The Crossing
Small Plane Flights Miami to Bahamas
The Bahamas starts about fifty nautical miles off the Florida coast and then keeps going for another six hundred. It is a country of roughly seven hundred islands and two and a half thousand cays, of which about thirty carry a settlement. The first of them is closer to Miami than Key West is.
What makes wheels the sensible aircraft out here is that the islands people actually travel to have asphalt on them. Nassau has two runways, one of 11,017 feet and one of 8,323, and the field is open around the clock. Freeport has 11,020.
Exuma has 7,051 at Moss Town, Marsh Harbour 6,100, North Eleuthera 6,020 and South Bimini 5,430. Even Staniel Cay, halfway down the Exuma chain, has 3,031 feet of it. A small charter plane lands on any of those the same way it lands at home.
Everything between the two ends is ours: the departure point in Miami, the aircraft and the crew, both border filings and the travel documents the Bahamas wants before you leave Florida. Your party brings passports and a bag.
Which island you pick changes the day far more than the aircraft does, and that is what the rest of this page is about. Where a cay has no strip at all, the same crossing is flown by seaplane instead, which is a different aircraft and a different page, and the near islands are also flown as single routes from the city.
Plan Your Bahamas CharterHow It Works
How a Small Plane Charter Miami to Bahamas Actually Works
The Bahamas is a different country, so any day out there is two border crossings. On this aircraft both of them happen at an airport, which is what keeps it simple. Nothing about the paperwork is yours except the passports.
The short version: you clear out of Florida, you land in the Bahamas, you clear in at a desk beside the apron and the day starts.
Plan Your Bahamas CharterThe Distance
How far down the chain you go is the first decision of a Bahamas charter
The country is long. Bimini sits about fifty nautical miles off Miami, the Berry Islands around 133 at Chub Cay, Nassau just over 160 and Treasure Cay in Abaco 162.
Eleuthera is roughly two hundred and fifty miles out and George Town in the Exumas about 276. That spread is the reason a single flight time for the country would be meaningless. The block comes back with the quote, for the island you named.
The Border
You clear into the Bahamas at a port of entry, and not every island has one
The bigger fields hold customs and immigration on site, so on those islands you land where the desk is. Where the strip you want has no desk, the aircraft touches down at a port of entry first, clears and flies the last leg afterwards.
Which one that is depends on where you are heading and what lies on the line, for example Bimini or Freeport in the north or Nassau in the middle. The crew arranges it, you stay with the aircraft and it is a short stop rather than an afternoon.
Leaving Miami
Leaving Florida is the quieter of the two borders on a Bahamas flight
Outbound the filing is done for you and the aircraft leaves from a general aviation ramp rather than a terminal. You arrive at the departure point close to the boarding time, not two hours before it. Coming home is the step people forget: a return from the islands clears United States customs at a designated field and the crew plans the routing around that not around the shortest line.
The Last Mile
What is waiting at the strip is arranged before the small plane lands
Bahamian airports sit outside the settlements they serve, sometimes on another island altogether. That last stretch is a taxi, a golf cart or a ferry depending on where you are going, and it is the part worth settling at the enquiry rather than on the apron. Ground transport on both sides goes on the same quote as the flight.
Weather
A paved runway tolerates weather that a water landing in the Bahamas does not
A rough morning can rule out putting floats down on a lee shore while an asphalt strip is entirely unbothered. That is the practical argument for wheels between November and March, and it is the reason we quote both aircraft against each other rather than selling one. What flies on the day is a crew decision, taken against published minimums, never a preference.
The Block
The small plane waits, which is what lets one day hold two Bahamian islands
On a charter the airframe is yours for the block, so the return is set by you rather than by a timetable, and a second island on the same day is a line in the plan rather than a second booking.
Once you have cleared in anywhere in the country, every leg after that is domestic. Guests who want a night out there say so at the enquiry and the crew and the aircraft are planned around it.
