never a preference.
Is it cheaper than a scheduled flight?
No, and it is not trying to be. A scheduled seat is cheaper because somebody else chose the time and the aircraft is shared. Charter buys the block: your departure, your return, your party only, your load. On a day trip that usually means several more usable hours in Jacksonville, which is the comparison worth making rather than fare against fare.
What is there to do in Jacksonville once we land?
That is the city's own question rather than the flight's and the Jacksonville destination page covers it properly. In short: the Riverwalk and the St.
Johns River through the middle of town, Riverside and Avondale, the Cummer Museum and its gardens, and more than twenty-two miles of Atlantic beach a short drive east. Anything you want arranged before you land is set up with the flight.
Can I bring a pet on a small plane charter?
Yes, pets travel in the cabin with you. The one thing we ask is that you tell us at the enquiry, with the type of animal and its weight, so the seating and the load plan are right from the start.
