Private Jet from Miami to Marco Island

Most parties come for the Gulf side first. The island's west shore is one long curve of sand, and Tigertail at its north end is the stretch people ask for by name. A shallow lagoon sits between the car park and the beach, and beyond it the sand runs out to the bar known locally as Sand Dollar Island. The Ten Thousand Islands soften the swell to the south, so shells land whole instead of broken, and low tide is the time to walk. Keewaydin is the narrow barrier island north of Marco at the mouth of Gordon Pass. No bridge reaches it and no road runs along it, so everyone on that sand came by water. The Calusa lived here from about 500 CE and left shell mounds behind. The modern island is much younger: the Mackle brothers bought the land in the 1960s, and the bridge onto it opened in 1969. The Marco Island Historical Museum holds the Key Marco Cat, a carved wooden Calusa figure found here in 1896, and it is worth twenty minutes of an afternoon. Goodland still feels like the fishing settlement it began as, and a waterside lunch there is the slower alternative to a beach afternoon. Cape Romano is the next point south, and for four decades it carried the oddest sight on this coast: six dome houses on stilts, built between 1980 and 1982 about 300 feet offshore. Hurricane Irma brought down two of them in 2017, and Hurricane Ian took the last four in September 2022. What remains is pilings above the water rather than domes, and the state has owned the site since 2018. The cape itself has no road to it, so the boat that brings you also waits for you, and the ride there runs along the southern edge of the Ten Thousand Islands. It is a boat trip from the southern passes, best paired with the Ten Thousand Islands in the same afternoon rather than planned around a photograph that no longer exists.

North and east of the island the water is a research reserve. Rookery Bay covers about 110,000 acres from Gordon Pass at Naples down into the western Everglades, one of the few mangrove estuaries in North America still largely intact. It is the reason the shelling, the fish and the birds on this stretch are what they are. The reserve runs a visitor centre on the mainland side for a party that wants the story behind the water, and a boat pickup covers the rest of it.