Departure Points
Departure Points for Small Plane Flights to Bahamas from Miami
A small plane uses short fields that a jet cannot, so the departure point is chosen for your ground time. These are the four we use around Miami. Select one to see exactly where it sits.
Miami Executive
Miami Executive Airport, TMB, Kendall
Kendall-Tamiami in the south west of the county and the field both small planes sit at, the land aircraft and the amphibian. A charter that starts here starts without a positioning leg, which is what decides an early morning on a same day return. It is also the shortest drive from the south and west of the county.
Opa-locka Executive
Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, OPF
The executive airport north west of the city, with private terminal handling and the point most Bahamas day trips are dispatched from. It is also where a return from the islands clears US customs. That makes it the default on a Bahamas day unless the drive is against you.
Miami International
Miami International Airport, MIA
A pickup rather than a base, for a party already at MIA that wants the onward leg to leave from the same airport. Arranged per flight and confirmed with the operator before it is quoted. It costs ground time, because a commercial field moves on its own schedule.
Fort Lauderdale Executive
Fort Lauderdale Executive, FXE
Fort Lauderdale Executive, the Broward departure, with its own federal inspection station for the return from the islands. The usual choice when the group is north of Miami and the drive south would cost more time than the flight saves. The return clears there as readily as it does at Opa-locka.
How to Charter
Charter a Small Plane from Miami to Bahamas
Chartering an aircraft is not booking a seat. There are four steps, and only the first one is yours.
Plan Your Bahamas Charter- 01
Contact Us
Write to us on WhatsApp or by email. Send your dates, how many guests, where you are coming from and which island you have in mind. Tell us the hour you would like to leave. If you are not sure which one, say what you want out of the day and we will name two or three that fit.
- 02
Get Aircraft and Prices Back
We check what is free on your date and send the small planes that fit the strip at the far end. Seats, baggage and flight time for each one. Every aircraft costs a little differently, so we can find the best fit for you.
- 03
Confirm and Pay
You pick the aircraft, and we set the departure point and the landing site. Then everything around the flight. Catering on board, a car or a golf cart waiting when you land, ground transport to your hotel or on to the dock. Flowers if the day is a special one. You approve it, you pay, and your boarding time, departure point and everything included come back to you.
- 04
Just Arrive 30 Minutes Early
You will have no terminal and no queue. Just make sure you are there 30 minutes before. Then you take off, land on the island you chose, and enjoy the day.
The Chain
Where a Miami to Bahamas Small Plane Puts You Down
The aircraft puts you on asphalt, and which asphalt is the only real decision on a charter to the Bahamas. The country runs from fifty nautical miles off Miami to nearly three hundred, and the strips below are the ones a small plane uses.
What follows is the chain from the top down: the runway at each stop, the border desk if there is one, and what the last mile looks like once the wheels are down.
Plan Your Bahamas CharterBimini and the Berry Islands
Fifty Miles OutThis is where the country starts. South Bimini carries 5,430 feet of asphalt about fifty nautical miles off the Florida coast, which makes it the shortest international crossing flown out of Miami, and the border desk sits in the one terminal building beside the apron.
Chub Cay, at the southern tip of the Berry Islands, is the other short one: 5,000 feet of strip about 133 nautical miles out and its own desk again. Between them they cover almost every request that begins with the words day trip.
Both islands need a short hop at the end, a taxi and a ferry across to Alice Town on Bimini and a few minutes of road on Chub Cay. Neither is far enough out to eat into the day.
Grand Bahama and Freeport
Eleven Thousand FeetGrand Bahama International at Freeport is the closest full-size field in the country, 11,020 feet of asphalt on an island that sits roughly fifty-five miles east of the Florida shore. A runway that long is more than any small plane will ever use, and that is the point: nothing about the arrival is marginal, the field handles traffic all year and customs and immigration are on site.
It is the northern anchor of the chain and the one most first crossings from Miami are quoted against. The island itself is long, so the drive from the apron depends on which end you are staying at. Grand Bahama and Freeport each have their own page, and a car at the strip is arranged with the flight.
Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay
Two StripsGreat Abaco has two runways thirty miles apart. Marsh Harbour runs 6,100 feet of asphalt across the flat ground at the edge of town and Treasure Cay has 7,001 further north, and both hold a border desk.
Which one the aircraft uses is a question of where you sleep rather than of aircraft performance. Marsh Harbour is the working centre of the island and the ferry dock for Elbow Cay and Hope Town. Treasure Cay puts you at the north end and at the boat across to Green Turtle Cay.
From Miami this is roughly a hundred and sixty to two hundred miles, so it works as a long day and rather better as a weekend. The Abacos, Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay are each written up on their own.
Nassau and Paradise Island
Around the ClockLynden Pindling International has two asphalt runways, 14/32 at 11,017 feet and a second of 8,323, and it is open around the clock. Nassau sits just over 160 nautical miles from the Miami waterfront. The hours are the part that matters on a charter.
Most Bahamian fields keep daytime opening, so a dinner on the island and a night flight home is a question of which airport you are leaving from. Nassau is the one that never closes, which is also why it turns up so often in the middle of a longer routing.
The resort strip is on Paradise Island over the bridge, the old harbour front and the beaches are on New Providence itself, and the island page covers what is there. The flight is on the Nassau route page.
Eleuthera and Harbour Island
Three RunwaysEleuthera is a hundred miles of island a mile or two wide, and it has three strips: North Eleuthera with 6,020 feet at the top, Governor's Harbour with 8,025 in the middle and Rock Sound with 7,215 in the south. The charter uses whichever one is nearest to where you are actually going, which on a long thin island saves more time than any amount of speed in the air.
From Miami the crossing is around two hundred and fifty miles. North Eleuthera is also the way in to the two small islands off the top. Harbour Island and its pink sand are a five minute boat from the dock, Spanish Wells is a similar hop the other way, and Eleuthera itself has its own page.
Exuma and Staniel Cay
Seven Thousand FeetExuma International sits at Moss Town with 7,051 feet of asphalt, a few minutes from George Town, about 276 nautical miles from Miami. That is the far end of a comfortable day and the natural base for the southern cays.
Halfway up the chain, Staniel Cay has 3,031 feet of its own, which is short by any other standard and generous for this aircraft. Landing there instead of George Town saves an hour of boat, and the swimming pigs at Big Major Cay are a few minutes from the dock.
The cays in between are the reason people come back: clear water on both sides, sandbars that dry out at low tide and anchorages with nothing on them. The flights are on the Exuma and Staniel Cay pages, and the cays without a strip are flown by seaplane.
Andros and the Out Islands
The Long LegsAndros is the largest island in the country and the least built on, with three separate airfields down its length and the third longest barrier reef in the world off its east coast. It is the bonefishing island and the flight is short, around a hundred and thirty miles.
Further out the legs get longer. Cat Island has 5,049 feet at New Bight, Long Island has two strips of just under 4,000 feet at Stella Maris and Deadman's Cay, and San Salvador has 7,999 out on its own in the Atlantic.
Several of these hold their own border desk, for example on Long Island and at Cockburn Town, and where a strip does not the clearance stop depends on the routing and is arranged by the crew. These are the islands where a charter stops being a convenience and starts being the only sensible way to arrive. Andros, Cat Island, Long Island and San Salvador each have a page of their own.
Clubs, Tanks and Freight on a Small Plane
What Wheels CarryThis is the part of the day a runway changes most. Load on a small aircraft is a weight question rather than a bag count, and a wheeled airframe has more of it to give than floats do.
Golf clubs, dive tanks, rods, a cooler for the boat, a case of something for the house: all of it travels, within the payload for the aircraft on the day. Say what is coming at the enquiry rather than at the ramp and see the baggage guidance for how the trade between passengers and weight actually works.
Anything larger than luggage is a different service on the same runways, and that is island logistics rather than a charter with extra bags. Provisions, boat parts and building material move the same way, to the same strips.

