Expect the formalities to take minutes rather than an hour. The crew has filed everything before departure and the desk keeps daytime hours, which is one of the two edges the day is planned inside. A car or a golf cart can be standing at the apron under ground transport.

The settlement wraps around a sheltered bay on the western shore, a few minutes downhill from the apron. Cupid's Cay is the little peninsula at its centre, joined to the rest by a causeway, and it is where the Eleutheran Adventurers came ashore in 1648.

That makes this the oldest permanent settlement in the Bahamas, and the island's administrative centre ever since. The country's first American consulate stood here. The pastel government buildings, the churches on the hill and the Haynes Library, opened in 1897 and still the oldest government building in the district, are all within a short walk of each other.

Eleuthera is narrow enough here that the ocean side is a few minutes by road from the harbour side. French Leave Beach runs for more than a mile of pale pink sand along the Atlantic, and for most of the year most of it is empty.

This was the old Club Med beach and the resort that replaced it keeps the name. The pink comes from the same broken shell that colours the sand at Harbour Island, without the ferry it takes to get there.

Two coasts within a few minutes of one runway is the practical argument for this strip: the bank side is calm and shallow for swimming, the ocean side has the surf and the sand, and you are not choosing one at the booking stage.

A short drive north of the settlement is the only national park on Eleuthera, thirty acres of native bush around a wetland with boardwalks through it. The subject is bush medicine, the island tradition of treating things with what grows locally, and the preserve is run by the Bahamas National Trust as a working collection rather than a garden.

It is the sort of morning that fills the gap between an early landing and a late lunch. It is also the reason a fair number of parties on this route are not here for a beach at all. Birders, plant people and school groups fly in for the day, and a charter suits them because the aircraft waits.

On Friday evening the settlement gathers at Anchor Bay, on the harbour side, and the fish fry runs from early evening into the night. It is put on by the Governor's Harbour Development Association and it is a local institution rather than anything staged for visitors. That single fact changes the shape of a lot of bookings on this route.

A day trip has to leave before it starts, so parties who want the Friday night come out on Friday afternoon and go back on Sunday. Eleuthera runs a hundred and ten miles and Governor's Harbour sits roughly in the middle of it, which is the argument for this strip over the other two. The Glass Window Bridge, where the deep Atlantic and the pale bank are separated by a few feet of rock, is a drive north.

Rock Sound and Cape Eleuthera are a drive south. The north end has its own runway and its own page: a stay on Harbour Island or Spanish Wells is better served by North Eleuthera, because both still need a boat from there and the drive up the island is the part nobody budgets for.
