What the Cay Is
The first thing anyone notices is that this is a working place rather than a resort strip. The harbour down the middle of the cay carries the largest commercial fishing fleet in the Bahamas: steel hulled boats of sixty to over a hundred feet, and most of the settlement tied to them one way or another.
The boats, the dock and most of what keeps them running are held co-operatively, which is why a cay this size has a proper harbour at all. For a visitor it means the waterfront is busy at both ends of the day instead of empty between check-ins, and that what is on the plate at lunch came in that morning.

The Devil's Backbone
Snorkel and Dive
The reef that runs across the top of Eleuthera lies about a mile and a half northeast of the cay. It is shallow, broken and it has taken dozens of ships over the centuries, which is why local boats still put a pilot aboard to cross it. For a snorkeller that history is the attraction.
The same shallow water that wrecked the ships holds the coral heads, the fish and enough of the wrecks to swim over, and it is minutes from the harbour rather than an offshore run. Divers work the deeper edges of it on the ocean side. It is also the thing you have just flown over, which is not true of most snorkelling stops.
Say how many are swimming when you send the date, and say separately whether anyone is diving rather than snorkelling: a dive boat and a snorkel boat are not always the same boat. Both leave from the harbour, so an afternoon in the water still leaves an evening ashore.
Harbour Island and the Pink Sand
Minutes East
The best known thing at this end of Eleuthera is not on Spanish Wells at all. Harbour Island lies a few miles east, on the far side of North Eleuthera, and its three miles of pink sand are the reason most people know this corner. The two are a pair rather than alternatives.
Spanish Wells is the quieter one with the harbour, Harbour Island the busier one with the hotels and the golf carts, and plenty of parties take both inside one visit. If the pink sand is the day rather than the detour, there is a helicopter route to Harbour Island that goes straight to it.
The North Beach and the Sand Flats
A Short Walk
The north side of the cay is a long white beach that is usually close to empty, because no cruise dock and no resort strip feeds it. From the harbour it is a walk rather than a drive.
Off the western end the water goes shallow and pale over sand, which is the kind of ground a beach picnic is set up on and where the rays come in shin deep. Add water toys if the party wants the afternoon on the water rather than on the sand.

This is a fishing island before it is anything else, so the local knowledge is deep and it is not marketing. The flats behind the cay hold bonefish, and the drop into blue water off the north shore is close enough that a half day offshore is a real half day rather than a transit.

The Settlement, the Museum and the Fish Fry
On Foot
On land it is a walk rather than a drive. The settlement runs along the harbour in painted clapboard, the small museum tells the story of the Eleutheran Adventurers who landed here in the 1600s, and the fish fry places are a few minutes from either.
The name is older than the settlement: Spanish ships took on water here in the 1500s, which is where the wells in it come from. It is the sort of detail that makes a walk worth taking rather than a reason to come.

South Down Eleuthera
The Long Island
Eleuthera runs about a hundred and ten miles south from this corner, which makes it one of the longest thin islands in the Bahamas. From Spanish Wells and Harbour Island at the top it goes down past Governor's Harbour to Rock Sound and Cape Eleuthera at the bottom.
That length is why the main island has its own crossing on Miami to Eleuthera. A day built around the south end is a different day from a day on the cay, and a different aircraft schedule with it.