In Detail
Small Plane Miami to Bahamas: The Runways, the Border and the Chain
Everything above is the day. What follows is the detail behind it: the asphalt at the far end, the border that sits beside it, the water in between and what a whole chain of islands changes about planning a charter.
Miami to Bahamas by Small Plane: Flying Low Over the Reef and the Flats
Room enough and a window each on a Bahamas small plane
The crossing is not dead time between two airports. A small plane crosses low enough to see what is under it, so the water is part of the day rather than something to sit through. The Bahamas starts about fifty nautical miles off the Florida coast and then keeps going for another six hundred. For a hundred miles at a stretch the water is shallow enough to read from the air: pale sand, dark grass beds, the sharp line where a reef drops into blue, sandbars that dry out at low tide and cays with a single boat behind them. Where the strip you want is not on it, the aircraft clears somewhere that is and then flies the last leg, for example through Bimini, Freeport or Nassau depending on the line of the day. Every seat is a window seat on an aircraft this size, and the same is true of scenic flights of this size, so nobody watches the crossing over someone's shoulder. Other small plane routes from Miami fly the same way.
Small Plane to Bahamas from Miami: You Decide the Departure Time
Your hour, your names and a small plane to Bahamas
Nobody hands you a timetable on a charter. The day is built around the hour you name. You name the hour you want to lift off, the hour you want to be standing on Bahamas and which water in the city suits your morning. The aircraft belongs to your party for the day, so all three are your decision rather than a departure somebody else set, and a change the week before is a message to us. Half an hour before the lift-off is the whole of the check-in. Your party walks from the car to the aircraft, the bags go on in front of you, and the list for that flight carries your names and nobody else's. Nothing about the morning waits on a stranger. Everything between the two ends is ours: the departure point in Miami, the aircraft and the crew, both border filings and the travel documents the Bahamas wants before you leave Florida. And the crossing is a reason in itself. The windows are deep and the aircraft crosses low, so there is room for everybody to sit and watch the water change instead of taking turns at one of them.
Small Plane Charter to Bahamas from Miami: The Crew Files Both Borders, You Carry a Passport
Passports are all your party carries on a Bahamas crossing
A small plane from Miami to Bahamas crosses an international border twice in a day. It is the part that goes wrong when nobody files it in advance. Entry into the Bahamas asks for a declaration filed from Florida, clearance at a port of entry on arrival and a US return filed before you leave, which is what sets where you may land coming home. On a Crown Air charter the crew files all three. Passports for everyone, children included, per the travel documents guidance. What may travel sits in the baggage guidance. That same filing sets where you land coming home: a return from the islands clears at None, so a day that began on the water finishes on a ramp and a departure moved by weather runs under the weather and delays policy. If the party changes before the flight, the crew refiles. A name added, a name dropped: that is a message to us rather than a problem for you.
Small Plane Miami Bahamas: Milestone Days and Bahamas Weekends
A day trip, a long weekend or something to celebrate on Bahamas
A private small plane from Miami to Bahamas is booked when the day is worth marking: a birthday, a proposal, a graduation, a weekend away with the people who matter. The flight is short enough that the occasion, not the travelling, is what the day is about. That is what a small plane Miami Bahamas charter is for. Harbour Island is reached from North Eleuthera and a boat, Green Turtle Cay from Treasure Cay and a ferry, and the smallest cays have no strip at all and belong to the water-landing aircraft instead. Some parties fly over for the day and are home the same evening. Others stay on and book the return for the day they want. Both are the same charter, and the whole group travels together on one booking. If there is something to celebrate, say so when you book: catering, a private chef, premium beverages and flowers travel with you. Everything is in place before you board in Miami.
Questions
Small Plane Charter Miami to Bahamas: Questions Answered
Can a small plane land in the Bahamas?
On most of the islands people travel to, yes. Nassau has two asphalt runways, 11,017 feet and 8,323, and the field is open around the clock. Grand Bahama International has 11,020, Exuma International 7,051, Treasure Cay 7,001, Marsh Harbour 6,100, North Eleuthera 6,020 and South Bimini 5,430. Even Staniel Cay has 3,031 feet. The cays with no strip at all are flown by seaplane instead.
