Manatees and bottlenose dolphins both live in it, and both are seen from the bank as often as from a boat. Neither is tied to a particular month, so both hold up whatever date the party has already fixed around something else.

This is a look-and-leave animal rather than a swim-with-it one. The manatee is protected, so the sensible shape of the afternoon is a slow boat or a paddle rather than anything quick. Worth saying when you send the date, because it changes what we arrange rather than when we fly.

Melbourne holds down the southern end of the Space Coast, seventy two miles of shoreline running north from here to Titusville with the launch pads at the far end. On a clear day a launch is visible up the coast, which is a thing this town has and almost nowhere else does.

It is the most significant loggerhead nesting ground in the world and the most significant green turtle nesting ground in North America. Roughly a quarter of all loggerhead nests in the United States and about a third of all green turtle nests are laid here, somewhere between fifteen and thirty thousand of them in a year.

What makes it work is what is missing: long runs of quiet sand with little or no artificial light on them. From a few hundred feet that is obvious, because the built-up coast simply stops. It is also why an afternoon down here is a walk rather than a resort strip.

North of downtown, the Eau Gallie Arts District sits on the water itself: a historic riverfront quarter of galleries, restaurants, shops and a square with a band shell, working through a calendar of events rather than one season.

The Historic Rossetter House Museum and Gardens is there, and so is a public library with a fishing pier attached to it, which tells you most of what you need to know about the pace of the place. It is a walking quarter rather than a driving one.

For parties who want a table rather than a boat, this is usually where the day ends up. A fly and dine day is the packaged version of exactly that, and catering on board covers the leg rather than the lunch.

Downtown sits a little further south, where Crane Creek runs out into the river, and it is compact enough to cross on foot. The creek and the riverbank are the two edges of it, so the water is never more than a couple of streets away.