How far is the Bahamas from Miami?
The first island is closer than most people expect. Bimini sits about fifty nautical miles off the Florida coast, which is nearer than Key West by road. After that the country stretches south and east: Chub Cay about 133 nautical miles, Nassau just over 160, Treasure Cay 162, Eleuthera around 250 and George Town in the Exumas about 276. The island you pick sets the crossing.
How long is the Florida to Bahamas flight time?
It depends entirely on which island, which is why an average would be useless. The near ones are a short hop and the far ones are well over an hour in a small plane. Block time also counts the taxi at both ends and, if your strip has no border desk, the clearance stop on the way. We confirm the boarding time and the block with the quote, for the island you named.
Which Bahamian island should we fly to from Miami?
Tell us what you want from the day and we will name two or three. A short crossing and a beach points at Bimini or the Berry Islands. Pink sand points at Harbour Island by way of North Eleuthera. Restaurants, a casino and a late return point at Nassau. Swimming pigs and clear cays point at the Exumas. Fishing points at Andros or Abaco. The runway follows the choice.
What travel documents do I need to enter the Bahamas?
A passport for every passenger, children included. The Bahamas is a different country and a private aircraft does not change that. We take the passport details once at the enquiry and file the manifest for both sides before departure. The travel documents page lists what each passenger hands over and by when, including the cases that need more notice, such as a non-United States passport or a residence card.
How do I book a private charter to the Bahamas?
Send the dates, the number of guests, where you are leaving from and which island you have in mind. We come back with the aircraft that are free, the baggage each one takes and the block time. You pick one, we set the departure point and the landing site and add anything that has to be arranged with the flight, then you approve it and everything comes back.
Can you take a day trip to the Bahamas from Miami?
Easily, and it is the most common way this route is flown. On a charter the aircraft is held for your block, so the return is set by you rather than by a timetable.
Out in the morning, back in the evening, with both borders handled either side. The near islands make the calmest day trip. Tell us at the enquiry if you would rather stay a night and the aircraft is planned around that.
Is it better to fly to the Bahamas or take the ferry?
The ferry from Florida costs most of a day in each direction and it lands you in one place. A small plane crosses in a fraction of that and can put you on an island the boat does not serve at all. The comparison worth making is not fare against fare but hours on the island against hours in transit, which is where the aircraft wins on anything shorter than a week.
How do you get to the Bahamas swimming pigs?
The pigs are at Big Major Cay in the Exumas, and the practical way in is Staniel Cay, which has its own asphalt strip of 3,031 feet a few minutes from the beach by boat. From Miami that is a crossing of roughly 250 miles, so it makes a long day trip or a comfortable overnight. The boat at the far end is arranged with the flight rather than on arrival.
How much baggage can we take on a small plane?
It is a weight question rather than a bag count. A small aircraft trades payload against passengers and fuel, so four guests with dive tanks and four with overnight bags are different aircraft. Say what is coming at the enquiry, including clubs, rods and anything with a battery in it, and the answer comes back with the quote rather than at the ramp. Anything larger is island logistics.
Is a small plane or a seaplane better for the Bahamas?
It depends on the island and the season. A small plane needs a runway and gives you weather tolerance, more payload and an onward leg without changing aircraft. A seaplane needs no runway at all and puts you at a dock or a beach on cays that have no strip. We quote both against each other rather than selling one, because which is right changes with the date and the party.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of the flight?
A paved runway tolerates a great deal that a water landing does not, which is the main practical argument for this aircraft in winter. If conditions are genuinely below minimums the crew moves or stands down the flight and the weather and delays policy says what that means for your booking. That call is the crew's, made against published limits, never a preference.
Can I bring a pet on a small plane charter?
Yes, pets travel in the cabin with you. The one thing we ask is that you tell us at the enquiry, with the type of animal and its weight, so the seating and the load plan are right from the start.
